Here I only have a device called dummy. I think it is ConsoleKit
(http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/ConsoleKit)
up to jiggery-pokery. I get this at the tail of /var/log/kdm.log

##
arguments to ck_connector_get_cookie() were incorrect, assertion "connector !=
NULL" failed in file ck-connector.c line 583.

I had moved the build to a new location the old one had kde-4.4.2 which I
abandoned. the build went OK but on login in I obtained a nasty flash
that /usr/lib/dbus-1.0/dbus-daemon-helper no success or some such. Here is
the narrative:-

a) If I fixed the permissions on the dbus-daemon-helper file that the
warning disappeared; KDM reports no errors BUT I get a dummy for my sound
device AND usb-memory sticks show up but opens-up as the home directory!
I get sound only on the command line alsamixer, aplay works (I do not have
/etc/asound.conf)

b) if I do not fix the permissions and keep the KDM-login warning flashing
across the screen, all sound devices are enabled pulse, jack etc and I
get sound AND usb-sticks can be opened. (which by the way show up only if
inserted at boot-time -but that is another story)

c) if I do not fix the permissions of the dbus-daemon-helper file and I
start consolekit manually before I start KDM the KDM-login warning
disappears and usb-sticks can be opened but I get a dummy sound device
(generally)

which begs the question what might be the motiviaion for ConsoleKit?

I have stopped d-bus and hal, scrubbed out the stain of ConsoleKit, scrubbed
Hal out recompiled both of them and restarted with the correct perms on
the dbus-daemon-helper fileand I was back to a) above.

The only one I have not redone is pulse-audio

So advice/workrounds on being rid of
---
arguments to ck_connector_get_cookie() were incorrect, assertion "connector !=
NULL" failed in file ck-connector.c line 583.
---
from you or others on list would be appreciated

There have been reports of KDE-4.x.y no being compatible with PulseAudio
dispute that fact that it is supposed to be able to use it as the sound
server.

IAC, if PulseAudio is being used, it must be running. Open System
Monitor and look for it.

Then open system settings and go to the section for sound configuration
and look at the window showing "Output Device Preference". Select
Music. If you want to try PulseAudio, it should be at the top. OSS
should always be at the bottom. It it isn't working, kill the
PulseAudio daemon and more ALSA to the top. To use the same settings
for everything, use the: "Apply Device List To ..." button.

I was (but no longer) playing kde-4.
Exact specifics forgotten, but
check somewhere in control settings
something like mixer or phonon stuff.
If phonon installed bad, there is never any sound.
(there was kde vs. qt phonon monkey business.)

I have played wav files from /usr/share/sounds/alsa both at command prompt
before startkde and in konsole.
but I still get a dummy for the sound device in kde.

in one instance when I did not get a dummy I got KDE start/and/exit sounds
but no CD-sound.

The thing's a joke.

I think its hal and that consolekit mulaki. I hope its ditched by kde-4.6
with kdesolid.

yes alsamixer is fine and aplay runs fine
sounds (from/usr/share/sounds/alsa) play on the command line.

I even get the kde mixer gui and can toggle levels and press mute buttons
but I cant get a whisper out. "You have a dummy sound card" sayeth KDE!

The one instance when I did not have a dummy sound card, the startup/exit
sounds played but the CDplayer stayed stubbornly silent.

I have no experience with PulseAudio - it's on my list of things to
look at somewhen, but so far I'm nowhere near it. But since I can't
do much while I'm trying to build xorg and periodically fixing typos
in the new version numbers, I've googled PulseAudio.

As far as I can see, you have to start it, and then the way in
which you get applications to use it varies - e.g. alsa apps need
you to edit asound.conf (even though for non-pulse most people don't
need asound.conf).

The only thing I can see in the articles I've read is that esd is
replaced by Pulse, everything else seems to need extra work to use
PulseAudio. So very likely, once you get something working, you'll
have to make changes to the other sound-playing apps.

Google also found various comments about "too quiet", but googling
in lynx is not my favourite activity.

If you have it running, it might be worth your time to look at the
arch wiki http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PulseAudio - obviously
ignore the comments on pacman and repositories, but it seemsto have
useful info, e.g. for asound.conf.

If you've got alsa, you can test:
alsamixer
speaker-test

Do you have 2 sound cards? When you run alsamixer, what card and chip
does it say? Have you compiled support for those into the kernel? Have
you unmuted all the channels (press m) in alsamixer? Does speaker-test
give any sound? I don't use kde, oss or pulse audio so I can't help with
those.
