Re: [Blind-Computing] KESI Virtual Printer In Theory

2007-06-16 Thread Bill Gallik
Well, Solid Converter PDF didn't work on Lois' document neither. I tried it
two ways; one as the printer option and again as the PDF file processing
application. In neither case could it get any meaningful text from the
file -- well, none at all real. I guess the KESI Virtual Printer was at
least better in this regard, at least it could read disjoint words from the
"print out."

[Blind-Computing] KESI Virtual Printer In Theory

2007-06-16 Thread Bill Gallik
OK, I posted a private message to David concerning the KESI Virtual Printer
feature of Kurzweil and he urged me to post to the list. I have posted
several messages on this matter to the list, but I'm not sure if they were
Sufficiently clear.

First, I believe the KESI Virtual Printer debuted with Kurzweil 1000 Version
6.0, but it may have been Version 6.02. No matter, there are probably folks
out there without this feature because it wasn't available in the version
they have installed.

What is the KESI Virtual Printer feature?

This feature allows a user to "print" a document by specifying the "KESI
Virtual Printer" as the printer to run the job. In reality, this selection
will pass the formatted print job through the Optical Character Recognition
(OCR) software and launch Kurzweil 1000 as if it were actually scanning a
paper document. The step that's avoided here is actually creating a
hard-copy or paper copy of the document to then scan via normal procedures.
Instead a shortcut is deployed where the formatted print output is processed
immediately via the OCR and the Kurzweil 1000 reader.

How does the computer get this feature?

The KESI Virtual Printer is established as one of the printer options when
Kurzweil 1000 is installed. After installing Kurzweil 1000 you can go to
the Settings/Printers from the Main Menu and you'll be able to ascertain
that "KESI Virtual Printer" is indeed one of the available printers on the
system.

Is the KESI Virtual Printer guaranteed to always work?

Hmmm, apparently not! Just today I encountered several problems with the
document Lois had posted about on this list. The first problem is that it
seems the quality of the photocopy is so terrible (or they've used some
terribly fancy print font on the original document) that each of the 11 page
document reported "Poorly Recognized" while processing the document through
the OCR. That was ad enough, but then when I tried to save the
"printed/scanned" document Kurzweil crashed. The first problem could have
been overcome with some artful editing, but I couldn't save the output into
a file of any kind for subsequent editing. Very frustrating for sure!

Are there other "virtual printer" applications other than KESI Virtual
Printer?

Oh yes! From the thread on this list today it is obvious that Freedom
Scientific's Open Book has a similar feature. And there are other virtual
printer applications available as well. In fact, I just learned today that
"Solid Converter PDF" is also installed as a virtual printer -- imagine my
surprise when I went to Settings/Printers and discovered this.

Lois, you mind sending me that file again -- I'll try to pass it through
Solid Converter PDF and see if that works better.

So, in theory the KESI Virtual Printer should function as I had suggested
throughout the thread on Lois' PDF file. But it didn't and here I sit with
egg on my face and the text "F O O L" printed boldly on my forehead! Think
I'll take a picture, load it into a PDF and send it on to the list! Humph!

Yes, you can leave Jaws on while doing a defrag. It doesn't create a log
file, but you do have the option to save the results once the the defrag is
finished.

If you don't have kurzweil or openbook, you can make use of the scan tools
provided by Microsoft. On the Microsoft Tools submenu (I am talking about
the Start menu and not in a Microsoft application), you will find 2
scanning options, document Imaging and document scanning. The document
imaging options will scan your document into a MS-Word doc as an image which
is just fine if you are sending something to a person who does not use a
screen reader. If you want to create an accessible scanned document, you
will need to use the Document scanning option. It does a pretty good job,
but not as good as Kurzweil or openbook.

Another option for scanning software that is not all that expensive is text

Cathie Jacobse asks:
Does this apply to scanned documents as well? For example, I scan a letter
into my computer, then email it as an attachment to you. How easy is it to
be read?

Well Cathie,

The answer to your question depends on how you (or anybody) scanned the
document. Personally, I have Kurzweil 1000 and would use that to scan a
document to save and attach as a text file -- this is quite accessible. I
also have an HP multi-function printer/scanner/copier with dedicated
software that will allow me to "take a picture" of a document or attempt to
scan as text. I have no idea how accessible a document scanned as text via
this HP software will be since I prefer to use Kurzweil for this. But I
suppose it's possible that the HP scanning software would produce reasonably
accessible text files.

Of course, I'm answering this as somebody who is totally blind and depends
on screen reading software to get anything meaningful from computer data.
If you're scanning documents and sending them to persons that at least have
reasonably functional sight there's probably no issue. And, if you were to
send a "photocopy" image to somebody who has Kurzweil he/she could always
run the attachment through the KESI Virtual Printer themselves to get a text
rendering of the letter. I don't know if Open Book has a similar feature; a
capability to have the Open Book Optical Character Recognition software
serve as a "printer" to convert images into text.

I believe this works similarly with OpenBook. If you set up the Freedom
Printer, you can bring the inaccessible PDF image into Openbook. It has
been some time since I've done this as my current computer at work will not
allow the Freedom Printer to set up.

Does that make sense?

Hi Lenny,

Well, I guess you've answered my unknown. I presume that the HP scanning
software might yield similar results in that scanning a document as a text
document will produce a file that I could then access with JAWS. It makes
perfect sense to print the PDF and then scan it. But since I have Kurzweil
I can eliminate the steps of printing the PDF and then loading the paper
into the scanner bed. By virtue of the KESI Virtual Printer provided in
Kurzweil 1000 I can pass the PDF directly into Kurzweil by specifying to
print that PDF with the KESI Virtual Printer (rather than my HP PSC). It
saves paper, time and effort.

Re: [Blind-Computing] reviewing documents recovery task panes

2007-06-16 Thread Annette Carr
You might want to go into your MS-Word options and see where your back up
files are being stored. My guess is however, that this is not going to be
helpful. I'm thinking that your auto back up had not yet had a chance to
save the most recent work that you had done before the program crashed.
While you are in your MS-Word settings, consider reducing the time lapse
between back ups. I keep mine at 3 minutes.

Hi there Steve & Shannon,

Thanks. I was able to locate the recovery pane by pressing F6 and there were
a number of files listed there, however, not the one i was attempting to
recover. There was an "edit box" So I typed in the file name I was
attempting to recover and it pulled up a number of files of which again none
belong to me. I even used the jaws curser and read the page from top to
bottom and still no luck. I guess this undertaking requires sight, but I
thank every one for their help.

Good afternoon,

Does anyone know of any excel (preferably) or MS Word files on the net (free
or for purchase) that cover calorie, fat, carbs, fiber, sodium, glycemia
rating etc? A format such as this would be accessible with JAWS. If not
does anyone know of any JAWS accessible nutritional resources?

thanks

Lois,

I've been trying to run the document through the KESI Virtual Printer rather
than printing it on paper, but it's not going very well at all. First, the
contents are very poorly recognized. And second and even worse, when I try
to save the "printout" Kurzweil crashes. I've tried several times with same
results. I guess Lenny's idea of printing the document and then scanning it
is the only way to get the document in an accessible format unless you can
go to the source and inquire what they might be able to do for you.

Sorry this didn't work out as I'd suggested -- it's worked for me before but
this time it's not working well at all.

Could you explain how this is done with the KESI Virtual Printer ? We have

Hello bill,

Glad that makes sense to you. I sometime have difficulty explaining
how to get around a problem.

As For the Kurzweil, that is a super way of doing what I have to do,
but unfortunately the Kurzweil 1000 I think, is a little out of my price
range.

When Kurzweil was first introduced years ago, I had the privilege of
using one at my job. Talk about being pricey! My employer was
generous and the best part was that synthesizer was DecTalk.

Can you use the Kurzweil 1000 with any scanner or does it have to be
a particular one?

Thanks for any help,

Lennie

Re: [Blind-Computing] reviewing documents recovery task panes

2007-06-16 Thread lawrence taylor
Hi there Steve & Shannon,

Thanks. I was able to locate the recovery pane by pressing F6 and there were
a number of files listed there, however, not the one i was attempting to
recover. There was an "edit box" So I typed in the file name I was
attempting to recover and it pulled up a number of files of which again none
belong to me. I even used the jaws curser and read the page from top to
bottom and still no luck. I guess this undertaking requires sight, but I
thank every one for their help.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Readability of Scanned Documents - Was: pdf help needed

2007-06-16 Thread Lennie Rinaldi
Hello bill,

Glad that makes sense to you. I sometime have difficulty explaining
how to get around a problem.

As For the Kurzweil, that is a super way of doing what I have to do,
but unfortunately the Kurzweil 1000 I think, is a little out of my price range.

Lennie

Cloner Pro put out by Premier Software. It can be found at

readingmade easy.com

You must use your own screen reader with Text Cloner Pro if I remember
correctly.

Annette

If you set up the Freedom

perfect sense to print the PDF and then scan it.

Hello David,

I just double checked my idea and it works fine. This is of course
you have a scanner and a scanner software like OmniPage 15 and the
image PDF file is not a picture, but text.

I printed the image with Acrobat and then scanned the printed page
and I was then able to read the results with Jaws.

So, if there is a will, there is a way (smile) I just wanted everyone
to know that it is possible to do something like this without sighted help.

Thanks,

Lennie

Re: [Blind-Computing] *****SPAM***** Readability of Scanned Documents - Was: pdf helpneeded

2007-06-16 Thread Annette Carr

Cloner Pro put out by Premier Software. It can be found at

readingmade easy.com

You must use your own screen reader with Text Cloner Pro if I remember
correctly.

Annette

Re: [Blind-Computing] Readability of Scanned Documents - Was: pdf help needed

2007-06-16 Thread Lennie Rinaldi
Hi,

I use a Canon printer copier and scanner. I can scan a letter or
other document as a text file and it is completely accessible.

As for a photo copy of a PDF file, I would print this document and if
it is only one or two page long, I would then scan the printed
results to read it.

Does that make sense?

Thanks,

Lennie

What Marilyn has suggested about needing to use the Kurzweil Virtual Printer
to read a particular PDF file leads right into what I'm going to suggest
here. It's possible that the PDF file you are having trouble with is a
photocopy document loaded into a PDF. This means that there may be nothing
at all wrong with your Adobe Reader and you won't be able to save the
document as a text document because it is essentially one big picture of a
document that was photocopied and loaded into PDF.

Sorry. This message was sent before I read all the other replies.

FWIW, the url for 'updating' your version of the reader software is:

What happens when you try open it?

Not sure, but I think acrobat is up to version 8 already, and that may be
the problem.

[Blind-Computing] Readability of Scanned Documents - Was: pdf help needed

2007-06-16 Thread Bill Gallik
