[Blind-Computing] changing synthesizers on the fly

2007-08-15 Thread Kerby Hill
Hi, is there a way to change from elequence to real speaks on the fly? I like
using realspeaks in say all only but when in windows live messenger, I want
realspeaks as the synthesizer. I know about going into config manager and
going into synthesizer options and changing default synthesizer but number 1.
you can't change default synthesizer unless default.jcf is opened and also I
just wanted a quicker way especially since it's only temporary because like I
said, I mostly use real speaks in say all only. I'd appreciate any help.
Thanks

Re: [Blind-Computing] changing synthesizers on the fly

2007-08-15 Thread Jacob Kruger
In the Jaws configuration manager, after making sure that the default file
is loaded, under the set options menu, there's an option for say all...
where you can set an alternative option which is then activated by using alt
+ ins + down.

I actually found an audio tutorial relating to this somewhere, but I can't
remember where.

FWIW, I think this was only active in one of the Jaws 8.0.xxx versions.

Hi Sarah,

Could you be a bit more specific as to what you mean by "Reverse Order"?

Are you saying that I should go down to the bottom of the list, and start
adding the files to the burn list, one at a time, from the bottom up?

Re: [Blind-Computing] changing synthesizers on the fly

2007-08-15 Thread torgersonenator
Hi Cris,
I love the control + insert + s. idea. I have a sappy synthesizer that
has a British accent and I love to listen to it but there are times that for
clarities sake I need to use eloquence. So, this gives me an easy way to
switch. Wow, I can have my cake and eat it too.

God bless,
Mark

[Blind-Computing] Question on locating files

2007-08-15 Thread Lois
My friend sent me this message and I can't answer it. He is using XP if that
will help. He doesn't want to search the hole computer, but just one folder.

Lois

If you have a folder that has a variety of file extensions

.doc
.txt
.ltr
.mp3

and this folder is large with say 100 files in it. Is there a way to
isolate say only the extension of mp3. This was doable in DOS using

dir *.mp3

but is there some way to do this in Windows?

It is also possible to navigate to the view menu and arrow down to the
arrange icons by
sub menu. Hit enter on by type to group all of your files together by
extension.

[Blind-Computing] Victor Reader help

2007-08-15 Thread Chris Feist
Hi. I recently signed up with Bookshare.org and have downloaded and
installed Victor Reader. I thought that Victor Reader would come with its
own clear sounding voice, but rather it's using that terrible Microsoft
voice that speaks when I load narrator. I can't even understand it, it's so
awful.

My two questions are, 1. Is there a way I can change the voice it reads
with, and 2. where can I get better voices and must they be purchased, or
are their free ones out there somewhere?

NOTE: I'm using JAWS 7.0, Windows XP, and Victor Reader 2.0.

thank you,

Chris Feist - The one and only!

[Blind-Computing] more advanced text editor

2007-08-15 Thread Lois
My friend has another question. I hope you all can help. I use word myself.

Is there a text editor slightly more advanced than Notepad or Wordpad that
allows you to:

1. Work on multiple files at the same time.
2. Underline certain parts of a message
3. Change margins on the fly

I know Word does this, but I am looking for a simpler version.

In Windows Media player, open the options dialogue from within the tools
menu. Control tab to the file types page, then either select the file types
you want with the space bar or activate the select all button. Finally, tab

Re: [Blind-Computing] Windows media player and music match

2007-08-15 Thread torgersonenator
Hi
The trouble probably is that the wrong program has decided to be your
default player on the files you like to play. So, one needs to reassign the
windows media player as your default player for these types of files. I had
a similar probablem with a text editor. I am trying to remember how to
reassign a file type though.

[Blind-Computing] Error Loading IE 6-XP Home

2007-08-15 Thread Margaret Thomas
Hi All,

I got the following error message every time I loaded IE 6 today:

Error
A file that is required to run Search Companion cannot be found. You
may need to run setup.

and there was an okay button to press.

I did a Google search and found a Microsoft article that seems to
give a resolution to the problem, but I wanted to make sure I didn't
get myself into a mess and have a couple of questions.

SYMPTOMS
After you connect to a Web site, you may receive the following error
message:
A file that is required to run search companion cannot be found. You
may need to run setup.
After you receive this error message, you cannot use Search Companion
to search for files or folders, or to search the Internet. The options
to search for
files or folders, or to search the Internet, are unavailable.

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if a file required to run Search Companion is
missing or damaged. Note that this problem affects only the
English-language version
of Windows XP.

NOTE: Search Companion files may be damaged if you have Search
Companion open when you connect to certain Internet Service Providers.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Install Windows XP SP1

Method 2: Download and Install the Hotfix
The following file is available for download from the Microsoft
Download Center:

Download
Download the Q319949 package now

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319949

If I go ahead and download and try to install the Hotfix, will XP
automatically put it in the right place for me since I have no idea of
where it belongs? I have SP 2, so I don't think I want to install SP
1.

Also, where is the Search Companion? I downloaded and installed
the Microsoft updates yesterday and wonder if one of them might have
corrupted this Search Companion.

The computer is XP Home with IE 6 and I'm running JAWS 7.0.

Any help in straightening this out would be greatly appreciated.

Margaret

Re: [Blind-Computing] Error Loading IE 6-XP Home

2007-08-15 Thread Ricque
Hi Margaret,
Go ahead and download the file from Microsoft.
Run the file, it will install where it belongs.
No, you do not want the service pack 1 package.
The search companion is basically the Windows search utility.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Error Loading IE 6-XP Home

2007-08-15 Thread Margaret Thomas
Hi Ricque,

I seem to be in a loop trying to download the file. It seems MS
has to certify that my copy of XP and/or Office is genuine before it
will let me download it. It then said something about the genuine
advantage version having expired and I haven't been able to find out
how to get an unexpired one yet. I may have messed up since at least
the first I was asked if I wanted to run "Publisher" I said no since I
didn't understand that it was needed to run the validation process.
The expired thing may mean that I've exceeded my allotted attempts.
I'm hoping I can try again later.

I could swear that I've downloaded the genuine advantage thing
every time it has come up with updates. The machine is 2 years old
and the copy XP
is legal as far as I know. My tech built the machine and I don't know
if it was already on there or if he installed it. Anyway, I need a
break.
