Hi Ginger,
One correction to your message,
the 10mb scan tool download is free,
but, the repair utility is not.

2008-09-23 Thread Patricia Dunbar
Well thanks for the info and glad your problems are fixed..
However, I did a system's restore and I have my Word back!
It's working as it has always and no way am I tampering with something like
what you suggest here just to have it disappear again.

Hi, I know what your problem is now. You need to scan your registry and
 fix
the problems. If you go finallyfast.com you can get a free application
there called pc speed scan pro and it's free and it will fix all your
 problems. It fixed all mine.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Transferring data from one laptop to another.

2008-09-23 Thread Jacob Kruger
Nope.

They can use the 'common' resource of the external drive.

It's how I backup important information every now and then (only really
emails), and how I sometimes transfer them over to a machine that will be
offline when I'm busy out of the office for a week or two on site etc.

The only thing that won't really be copied/transferred over is the actual
passwords of things like email accounts, so the first time when you do
something like a send/receive, it will in fact prompt you for those.

Stay well

Thanks for the reply. Does this mean that I don't have to connect the
computers together by a cable then?

Start, programs, accessories, system tools, files and settings transfer
 wizard.

Choose the option that it's the old computer, but then on the transfer
method dialogue select the other option, which will allow you to supply a
path on your external drive where it'll place a folder called USMT2.UNC.

Then, when you run the wizard on your new computer, you can tell it it's
 the
new one, and tell it where to look for that folder, and there you go.

There are some other options like either files or settings, or both, and
whether or not you want to try modify the listing it generates, but,
initially, I'd just go for the both files and settings, since this will
 sort
of include things like my documents, email messages, desktop layout,
 graphical options settings, etc. etc.

 Hi.

I'm replacing my laptop and I know that there's a backup utility in
 system
tools which allows you to transfer everything from your old computer to
 a
new one. Does this work well with Jaws and what type of cable do I need
 to
connect the two laptops together in order to transfer the data?

I've got everything backed up onto an external harddrive, but I'd like
 to
try and transfer everything over onto my new machine if it's ok to do
 that.

I'd be grateful on any comments on this, as I've not done this before.

I have a Sony Vaio laptop at the moment and replacing it with another
 Sony
 machine with higher spec.

[Blind-Computing] Avast Anti-virus question

2008-09-23 Thread Dan Murphy
Hi all.
I have downloaded the free for home use version of Avast, but I was unable
to complete the registration form to get a key because they employ the use
of some kind of CAPTIA thing at the bottom of the form. this means, if I
install it the program will only run for 60 days, as I understand it.
How do I get around this niggling little problem, or was I downloading from
the wrong part of that somewhat confusing web site.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I thinmuch of that may be available in DVD. You could buy a few to try
and use something DVDAudio Extractor to get just the audio portion.

[Blind-Computing] Skype echoing

2008-09-23 Thread Lennie Rinaldi
Hi Everyone,

I am using Skype version 3.5.0.214 with scripts. I having an unusual
problem when talking with a friend with a microphone.

My friend comes in clear and he can hear me loud and clear. However,
every time I say anything, my words are repeated back to me over my

Does anyone know how to eliminate the echo?

on why this could be? Not sure if I should reformat or not. I did a system
restore recently, but then reversed the restore, and I wonder if that has
anything to do with it.

Anyway, I thought I'd ask. This is on my Dell XP desk top computer.
Thanks.

Re: [Blind-Computing] SP3 maybe stopping computers from connecting toWeb

2008-09-23 Thread Chris Feist
I wanted to get back to all on this and describe the resolution to the
problem I had with my computer weeks before just in case anyone else may
have experienced this issue.

To recap, I had downloaded service pack 3 and because of that install I
could no longer connect to the Internet. Researching showed this to be true
in cases of a failed SP3 install. In other words, apparently that day I
shut down the computer before the installation was complete.

Since I was connecting a new wireless router anyway, that was a suggested
fix to get connected again to the Internet, bypassing the SP3 problem. Then
I downloaded and reinstalled SP3 properly. All is fine now. *whew* If I
hadn't had the new wireless router, it may have been a bigger mess to clean
up, who knows. Anyway, that's that.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] SP3 maybe stopping computers from connecting
toWeb

Hi. I downloaded and installed a bunch of Windows updates onto my XP pro
desk topp last week right before I went out of town. I return to find that
when I booted up my computer I could not log on to the Internet. We tried
everything we could think of, including system restore. No luck.

But it turned out that after talking to a few other folks, my dad discovered
that they were having the same problem as me. They said that after they
installed service pack 3 they could not log on to the Internet either.
Fortunately, I have a lap top computer I can plug my DSL into while my desk
top won't connect.

Has anyone else experienced this after installing service pack 3? The funny
thing is I thought I hadn't downloaded service pack 3 yet. Does anyone know
where I can go to look on my computer to see which Windows updates I've
recently installed? That would help me narrow down the culprit.

Thanks,

Chris Feist - The one and only!

[Blind-Computing] Easy program to burn data to CD's and DVD's?

2008-09-23 Thread Chris Feist
I'm really wanting to back up all my data to CD's and DVD's. I'm wanting to
do this without having to copy the files into the disc drive directory as I
have to do when I burn audio files with Windows Media Player. It would take
forever to do it that way since I have so much data to back up.

Should I shell out for Nero to achieve this or is there a free program that
will easily burn data to discs out there? I'm not even sure Nero would fit
my needs. Anyway, thanks.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Skype echoing

 Hi Everyone,

I am using Skype version 3.5.0.214 with scripts. I having an unusual
problem when talking with a friend with a microphone.

My friend comes in clear and he can hear me loud and clear. However,
every time I say anything, my words are repeated back to me over my
speakers, thus making it somewhat difficult to carry on a decent
 conversation.

Does anyone know how to eliminate the echo?

Your help will greatly be appreciated.

NVDA works really well under Vista, it's free, and you can get it from
www.nvda-project.org. You need the 0.6P2 release for best results. Hope this

[Blind-Computing] turning off script debugging

2008-09-23 Thread Mark
Hi
Occasionally, I get an E-Mail that when I arrow past it in my E-Mail list
a message appears saying that there was a script error and did I want to keep
running scripts on this page or debug... How do I tell internet explorer that I
just want it to handle the issue on its own and not ask me again? This has
puzzled me for sometime now. I am using the latest IE, Vista home addition,
windows mail and Jaws 9.
 Thank you.

God bless,

NVDA works really well under Vista, it's free, and you can get it from
www.nvda-project.org. You need the 0.6P2 release for best results. Hope
 this
 helps.

Re: [Blind-Computing] software to convert PowerPoint files to plane text

2008-09-23 Thread Jeffrey Shockley, Windows Desktop Edition
Hi,
You don't need any software to do it, PowerPoint can do it.
When ya have the presentation open, just go to File/Save As, and choose
Text Files from the filetype list. RTF and HTML will also work.

HI,
All Dell machines (Dimension, XPS, Inspiron, Latitude, and OptiPlex,)
all work well, as long as a 32-bit OS is installed, which it is by
default when the computer is ordered. Those I mensioned were the ones
I've had experience with. In fact, using a Dell Dimension, right now
with no problems, since January of 05 when it was bought and set up.

Re: [Blind-Computing] software to convert PowerPoint files to plane text

2008-09-23 Thread Annette Carr
You do not need any special software to convert a PowerPoint Slide
Presentation to a MS-Word file. There are 2 ways to accomplish this.

Option 1:
1. Open your presentation in PowerPoint.
2. From the File menu, select Save As.
3. From this dialog box select where you want to save your new file, enter
a name for your file, and select the file type as a *.rtf.
4. Open MS-Word.
5. Open your newly created *.rtf file.

Option 2:
1. Open your PowerPoint presentation.
2. Use Shift+F6 to move to the Payne on the left side of your screen where
you can view your presentation in such formats as thumbnails and outline.
Depending on how you have your view set, you might not find this Payne, and
for now you can forget about using this option.
3. If outline is not showing, you will need to Route the JAWS cursor to the
PC cursor.
4. Move the JAWS cursor around, probably up, until you find the word
Outline.
5. Left click on the word Outline. Now you are in the Outline view.
6. Change back to the PC cursor.
7. Move to the top of the outline.
8. Select All.
9. Control+C to copy.
10. Open MS-Word.
11. Control+V to paste the Outline into MS-Word.

Things to keep in mind: Graphics, text boxes and some other types of
objects will cause havoc when converting a PowerPoint presentation in either
of the above methods. If you cannot read the info when it is in a
PowerPoint slide in the edit/design mode, you probably will not be able to
read it when you convert the file.

hTH,
Annette

I have recently upgraded to AVG 8 and JAWS is saying the word attachment with
every email that I
get. I found the instructions on how to remedy this problem, but the settings
are totally different
in this newer version of AVG. Could someone please tell me how to fix this
