Hi
I doubt it is on the blind website but I use Readiris Pro 11. Once one
gets the scanner configured scanning is rather easy compared to other off the
shelf programs I have used.

Well I asked this question before losing my computer and if the answer came
through in that time sorry for asking again.
I would like to know if there is a program that is jaws friendly for
scanning material. Using jaws 10. That is available on the blind computing
web site?
Side note: not receiving from jaws yet

2009-05-04 Thread Nimer Jaber
It could possibly be a matter of drivers. Just for kicks, have you tried
updating your OS? It is possible that wireless drivers could have been
added or modified in an update. And, have you tried using different
wireless settings in the GUi?

Thanks

Have you tried the virtual machine at the Vinux site? It is
called,
"Vinux_Virtual_Edition_1.4.exe" and is configured for Vinux. Read
the

accompanying text file for details. Go to the downloads page at:
http://vinux.org.uk/

Don Marang

PS I hear a new exciting distribution of Ubuntu, the Linux variant
on
which Vinux is based has just come out! It is Ubuntu 2.0. I have
heard
great things from several PC experts. I wonder if a Vinux 2.0 will
be

available soon?

Has anyone tested MS's own VMWare product?

It's called Microsoft Virtual PC FWIW.

It's free, and the configuration wizard etc. seem pretty usable,
but

will
have to either try find a valid VPC image that's already had an OS
installed, or maybe get a sighted person to try help me, for
example,
install something like Vinux, or an older MS Os so I can see if I
can,

for
example, try out their screenreader utilisation, but I think it
should

work
since in my first test run, I could tell it the new VPC I was
configuring
would think it had a sound blaster card etc.

Anyway, here's the details/download page:
http://www.microsoft.com:80/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=28C97D22-6EB8-4A09-A7F7-F6C7A1F000B5&displaylang=en

FWIW, once I start up my virtual pc machine, I do need to use the
jaws
cursor to get to some of the activity menus, but not really a
problem.

Ok, while typing this message, I realised I was being stoopid, so
I

started
the VPC, and told it to mount the Vinux live CD image and then
told it

to
restart/reboot, and it did seem to be virtually booting up from
the CD

image
since I heard the sound prompt to hit enter to make it start
running in

live
mode, so will have to test it a bit more - LOL!

For those who don't know, Vinux is a modified/tweaked version of
Ubuntu
linux that automatically makes things like the Orca screenreader
start,
and has also, apparently, had it's whole user interface tweaked to
suit

us better.

Stay well

Re: [Blind-Computing] Microsoft Virtual PC software

2009-05-04 Thread Jacob Kruger
's called Microsoft Virtual PC FWIW.

Anyway, here's the details/download page:

http://www.microsoft.com:80/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=28C97D22-6EB8-4A
09-A7F7-F6C7A1F000B5&displaylang=en

FWIW, once I start up my virtual pc machine, I do need to use the
jaws
cursor to get to some of the activity menus, but not really a
problem.

Ok, while typing this message, I realised I was being stoopid, so I
started
the VPC, and told it to mount the Vinux live CD image and then told
it
to
restart/reboot, and it did seem to be virtually booting up from the
CD
image
since I heard the sound prompt to hit enter to make it start
running

in
live
mode, so will have to test it a bit more - LOL!

For those who don't know, Vinux is a modified/tweaked version of
Ubuntu
linux that automatically makes things like the Orca screenreader
start,
and has also, apparently, had it's whole user interface tweaked to
suit
us better.

Stay well

Re: [Blind-Computing] Seemingly non-existant entry

2009-05-04 Thread Jacob Kruger
Not 100% sure, but my first thing is always to go for classic since
otherwise, windows will, for example, auto hide what it calls unused items,
etc.

In any case some of those things, like printers etc. will be under the
settings section - HTH.

Hi Jacob,

I had never played around in this area and so I followed your steps to see
what would happen. After opening customize, I tabbed over to Advanced
Start

Menu Options. In here i checked Expand My Pictures, Expand Printers, &
Expand Network Connections. I then okayed my way out and restarted the
computer. After the computer was re-booted I didn't see any changes in
the

start menu, on the desktop, or in the settings option in the start menu.
Did I do something wrong or am I not looking in the right places to see
the

changes made by checking the 3 boxes that I mentioned above? All advice
will be greatly appreciated. Thanks much, take care.

Also, depending on your OS etc., one of the first things I do after
starting

using a machine for the first time is hit the windows key, hit escape so
that the start button has focus, right click on it and hit enter on
properties, and in that dialogue I make sure it's set to classic start
menu,

and then tab over to the customise button and hit space on it, and in the
new dialogue that then pops up you find a list of items to display,
including things like control panel etc. etc. and after turning them on,
tab

to ok, hit space, tab to other ok, and hit space, and then, you'd find
things like the control panel under settings.

This is all on win XP, but anyway - one day I'll move up to windows 7 or
something.

Yes, it sounds so.
Try going to Start >run (hit the letter R for a quick key) > type
control > hit enter.
This should bring up the control panel.
then try looking for user acounts.

be

available soon?

FWIW, once I start up my virtual pc machine, I do need to use the
jaws
cursor to get to some of the activity menus, but not really a
problem.

Ok, while typing this message, I realised I was being stoopid, so I
started
the VPC, and told it to mount the Vinux live CD image and then told
it

to
restart/reboot, and it did seem to be virtually booting up from the
CD

image
since I heard the sound prompt to hit enter to make it start
running in

live
mode, so will have to test it a bit more - LOL!

For those who don't know, Vinux is a modified/tweaked version of
Ubuntu
linux that automatically makes things like the Orca screenreader
start,
and has also, apparently, had it's whole user interface tweaked to
suit

us better.

Stay well

Hello, Richard!!

Thanks for your helpful advice.

Clearly, obviously, I have a lot to learn about the personal computer. But:
That's the fun of it. Right?

Question: What does the acronym "HTH" signify?

Ten to one, it doesn't mean "Hit the Hay!"

Once again, thanks for your help.

Sincerely,
Cliff Smales
