Re: [Blind-Computing] scanner help
This is why, I think, we should not worry about things like whether pictures scan properly. Our major concern should be whether our scanner works properly with our optical character recognition programs. - Original Message - From: "Mystical Charm" To: Sent: Monday, July 27, 2009 8:04 PM Subject: [Blind-Computing] scanner help I have to give a little background info in case it is needed to understand my situation. About a month or so ago I had Windows 2000 and I used a Epson Perfection 1670 scanner, which I still have and use. Also, I use my scanner mainly with Kurzweil 1000 version 9. I upgraded to Windows XP Pro because my hard drive got corrupted somehow. My friend, who works on my computer, did a reinstall and that is when I upgraded to Win XP Pro. My scanner worked fine and I could still use Kurzweil. Though, when my friend did a reinstall he did not put the Epson Smart Panel in or anything else that was on the original disk. The only thing of Epson I had was in the Start menu which was, Epson Scan. The other day my boyfriend wanted me to scan a picture for him and that is when we noticed that the picture wasn't coming up like it use to. I called my friend and that is when he told me it was probably because he forgot to install the Epson Smart Panel. So, thinking everything was fine today, I was going to scan some things in Kurzweil and the scanner would not move. The light was on near the buttons and the light on the scanner bar was on but the bar would not move. This could have been do to my boyfriend hitting some of the buttons on the front of the scanner. Again, I'll mention that after the install of XP the scanner worked fine and I could scan materials in Kurzweil. Well, I found my CD of Epson and installed everything. The scanner bar moves now which I suppose is good. It was a successful install as I was told on the screen. When I go to the Start menu now it has extra stuff of Epson but the Epson scan option does not open any more like it did. My biggest concern is thinking that the bar moved now I could use Kurzweil. I open Kurzweil and tried to scan several things that I have scanned in the past (like a test to see if it would work) and Kurzweil does not recognize that there are any pages. I'm not sure of what to do. I tried calling my friend a couple of times but he hasn't gotten back to me. Is there anything I could do or try? I did look in Kurzweil to make sure the scanner was listed and it was. Re: [Blind-Computing] Compiling a play list
Hi Maria, I am sure that you have a certain rationale for deciding to get a CD changer. Can I ask why you would prefer a large changer rather than 'digitize' the entire collection? Personally, I would buy a cheap 1 TB external USB drive and just rip all of the CDs to disk with Windows Media Player. Large 1 TB disks are now less than $100. I prefer to rip to a high quality MP3 format. That way it can be played on any device. Yes, it will take some time to rip 400 CDs. But, the process takes little user intervention. Most of the time you don't even have to pay attention to determine the title or contents of the CD. I would do this task in the background as I did other things that do not hog resources. Perhaps while reading mail. It becomes like an assembly line. Just swap in a new CD. There are endless advantages to converting CDs to a MP3 library. Possibly the biggest is having a digital backup. Actually, with a valuable collection, I would make multiple copies. It would certainly solve your current problem, because all of the information would be instantly available in the Media Library. Once in the Library songs can be searched for and categorized in many ways. The songs would all be instantly available. Does the CD changer come with any special software to work with Windows Media Player, Winamp or iTunes? I really do not see how this device would be useful without such software that automatically does what you are requesting. Ideally, it's software should work with the player software to make the player think all of the songs are available all of the time and know when to switch CDs. This device will also require some time to 'mount' the desired CD, start playing the track and will take longer to retrieve the song data while playing. Does this changer 'mount' more than one CD at a time? How long would it take to switch from a song on one CD to a song on a different CD? This will occur all of the time in a typical playlist. Changers are also susceptible to hardware failures since they have more moving parts. Re: [Blind-Computing] Is this website accessible?
Hi Mark, This site seems very difficult,. I had no problems subscribing to their podcasts. They support a wide variety of readers. They also seem to provide a variety of live and archived streams, including MP3 and uncompressed. I was not able to get any of these streams to start. Apparently there are icons inside the Flash object for the different formats. Unfortunately, JAWS does not seem to be able to position the JAWS cursor within the Flash object. I could not find a "play" button. The closest thing I could find was a "LISTEN NOW" Flash button, which did nothing. Using system Access did no better. If you want to look through the archives, Internet Explorer 7 does not work well with the combo boxes to select program, host or time. Firefox 3.5.1 handled these controls normally. I still had the same problems playing the archive I selected that I had with the live stream. I would contact them to let them know that you are unable to select a format and start the stream. They seem to know about streaming, but I don't think their Flash objects have accessibility enabled. They need to modify their Flash objects. At least accessibility code needs to be enabled / added to these critical controls to start the stream. This is what happens. You'll be on line or something. And the audio just totally stops. Your computer crashes. When you try to restart it re-starts and it works well for a sighted person. But there is n0o Audio. Yesterday my oldest daughter spent about 3 hours on the phone with them. I am the one that figured out an easier resolution. They said run a System Recovery. Those don't work correctly with it. You need the ones from the disk. When you are re-installing them from the disks, a pop up comes up telling you about an incompatibility and if you continue this will re-occur in the future. I still continued anyway. It made my computer work again. So I called the manufacturer and told them about it. They said they were aware of it and there was nothing you or they can do about it. This is a cautionary tale. You should never buy a netbook or laptop from a fly-by-night outfit that didn't even exist two years ago. Always stick with an established brand with a proven track record even if it's more expensive. You're much more likely to get a quality product that works. Believe me, I very much appreciate any and all of the help and advice and suggestions that you can give me when it comes too resolving any possible future problems that I might encounter with this particular model of netbook from Asus. This is what happens when there is poor quality control on the part of the company. More often then not, companies are far too willing too push there products on the market, without making sure that the quality of the merchandise that there selling is of good quality and of a hirer standard. Maybe if businesses cared less about making high profits, and more about quality rather then quantity, they'd have mor of a satisfied customer. - Original Message - From: "Rogelio Terrazas" To: Sent: Saturday, August 01, 2009 4:36 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Important Asus Netbook Users This is what happens. [Blind-Computing] computer acting differently
My computer has had a change of behavior, so to speak. Usually, I can go to my "in box" and it will stay there as long as I wish it to, giving me immediate access to my messages. Recently, however, If I leave it in active for even a few minutes, I'll get the following message when I try to check my e-mails: "no window is active. press windows key+m." Once I do this, I'm back in business, as usual. How do I restore my former situation of my "in box" remaining opened, as long as I wish. Re: [Blind-Computing] Important Asus Netbook Users
Yes mine is just the blue one. The only difference was the battery life. Mine was 4 hours, that why it cost $299.99. I just coffed up the extra $100 and got the deluxe mini from Toshiba. It has Blue Tooth and upgradable to 2 GB. On line they got the same on for $349.99 without the Blue Tooth. I got mine from the store. I am paying a little less. On line they wanted to charge an additional $23 for shipping where as my sister is picking it up from the store so really I am paying an additional $77. Minus the $15 I got back last week for the first problem I had. tThat brings it to $62. By the way, it is not called deluxe. It is just loaded. Never will I shop cheap again. -Original Message- From: blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Albert Cutolo Sent: Saturday, August 01, 2009 5:06 PM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Important Asus Netbook Users Hi Rogelio. Re: [Blind-Computing] Partition drive with recovery disks?
The last time I did a similar restore was on a Sony laptop. I had previously modified the partition sizes and converted from FAT32 to HPFS. During the restore, it automatically formatted and partitioned the drive back to the original factory configuration. There might have been a less destructive option, but in most cases this might not solve the problem.
