Re: [Blind-Computing] scanner help
Reading Edge was a dedicated Text-To-Speech reading system that was essentially a PC configured with a scanning component, an OCR component and a TTS component. By "dedicated" I mean there was nothing you could do with this system other than scan documentation. The advantage to such a system is that the processor need only handle the bare essentials of resource management and process handling. You could get away with a smaller, less efficient CPU and supposedly have satisfactory throughput for reading documents. Apparently though, it wasn't quite "satisfactory" enough because it has apparently disappeared from the market. ---*---*---*---*---*---*--- Holland's Person, Bill E-Mail: billgal...@centurytel.net - Anonymous (from my source of goofy stuff) - Eggs and Bacon for Breakfast - An entire day commitment for a chicken. - A Lifetime Commitment for a Pig For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

I think there was a scanner product called either Leading Edge or Reading Edge. It is no longer made. Re: [Blind-Computing] Radio stations that use annoying Flash
I might get my daughter to look at the site late tonight. I may be able to magnify it enough to figure it out. I think you must select a stream format before activating the "LISTEN NOW" button. These sites really bug me! The developers obviously spent a lot of effort to support so many podcast and streaming formats. There goal is to reach as many people as possible! Unfortunately, they totally neglected working with assistive technology, and thus a large community! I did email them with nice, constructive suggestions of where the accessibility issues are and lead them in the right direction. mostly, the developers need to know there is an issue with accessibility of their site. They also seem to provide a variety of live and archived streams, including MP3 and uncompressed. I was not able to get any of these streams to start. Apparently there are icons inside the Flash object for the different formats. Unfortunately, JAWS does not seem to be able to position the JAWS cursor within the Flash object. I could not find a "play" button. The closest thing I could find was a "LISTEN NOW" Flash button, which did nothing. Using system Access did no better. If you want to look through the archives, Internet Explorer 7 does not work well with the combo boxes to select program, host or time. Firefox 3.5.1 handled these controls normally. I still had the same problems playing the archive I selected that I had with the live stream. I would contact them to let them know that you are unable to select a format and start the stream. They seem to know about streaming, but I don't think their Flash objects have accessibility enabled. They need to modify their Flash objects. At least accessibility code needs to be enabled / added to these critical controls to start the stream. Re: [Blind-Computing] scanner help
Let's remember to not confuse the special scanning applications developed by Kurzweil and Freedom Scientific (OpenBook) with the utilities that accompany most scanner peripherals these days. Kurzweil and OpenBook are designed to work specifically with blind users and are integrated with the on-board scanning peripheral(s) available on any given PC configuration. On the other hand, the software utilities that usually come with a newly purchased scanner are general user packages that may or may not work well with screen reading software. What I've discovered with my new Dell AIO 810 is that the included scanning utility software will allow much higher resolution (up to 2400 DPI if memory serves); the image is then translated into text via the on-board Optical Scanning Recognition (OCR) software I happen to have (which is ABBY on my system). I find it much more convenient to use my Kurzweil software because it is designed to work effectively with screen reading software. I suspect that if I run into a particularly tough document to scan accurately I could (and have) resort to the accompanying utility that would allow me to up the scanning resolution dramatically. Ultimately though, it all falls to the OCR to convert the scanned image into a text based document. The utility that comes with my new Dell all-in-one scanner is somewhat clumsy for me to use with JAWS and I found the utility that came with my old HP PSC 1315 to be likewise clumsy to use as my main document scanning utility. But these components -- the scanning software utilities, the image scanner and the OCR all work together to yield what we need.

About a month or so ago I had Windows 2000 and I used a Epson Perfection 1670 scanner, which I still have and use. Also, I use my scanner mainly with Kurzweil 1000 version 9. I upgraded to Windows XP Pro because my hard drive got corrupted somehow. My friend, who works on my computer, did a reinstall and that is when I upgraded to Win XP Pro. My scanner worked fine and I could still use Kurzweil. Though, when my friend did a reinstall he did not put the Epson Smart Panel in or anything else that was on the original disk. The only thing of Epson I had was in the Start menu which was, Epson Scan. The other day my boyfriend wanted me to scan a picture for him and that is when we noticed that the picture wasn't coming up like it use to. I called my friend and that is when he told me it was probably because he forgot to install the Epson Smart Panel. So, thinking everything was fine today, I was going to scan some things in Kurzweil and the scanner would not move. The light was on near the buttons and the light on the scanner bar was on but the bar would not move. This could have been do to my boyfriend hitting some of the buttons on the front of the scanner. Again, I'll mention that after the install of XP the scanner worked fine and I could scan materials in Kurzweil. Well, I found my CD of Epson and installed everything. The scanner bar moves now which I suppose is good. It was a successful install as I was told on the screen. When I go to the Start menu now it has extra stuff of Epson but the Epson scan option does not open any more like it did. My biggest concern is thinking that the bar moved now I could use Kurzweil. I open Kurzweil and tried to scan several things that I have scanned in the past (like a test to see if it would work) and Kurzweil does not recognize that there are any pages. I'm not sure of what to do. I tried calling my friend a couple of times but he hasn't gotten back to me. Is there anything I could do or try? I did look in Kurzweil to make sure the scanner was listed and it was. [Blind-Computing] Radio stations that use annoying Flash
Yeah Don. I just visited that site and I like you use System Access and I couldn't get the listen now button. I keep banging my head up against a wall when I encounter streams that use Flash. I can't ever CTRL the volume. Certain streams has the slider, but using the vitural mouse, I can only turn a particular stream to 48 percent. Hi Mark, This site seems very difficult,. I had no problems subscribing to their podcasts. They support a wide variety of readers. Mark, Don't know if you got help, but this stream should play in WMP or WINAMP or if you have Adobe Flash player installed it should play on the site. Hi to the original sender. Do you still have the CD to your scanner? The Epson Smart Pannel software is really not needed, but if you need to scan pics, you should install it. Good luck. [Blind-Computing] Urgent help with document
Hello all, Could someone please write to me off list so I can attach a document? It's a resit assignment documentation and I can't read certain parts of it as JAWS keeps saying blank blank blank. I tried changing the font with no go. I even tried converting the table to text thinking it was a layout issue and still no go. I even tried saving it as HTML but the converted web page didn't even show the part at all! But I know it's there as there's lots of blank blank blanks. Anyway, all help would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to start on this today or tomorrow if possible. Re: [Blind-Computing] asus computer company
Gerald, you can buy an extended warranty for just about anything these days. Heck, Best Buy will even try to sell you an extended warranty on a $40 boombox if you let them. As a rule I never take extended warranties on anything. In the course of your lifetime if you add up all of the money you saved on not buying them you can practically laugh at the folks that did buy them, while sipping your drink on some sandy strip of beach somewhere. It is interesting that you mention the good old Dell workstation as I am typing this now on an ancient Dell workstation that I bought back in 2001. It was pretty high end back then and cost close to 4K. It is too late to do that math in my head but that is around $450 a year. Nowadays, I can spend that much per year and get a new desktop every year. Leaving the $20k plus servers I build aside, these consumer computers have gone the way of the toaster, electric toothbrush and TV. Just another piece of disposable consumer electronics. Does Asus offer a three year warranty on its products like Dell? I don't think so. To me, a PC is a long-term commitment, not a throwaway commodity. I'm in no financial position to run out and buy a new PC every six months, which is about the life span of some of this garbage. So for now, I'll stick with my 30 pound Dell workstation, which is built like a tank. Hmm, log onto yahoogroups.com and click on the manage my groups link and make sure your email address isn't listed as "bouncing". I don't remember, did you say you are getting mail from the groups but can't send a message or are you not getting group mail and not able to send group messages as well? Also this is simplistic but have you checked your junk mail folder to make sure mail either from yourself isn't being sent there by mistake?
