Re: [Blind-Computing] Accessible Google Books?

2009-12-13 Thread David Griffith
I think generally no, Google books is not accessible.
Allegedly some of the Google books pages have an OCR version link which is
only detectable by screen readers and is not visible to sighted users.
If this exists it is one of the first links you will come across on the page
and will be called something like OCR. . In practice though the number of
Google books which have this accessible link appear to be tiny and
constrained to a few mainstream books. I have never known an academic
reference I have needed have this accessible link.

In theory you should be able to print the pages to a virtual printer like
Kurzweil or Microsoft document Image scanning. In practice I found that
Kurzweil 11 produces gibberish whilst even the normally reliable Microsoft
option produced only a small amount of readable text . I have had to resort
to a support worker typing out the contents of a page in the past.

So to sum up I do not rely at all on Google books beyond getting reference
information which I then order the physical book from the library to scan.

If anybody has had greater success than me in accessing google books then I
would be delighted to learn how they did it.

Regards

David Griffith

Hi
Recently, it was pointed out to me that Google Books has a text book I
need to read part of. Unfortunately all I am finding in the book are
graphics. No screen reader friendly text. Am I missing something? Is there a
way to access this book?

The one limitation of Image for Windows is that to perform a recovery with
speech takes a little effort. But it is the only product I have found where
this is possible! Image for Windows has great technology that allows an
accurate image of the disk to be made while Windows and JAWS are still
running. To get speech during the recovery process, you must create a
bootable live CD or DVD with some flavor of Linux. I downloaded the Virtual
Edition of Vinux from http://vinux.org.uk . Vinux is a distribution of
Linux configured with screen readers and magnification installed and
configured. The Virtual Edition runs within Windows using the free VMware
Player to emulate a virtual computer. The virtual disk is just a large file
on your Windows system. The Virtual Edition is a great way to play around
with Vinux with no risk of harming your Windows setup. To get the total
benefit of Vinux, however, you would need to install it on a hard disk.
Other safe ways to play with Vinux with no risk are to boot from a live CD
(easiest, but no changes can be retained) and a bootable USB pen drive
(currently technical difficulties during the creation process).

I installed the Image for Linux software that comes with Image for Windows
into the Vinux Virtual Edition. After installation, you need to run a setup
program. which among other things asks for your Image for Linux product key.
At this point, I created a bootable live CD from the Virtual Edition.
Unfortunately, I can not simply upload an ISO file that others can use by
burning to a CD because of the Image for Linux product key.

Hopefully soon I can create a set of directions or a Linux script to make
this process easier! I made quite a few mistakes and encountered slight
technical issues along the way, it would be nice if others did not need to
go through this.

 Hi Samson,

Norton Ghost 12 will make an image of your harddrive but, if you ever have
to reimage your harddrive you will need sighted assistance. That is why I
removed it from my computer a couple of days ago. I have some computer
issues that are forcing me to reformat my drive and I am not able to do it
with this program. I am going to run a program called Image for Windows.
 I
can't explain how it works to you because I haven't learned how to
operate/navigate the program yet but, there are others on this list that
 use
it and have no problems. Hopefully they will chime in with theiropinions.
I also am running XP3 home Jaws 10 11 latest. Take care.

Hello,

I use JAWS 10 and Word 2007 and have problems with the table of contents
in a document.
I have an existing Word 2003(.doc) file with a table of contents with
links to other sections within the document.

When I press enter I go to the correct place.
Problem is whenever I exit; the file asks if I want to save my changes
I did not make any changes; just reading through the document. How can I
fix the file so I can use the table of contents correctly
and not accidentally change the file structure or layout in some unknown
way?

I cannot share the file; it is confidential from work.
Thank you,
Bill

Most networks like CBS or ABC have some programs available to stream to
your PC for free. But the best source of free streaming programs I have
found is hulu.com. It was funded by NBC and Fox, but has much more!

NetFlix now has unlimited streaming of movies to your PC, X-Box, PS3 or
Roku box for as little as $8 per month. I bought my daughter a Roku box
to attach to her TV so she can watch movies streamed from the Internet
using a remote rather than picking up and returning rental DVDs. I have
not tried streaming to my PC yet, but will before Christmas. I will soon
know if the Netflix player works well with JAWS.

2009-12-13 Thread David Griffith
Microsoft document Image scanning is an option for virtual scan, but as I
say Kurzweil is , in my experience, pretty hopeless with google Books and
sadly the Microsoft option is only a little better.

I think Google books is a genuinely hard access nut to crack. I am not sure
that if you try printing the whole web page whether anything will come out
which you can physically scan. You could give this a try though.

2009-12-13 Thread Mark

Hi
I have been practicing with Google Books today. I thought I would
report my findings so far. First I search for a fraise,, next I press enter
on the link that indicates that the entire book is available. After that
there is a link that says plain text. Once a person presses enter on this
the page loads with the book in plain text. Yes! It is wonderful. Totally
screen reader friendly. Now, if I can only get it to work on the Google book
that I actually need, I will have it made.

Hi, Randy,

I know what you mean about your head starting to split because that's how
I'm feeling about windows messenger. I'm so tired of it coming up every time
I try to do email messages, go on the internet or even just go on the
desktop. I wish I was able to help you with eudora but I haven't used that
program before. One of the reasons I uninstalled thunderbird was it kept
asking me for my password--plus it was more complicated than I thought it
would be.
