Re: [Blind-Computing] scripts to uninstall windows messenger

2009-12-16 Thread Ch.B.
Just go ahead and disable windows messenger in 'services'.
Go to start, then system, type in services in the search field there, go to
local services. Tab down to windows messenger and in the drop down box
choose 'deactivate'
Then it won't start up again.

[Blind-Computing] Recording with line in

2009-12-16 Thread Elaine
Hi guys

wonder if anyone could help? I am recording from TV satellite on to my
computer using line in and a RCA/stereo cable. doesn't appear to matter what
volume level I use, I hear a humming sound in the background of the recording.
does anyone know what causes this annoying sound and if I can find a way of
removing it.

I have gold wave and have tried to filter the sound out, but it then distorts
the rest of the recording

I've replaced the cable and tried a different computer, with no change, so I
can only assume it's something to do with my satellite box.

any help would be appreciated.

thanks in advance

You might try hooking the earphone jack from the satelite TV to the line in

[Blind-Computing] Microsoft security essentials

2009-12-16 Thread Jacob Kruger

Hi there

Just uninstalled MS security essentials to see if it might have been causing
problems with my ADSL connection due to some or other firewall type issue,
and really not sure, but, in any case, when I uninstalled it and reinstalled
eset nod32, and let it run a scan on the C: drive, it immediately found 4
trojan/worm infected/infectious files that security essentials hadn't done
anything to/about.

This is after doing a clean reinstall of the machine around 2 weeks ago, and
immediately installing security essentials afterwards before installing much
other software, apart from things like jaws etc.

I also didn't really change any of it's default settings that can remember
off hand, but just wondering if anyone else has had similar finds/issues
therewith, and will also see how my internet connection works now since just
replaced the ADSL modem/router in case that was causing the problems where
it will drop a connection halfway through downloading around 50 emails of
around a total of 700kb, or let me download them and then just refuse to
even do a google search until I try things like renewing dynamic IP
configuration, restarting both machine and modem/router, etc. etc.

Now, not saying it was definitely this software causing the internet
connection issue, but it definitely missed around 4 files that eset nod32
says are not safe, etc.

Stay well

Re: [Blind-Computing] Text Aloud error

2009-12-16 Thread David Griffith
Speculating really but the fact that the wav conversion is ok seems to
indicate some kind of resources issue with the mp3 creation. The
documentation for Text Aloud does warn that not all systems will tolerate
the highest conversion rates.
I would experiment with reducing the conversion rate in the settings under
voice and file options. You need to press control tab to move from voice
options to file options to adjust the conversion rate.

By the way the email support for text aloud from Ken White at Next Up is in
my experience very good. This may not be available if you have the free
version given out by giveaway of the day.
