Re: [Blind-Computing] Switching Windows 7 to Classic View
hey all, why not install the clasic shell? something that you may get by searching through the search engines? -- From: Scorpio Forever scorpio...@gmail.com Sent: Wednesday, July 07, 2010 10:27 AM To: blind Computing blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: [Blind-Computing] Switching Windows 7 to Classic View Hi All, I've tried and tried, but to no avail. I am running a Toshiba L500 laptop with Windows 7 64 bit edition home. I am trying to get Windows to appear like Classic Windows, but for the life of me, I simply can't do it. I should also say that I'm using Jaws 11 latest build 64 bit edition. I've gone and sought out the Microsoft Technical bulletin on how to do this, but some of the steps they're suggesting just aren't there. A perfect example is how they tell you to switch to the classic start menu. They say to go to the Control Panel, then to appearances and personalization's, then to the personalization link, then to taskbar and start menu properties, then to the start menu tab, and on that tab, you're supposed to select classic start menu. Well, first and foremost, the appearances and personalization link isn't there, and while the personalization and taskbar and start menu properties links are there, this selection to choose the classic start menu is simply not there. All I've got on that tab is a customize button, and a few other things, like show recent programs and recent files checkboxes, and one other thing, but like I said, I've gone through the entire thing, and nothing is thee. So, does anyone have any suggestions? I've also found that the start menu has two icons for Internet Explorer, one for 64 bit, and another stating just Internet Explorer. I figured out that it's the second one I want, but there isn't even one on the desktop. I've got other icons like computer and control panel on the desktop, but the important ones like Internet Explorer and a few others I was looking for just aren't there. So, can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Please? Thanks. I asked Eric bout that, he said xp still works and that's what he had on a laptop there with the Pearl. It's totally portable really folds up nicely and they give a very nice leather padded case to carry it in, it uses elegance and Open Book 9. He said the upgrade from 8 to 9 would cost without an SMA $150. The SMA only applies to OB not Jaws. But it uses the same kieys to scan as I use now. Re: [Blind-Computing] comparison of pearl and eye-pal
This might be your solution. It was fast and the price plus the portability might be your idea choice. The Pearl is no bigger than a desk lamp very streamline would need to sit on top of a desk or other surface as for the height extension of the device it's self. A flat bed scanner with a lid needs a certain clearance to use as well anyways, but not portable as in this device. If that didn't suit your needs, then go for the NFB reader for your cell which does a pretty good job of scanning too, that doesn't get any more portable.. You can get that, as well as color identifier, Mobil speaks on a phone for $1200. - Original Message - From: Rick Watson rwat...@eckeranch.com To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Thursday, July 08, 2010 10:47 AM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] comparison of pearl and eye-pal I'm debating about ordering the camera for now because the 600 price ends july 15. [Blind-Computing] a computer alternative to cable
Does anyone know of anything that is comparable to cable or satellite with real cable stations that I can use my computer to listen to? I ask this because the cable company up here is really being a pain about where I live, and I can not have a satellite in my apartment complex. I will have no trouble getting high-speed Internet, I will do it from ATT, as much as I hate it, but they only have cable through their Directv up here. I am not looking for some Tv service that gives you access to some weird channels no one has ever heard of. Any response is helpful. Thanks. Re: [Blind-Computing] Keeping my wireless adapter connected
I believe in the recent past, I used the same Linksys wireless adaptor as you are speaking of. Do you plug it into one of the ports of your computer? Well, anyway, I use a Qwest wireless adapter now, as my modem is a Qwest modem. But here is what happened to me and the Linksys adapter. Hope you've got a light probe or can get a set of eyes. Once I had my computer rebuilt from the Trojans, each time I turned it on, my Linksys adapter would not come on. I literally had to go into Control Panel under connections and hook up to my wireless again. Eventually, my Linksys adapter wasn't coming on at all. I called in a set of eyes. Problem, no light was showing on the Linksys adapter. I think I may have dropped it. It's not quite two years old. Anyway, went to Best Buy and for $46 got a Qwest wireless adapter. Now adays they even install themselves. Hope this helps! To handle yourself, use your head; to handle others, use your heart. [Blind-Computing] how hard to install a wireless router
Last night I was told that installing a wireless router to a cable is rather simple. Is it something that can be done without vision? The local cable company asks so much for making the connection that I assumed it was extremely difficult. If it requires vision, does it require color distinction since one person with vision I can ask for help is color blind. Thanks for any input. Re: [Blind-Computing] how hard to install a wireless router
Hello Lloyd, While setting up a wireless router is fairly easy in terms of setting up encryption and the like, in other words, a Wireless password so only people who have the password can access it, the hardware setup can be moderate to advanced, depending on the type of service you have. If you have or are looking to install a wireless router on a service utilizing DSL service, then it may be difficult without sighted help, as the installation required the installation of filters to the existing phone jacks, and those phone jack filters are rarely easy for a blind person to be able to distinguish between the line in and line out. for the router and the phone line. Having said that, you said your friend is colour blind, and so the difficulty level drops significantly for him, as he can look at the diagrams on the filters to be able to distinguish between the two jacks that have to be plugged in. The only problem I could see him encountering, and this would be with both services, cable and DSL, is being able to tell whether the router is online or not. This part requires some colour identification with the lights on the router, and so if he cannot tell what colour the lights are, he can't advise the rep, if he calls, what colour they are. With the cable service, it's a bit more simplified, as it does not involve any filtering of the lines, and just requires straight lines into the router, and those are fairly hard to miss. In most cases though, as soon as you tell the service provider that you're blind/visually impaired, or even colour blind, in most cases, they are required to send out a tech to install the piece of equipment, as it does require sight to distinguish the colours on the router. You should enquire about that. Once the hardware is set up, the rest is fairly simple, and just involves logging into the router to set up any firewall, although this part is already configured by default, unless your friend operates a server or something else that would require remote access, and setting up a password for the wireless. Advanced users will often access the router to increase the time out protocols and connection types, but these are better left alone for people who have little experience with those types of settings. It's all done through your Internet browser, like Firefox or Internet Explorer, and does require a username and password, but that can be given to you by your ISP tech support. Hope this helps.
