[Blind-Computing] Restoring my active desktop

2010-11-26 Thread niamh
Hi All
I asked a couple of weeks ago about restoring my Active Desktop and I
noticed a few answers, thank you all.
However it turned out to be a very nasty piece of malware.
a warning to you all it comes in an apparent email from DHL who i deal with
all the time for work, destroyed my entire set up, now completely clean on
different computer.
Again thanks for the help and apologies to the moderator if this appears
slightly off topic.
I am still shattered by it all so this is blind girl's therapy.

2010-11-26 Thread David

Hello Rosemarie;

you should be able to get ServicePack3 through the MicrosoftWindowsUpdate.
you can get a download if you wish to do it that way.
however, through Microsoft, you will only get the files required for your
computer.

I did try the web site, I had no trouble accessing the page.

I already went to that site earlier today. Do I have to install service
pack three in order to use it? I even wrote to the support team for web IE
and haven't gotten an answer yet.

SP3 is the most recent service pack update to Windows XP. If you don't have
it installed on your XP system, shame on you! SP3 is a collection of
security updates and patches that addresses vulnerability issues in XP. To
determine which service pack is currently installed on your XP machine, go
to the Desktop (Windows key-M), focus on My Computer and press Alt-Enter to
launch the Properties dialog. You should hear an announcement of your
operating system and current service pack.

[Blind-Computing] Advice on getting a new computer

2010-11-26 Thread Francis E. Khan
I have been advised to get a new computer to help me do what I am doing and
wonder whether it would be better to build a machine instead of purchasing one
from the brands that are now available. This is what I want.

My computer should be equipped with Windows 7 professional and I am told that
it should be a 64-bit setup. What is the difference between a 32-bit and
64-bit machine and what are the advantages of having either one. It should
also have at least 4 GB of RAM and a fast enough processor. It should be
equipped with a good sound card that can show up the music that I am listening
to but I have no idea of choosing a sound card.

At this point in time I am using Office 2003 professional which I can use
pretty good but my nephew has sent me Office 2007 and I don't know anything
about using the ribbon menus. What about the motherboard which I should
purchase to get the best out of the package. One other thing: I have been
told that some software is not available for 64-bit computers. The last thing
I need to have is a TV card so that I can listen to programmes on television.

I hope my message makes some sense and I look forward to all the advice you can
give.

Chris is right. If you have a need to control several computers or are
running a server, or want to use pro versions of operating systems, then get
the pro license. If you don't do any of these things then the standard Jaws
license will do just fine. It should still be a crime that Freedom
scientific is needlessly robbing us of extra $300 in cash, but just my
opinion.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Advice on getting a new
computer

I have been advised to get a new computer to help me do
what I am doing
 and
wonder whether it would be better to build a machine
instead of purchasing
one from the brands that are now available. This is what
I want.

My computer should be equipped with Windows 7 professional
and I am told
that it should be a 64-bit setup. What is the difference
between a 32-bit
and 64-bit machine and what are the advantages of having
either one. It
should also have at least 4 GB of RAM and a fast enough
processor. It
should be equipped with a good sound card that can show up
the music that
 I
am listening to but I have no idea of choosing a sound
card.

At this point in time I am using Office 2003 professional
which I can use
pretty good but my nephew has sent me Office 2007 and I
don't know
 anything
about using the ribbon menus. What about the motherboard
which I should
purchase to get the best out of the package. One other
thing: I have
 been
told that some software is not available for 64-bit
computers. The last
thing I need to have is a TV card so that I can listen to
programmes on
 television.

I hope my message makes some sense and I look forward to
all the advice

Daily Tip:
Word Shortcuts

Microsoft Word is perfectly navigable with a mouse and a few clicks on the
Ribbon, but it also has loads of keyboard shortcuts that you can take advantage
of while you're typing away. Once learned, these can make your work
significantly more efficient. Here are a few favorites:

CTRL-C copies a highlighted section of text.
CTRL-P pastes a copied section of text.
CTRL-X cuts any highlighted text; generally, the next step would be to paste
the cut section somewhere else.
CTRL-D brings up the Font window; from here you can modify font, text size,
character spacing, and styles.
END moves the cursor to the end of a line.
CTRL-K brings up the Hyperlink window.
SHIFT-F7 brings up the Thesaurus window.
CTRL-S saves the open document.

Daily Term:
ligature

A combination character used with some fonts when two regular characters appear
next to each other and bump against each other. For example, a publisher may
replace the letters ff with a ligature that connects the short line in the
middle of the characters.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Advice on getting a new computer

2010-11-26 Thread Andre Williams
We're talking building high-end not low-end stuff most people use on a daily
basis.

An I-7 quadcore processor at 3 GHz will set you back $300.
High-end Corsair dominator ram will set you back about $170 for 6 gigs.
A western digital VelociRaptor HD will set you back about $270.
A good motherboard will set you back about $300.

Your average Dell computer will set you back about $600.

It all depends on the level of performance you are looking for.

Most blind people don't need much in terms of a high-end performance machine
so the $600 dell will do.

Andre,

Not so sure on the savings of building your own? I have not
done so since being blind but did so on a regular basis when
I still had sight. Toward the end, I was finding it
difficult if not impossible to build my own for what I could
buy a good off the shelf system. Just my opinion and things
may be different now but I would check around

For what you are describing you should look into a big name
computer
manufacturer and make life easy on yourself.
If you trust the person building the computer than you will
save quite a bit
of money if you build yourself.

A family member will be doing the work. TEhanks for
reminding me about the
mother board and processor.

4 GB of RAM will work and I can live with a 32-bit computer.

Firstly, who will be building the machine? You, or a
family member, or a
computer store? I'm asking because prices will range
significantly
 depending
on who is building the machine.

What is it that you're doing? no need to build a
powerhouse of a computer
 if
you will only be using NotePad and casually browsing the
internet.

Why is Windows7 Pro a necessity? the Jaws license will
cost you about $300
more than regular license. Window eyes license will not
demand this
 outrageous additional cost.

A 64-bit machine will allow for more ram to be used--up to
24 gigs. A
 32-bit
version of Windows 7 will only allow for 4 gigs of ram
max. If you will be
processing large audio or video files as is the case with
a media center
 PC
then you will want Windows 64-bit.

If you want a good high-end sound card then expect to pay
an additional
$150+--at the very least. My motherboard came with an
8-channel sound card
that seems to be doing the job for me. I use it with a 2.1
speaker system
 and it sounds great.

You can install Office 2003 on your Windows 7 machine
without a problem.

Motherboards vary in cost from under $100 to $350+.

You may also need to buy a new processor that will run
with your current
 motherboard.

A TV tuner card will cost you about $90+ for a good one.
You can buy a
 remote control for about $15.

If all this is a mystery to you then plan on spending the
next couple of
weeks doing your research, or get an experienced person to
help you build
the computer. In all honesty, unless that friend or family
member is
 willing
to be your go to tech support, you should buy an already
assembled off the
 shelf Home Theatre PC.

for what you want, I'm thinking you will probably be
spending about $1000
for a low-end machine or up to $1700 for a nice almost top
of the line
home-built machine. An equivalent machine from Dell will
cost you about
 $2400 to $3200 respectively.

If I were you I'd jump on the newegg.com or amazon.com and
look around
because its black Friday today and there's lots of good
deals on these
 items.

I have never tried out NVDA; only because I have been a JAWS user

for 9
years and am very used to it. JAWS was provided to me by my

Vocational Rehab
councilor so it has not cost me a cent. If I did not have that

option, I'm

sure I would give NVDA a serious try.

Hi Chriss,
I have NVDA but I use my Jaws program as my primary screen

I find the voices on NVDA very hard to understand.
Just my opinion.
