Re: [Blind-Computing] Deleted folder in Outlook 2003

2011-01-31 Thread Jacob Kruger
Glad you found it, but remember those folders aren't actually all that
separate on the hard drive as such - they generally get stored inside a
single outlook folder called something like outlook.pbx, under your user
settings, etc.

Glad you got it back anyway...

have just missed it a couple times. Funny though a computer search for it
never produced its location.

I deleted a folder in Outlook which I thought was a sub-folder of the one

actually deleted and it took the whole lot.

Ouch I need that info. It doesn't show up under Deleted items, the undo
command is grayed out and it doesn't show up in the Recycle bin of
Windows.

Is there a way to get it back or am I tattooed?

Re: [Blind-Computing] converting files

2011-01-31 Thread Jacob Kruger

Almost sounds like some form of language/character set/encoding conversion,
if you get my drift - that might make it show up as a bunch of weird
characters, etc.

If, using windows 7, in the start menu, you start typing language, there
should be something

like an option to set/change microsoft office language settings, and while I
haven't looked at this as such, you might find something there - as in, just
make sure it's set to the right language you want to make use of, and,
preferably the same one the older machine was using - as in US english, etc.

Alternatively, on something like windows XP, under control panel, there's an
item called something like regional and language settings, but also possible
office there also has it's own language settings - look under tools menu in
word, for either an item like that, or in it's options dialogue.

Hi Lenny,
I would be inclined to agree with you.
Shutting the external drive off with it's switch shouldn't have any affect
on the computer,
however, if the drive is being written to at the time you turn it off, this
will most certainly cause data loss or corruption.

Well I did not think it possible for an ex hd to crash your computer.
Yesterday I turned the computer on downloaded my email and turned the ex
hd on. I heard the windows tones for a new device but it was not in the
list. Cycled the drive a few times with same results. Restarted windows
and it would not start. Forced a power down and restarted with same non
responsive results. Turned the drive off and tried to start the computer
and there were windows files trashed. Recovered the system and lost the
early morning emails. Since there was nothing more to lose I toyed with
the hd. After cycling it several times it was finally recognized. I
started calling to find a replacement. One of the computer stores told me
that by turning it on and off it realigned the lazars. He recommended
that I leave it powered on until I get the replacement drive then copy
everything over. Think I will try this with image for windows.

Near the near bottom of the list in Device Manager, there will be a
grouping
for Universal Serial Bus Controllers. You do not want to disable them,
that
will not cause Windows to reinstall them. Instead, just remove them by
highlighting each one and pressing the Delete key. Windows should start
reinstalling each one fairly quickly. In fact, it might be hard to know
which ones you already deleted since they come back quickly.

[Blind-Computing] ext hd power question

2011-01-31 Thread Lenny McHugh
Does the power switch on the external hd drive do anything other than cut the
power? Wondering if it triggers some sort of shut down procedure. I have been
using my drive always powered on and controlled by a surge controller panel.
The surge protector I use has switches to power on the computer, monitor,
printer and accessories. In the computer power I have a power strip in which I
have the computer, speakers and modem. and in the accessory I have the external
drive. So I cut the power to the drive when I do not need it. Just wondering if
this caused the failure.

[Blind-Computing] Odd error message in Outlook

2011-01-31 Thread Brad Dunse
Outlook was having some issues with my doing some major editing of Contacts
and would shut down when returning to the Contacts screen, but then start
back up after answering if I wanted to report it or not. After coming
backup however it gave the below message. I see this morning when I cranked
it back up, though it didn't crash or any sort of thing, it once again gave
me this message and doesn't download messages until I hit yes. Any clues
what it might be?

Near the near bottom of the list in Device Manager, there will be a grouping

for Universal Serial Bus Controllers. You do not want to disable them, that

will not cause Windows to reinstall them. Instead, just remove them by
highlighting each one and pressing the Delete key. Windows should start
reinstalling each one fairly quickly. In fact, it might be hard to know
which ones you already deleted since they come back quickly.

Hi All;

I have a couple of USB ports that are not working. What I want to do is
disable all of my USB ports. When I go into the Device Manager, what are
the USB ports called in there? I'm running XP Home. I definitely don't
want to have a brainfart while in the Device Manager! I just want to
disable the ports & restart the computer so XP will install all the USB
drivers. All help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks much, take care.
