MKV is a metroska video format container. It can be used to host a number of video/audio formats. I think it may become the new standard, replacing avi. [Blind-Computing] mainstream OCR packages?
Hello everyone. Finally got a scanner for the first time in years. Just wondering if anyone uses standard commercial OCR software (iE, not kurzweil or OpenBook) and which ones you feel most comfortable with? I may shell out for Open Book, but I'm not the only one using this computer, and it'd be nice if I could just acquire a standard OCR package. I remember someone telling me years ago that something they were using worked well with JAWS and possibly other screenreaders as well...may have been FineReader, but I can't honestly remember. Re: [Blind-Computing] mainstream OCR packages?
Hi, I just use standard OCR software. The two programs that I use that both work well with JAWS are Abby Fine Reader 9.0 as well as ReadIris 12 Pro. My Epson scanner already came with the CD to install Abby Fine Reader, and I found that it works well, and you can scan to Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, PDF, or to your email. ReadIris 12 is also good for scanning documents, and it allows you to take image files in your computer and turn them into editable text, which is good to have to gain access to text that may be in an image file that we cannot read. Also, ReadIris 12 Pro can recognize hand-printed text, so if someone writes you a note, it will be recognized, although the note has to be written very neatly in print letters, and you have to draw a frame around the text. I've never tried this feature myself, because most documents I have are typed, but it is built into the software. My Epson scanner came with the CD to install Abby Fine Reader, and my all-in-one printer came with a limited version of ReadIris with the option to upgrade at a discounted price (I think it was $79 if I remember correctly.) If you check the CD and documentation that came with your scanner, you may find that there is an OCR program already on the CD, although it depends on the scanner that you get. Anyway, I have found both softwares to work well. I use them on a daily basis to scan mail, documents, and textbooks without any problems. Hope this helps. The structure of thos pages is somewhat different, so you need to figure out how to browse, etc. For example, while on initial movie vault page it seems to show newest movies, if you in fact select a letter grouping from drop down box, but leave search field blank, and then hit enter on search button, it should, hopefully, list all movies starting with the relevant letter, etc. HTH Jacob Kruger Blind Biker Skype: BlindZA '...fate had broken his body, but not his spirit...' - Original Message - From: George Marshall marshall.geo...@gmail.com To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Wednesday, December 28, 2011 4:39 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Described Movies Hi: Jacob I have signed up and registered, but don't find nearly as many titles as was on the old site. Ok, just after sending this, I went into godMode control panel interface, and under administrative tools, hit enter on Create and format hard disk partitions, and right clicked on C drive, and chose shrink from the context menu, and after doing a form of analysis, it offered to let me shrink the drive partition by the relevant 247Gb, and I think I'd then be able to get it to format the then unpartitioned space easily enough, so, question answered...smile As in, should have looked for it myself before sending message to list - sorry. [Blind-Computing] Looking for a Specialized Printer
Can anyone on this list suggest a specialized printer? What I'm looking for is a small, compact printer that would feature a sort of mini tray for source paper; paper specifically the size of a typical check. I realize that the QuickBooks type of checks are available, but I personally dislike using those and would prefer to be able to print out checks from a regular checkbook. I'd sure appreciate if anybody could steer me toward such a small,, special-purpose printer. Thanks! To You Yours: A Very Merry Christmas Happy New Year !!! Holland Bill - `There are many things from which I might have derived good, by which I have not profited, I dare say,' returned the nephew. `Christmas among the rest. But I am sure I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round -- apart from the veneration due to its sacred name and origin, if anything belonging to it can be apart from that -- as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time: the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow-passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys. And therefore, uncle, though it has never put a scrap of gold or silver in my pocket, I believe that it has done me good, and will do me good; and I say, God bless it!' - A Christmas Carol, 1843, Charles Dickens For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Re: [Blind-Computing] mkv exgtension??
Well, not familiar with the Moviemaker programme as such, but to my knowledge most DVD players will not play such file formats, so if you want to play it like a standard DVD you will have to convert to full DVD .. it's a bit like burning MP3s to an audio CD, but then you probably know that already. I assume that whatever you can do with .avi files, with the right software and codecs, you should be able to do with .mkv as well. But it really depends more on the type of encoding used rather than the container file that happens to hold them. I know this can all be a bit confusing and I haven't quite gotten the hang of all the different video encoding methods myself. Best thing is just to try and see if it works. BTW programmes like winamp, media player and vlc should be able to play your .mkv files, too. however, you may have to download special codecs if they don't immediately work. - Original Message - From: Kimsan kimsans...@aol.com To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Wednesday, December 28, 2011 3:50 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] mkv exgtension?? if you go to the combo box enter on it, then it starts out with 2009, you can select that, press the space bar to leave that combo box and tab to search and more titles will pop up. the download process is a bit tricky if your like me without a paid send space account, it's slow as molasses, lol, but it finally get's there. make sure you do the save thingy, unless you want to risk just opening/running it first, but it's better to save it first. So, any experiences to share? Re: [Blind-Computing] mainstream OCR packages?
Hi, Yes, the cost is one of the main reasons that I went with mainstream OCR products in the first place, because both OpenBook and Kurzweil, while they are great products, cost a lot. HahaI seem to remember the price of Open Book being more reasonable back in the day. Well, I may check out that bargains thing as was recommended but really, that kind of price is simply absurd. - Original Message - From: tcors...@cfl.rr.com To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Wednesday, December 28, 2011 11:15 AM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] mainstream OCR packages? For instance, Open Book has a currency identification feature and a photo copying feature, neither of which are available in mainstream OCR programs. Before you decide on a scanning program, check out http://www.readingmadeez.com/products/TextClonerPro.html I've been using it for several years. It does the job quite nicely for me and at a fraction of the cost of other programs. Cost is $99.95 and you can download a trial version to check out.
