MKV is a metroska video format container. It can be used to host a number of
video/audio formats. I think it may become the new standard, replacing avi.
Anyway, I'm not sure what you mean by asking if you can burn it to
discdo you want to make a playable DVD?

Hi,

What is an mkv file and can you burn it to a disc? I downloaded something
but it had an mkv extension and once I entered on it, movie maker opened
up.

Thanks for any explination/clarification.

[Blind-Computing] mainstream OCR packages?

2011-12-28 Thread JM Casey

Hello everyone.

Finally got a scanner for the first time in years. Just wondering if anyone
uses standard commercial OCR software (iE, not kurzweil or OpenBook) and
which ones you feel most comfortable with? I may shell out for Open Book,
but I'm not the only one using this computer, and it'd be nice if I could
just acquire a standard OCR package. I remember someone telling me years ago
that something they were using worked well with JAWS and possibly other
screenreaders as well...may have been FineReader, but I can't honestly
remember. So, any experiences to share?

I've been using it for several years. It does the job quite nicely for me

Re: [Blind-Computing] mainstream OCR packages?

2011-12-28 Thread Misty Dawn Bradley

Hi,
I just use standard OCR software. The two programs that I use that both work
well with JAWS are Abby Fine Reader 9.0 as well as ReadIris 12 Pro. My Epson
scanner already came with the CD to install Abby Fine Reader, and I found
that it works well, and you can scan to Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel,
PDF, or to your email. ReadIris 12 is also good for scanning documents, and
it allows you to take image files in your computer and turn them into
editable text, which is good to have to gain access to text that may be in
an image file that we cannot read. Also, ReadIris 12 Pro can recognize
hand-printed text, so if someone writes you a note, it will be recognized,
although the note has to be written very neatly in print letters, and you
have to draw a frame around the text. I've never tried this feature myself,
because most documents I have are typed, but it is built into the software.
My Epson scanner came with the CD to install Abby Fine Reader, and my
all-in-one printer came with a limited version of ReadIris with the option
to upgrade at a discounted price (I think it was $79 if I remember
correctly.) If you check the CD and documentation that came with your
scanner, you may find that there is an OCR program already on the CD,
although it depends on the scanner that you get.
Anyway, I have found both softwares to work well. I use them on a daily
basis to scan mail, documents, and textbooks without any problems.

Hope this helps.
Thanks,

The structure of thos pages is somewhat different, so you need to figure out
how to browse, etc.

For example, while on initial movie vault page it seems to show newest
movies, if you in fact select a letter grouping from drop down box, but
leave search field blank, and then hit enter on search button, it should,
hopefully, list all movies starting with the relevant letter, etc.

None of the mainstream OCR programs like ABBYY Fine Reader or Reading Made

Hello.
Before you decide on a scanning program, check out

http://www.readingmadeez.com/products/TextClonerPro.html
I've been using it for several years. It does the job quite nicely for
me
and at a fraction of the cost of other programs. Cost is $99.95 and you
can

download a trial version to check out.

Hello everyone.

Finally got a scanner for the first time in years. Just wondering if
anyone uses standard commercial OCR software (iE, not kurzweil or
OpenBook) and which ones you feel most comfortable with? I may shell out
for Open Book, but I'm not the only one using this computer, and it'd be
nice if I could just acquire a standard OCR package. I remember someone
telling me years ago that something they were using worked well with
JAWS
and possibly other screenreaders as well...may have been FineReader, but
I

can't honestly remember. So, any experiences to share?

hello Misty.

Thanks, FineReader is indeed the one I was thinking of, and I believe I will
give that one a try. Sounds like many people have had plenty of success with
it.

Hi,
I just use standard OCR software. The two programs that I use that both
work well with JAWS are Abby Fine Reader 9.0 as well as ReadIris 12 Pro.
My Epson scanner already came with the CD to install Abby Fine Reader, and
I found that it works well, and you can scan to Microsoft Word, Microsoft
Excel, PDF, or to your email. ReadIris 12 is also good for scanning
documents, and it allows you to take image files in your computer and turn
them into editable text, which is good to have to gain access to text that
may be in an image file that we cannot read. Also, ReadIris 12 Pro can
recognize hand-printed text, so if someone writes you a note, it will be
recognized, although the note has to be written very neatly in print
letters, and you have to draw a frame around the text. I've never tried
this feature myself, because most documents I have are typed, but it is
built into the software.

Thanks,

Misty Dawn Bradley

Re: [Blind-Computing] mainstream OCR packages?

2011-12-28 Thread Becky B.

Hi Cathy.
Openbook may have a few bells and whistles that Text Cloner does not have,
but it reads typed text quite well using your own screen reading program
which is what I want. I highly recommend the trial version which is free
and is the full version. It meets my needs quite nicely.

Hi Donna!
Yes, (D) is a smiley in WLM for Martini so JAWS also recognizes it; try
unchecking show emoticons in the messages list under tools/options or try
some alternatives like small d instead or just D) without the left
parenthesis if it's also acceptable on their part.

Type with no spaces, left parenthesis then Capital d and then right
parenthesis.

I was voting on something and did this and thought I was voting for the D
option and Jaws said martini glass. I then called my sighted husband in to
look and it showed a martini. Am I going crazy? I don’t particularly like
martinis, but what the heck!

[Blind-Computing] Looking for a Specialized Printer

2011-12-28 Thread Bill Gallik
Can anyone on this list suggest a specialized printer? What I'm looking for
is a small, compact printer that would feature a sort of mini tray for
source paper; paper specifically the size of a typical check. I realize
that the QuickBooks type of checks are available, but I personally dislike
using those and would prefer to be able to print out checks from a regular
checkbook. I'd sure appreciate if anybody could steer me toward such a
small,, special-purpose printer.

Thanks!

if anything belonging to it can be apart from that -- as a good time; a
kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time: the only time I know of, in the

Re: [Blind-Computing] mkv exgtension??

2011-12-28 Thread JM Casey
Well, not familiar with the Moviemaker programme as such, but to my
knowledge most DVD players will not play such file formats, so if you want
to play it like a standard DVD you will have to convert to full DVD .. it's
a bit like burning MP3s to an audio CD, but then you probably know that
already.

I assume that whatever you can do with .avi files, with the right software
and codecs, you should be able to do with .mkv as well. But it really
depends more on the type of encoding used rather than the container file
that happens to hold them.

I know this can all be a bit confusing and I haven't quite gotten the hang
of all the different video encoding methods myself. Best thing is just to
try and see if it works.

BTW programmes like winamp, media player and vlc should be able to play your
.mkv files, too. however, you may have to download special codecs if they
don't immediately work.

MKV is a metroska video format container. It can be used to host a number
of
video/audio formats. I think it may become the new standard, replacing
avi.

Anyway, I'm not sure what you mean by asking if you can burn it to
discdo you want to make a playable DVD?

Hi,

What is an mkv file and can you burn it to a disc? I downloaded something
but it had an mkv extension and once I entered on it, movie maker opened
up.

Thanks for any explination/clarification.

if you go to the combo box enter on it, then it starts out with 2009, you
can select that, press the space bar to leave that combo box and tab to
search and more titles will pop up. the download process is a bit tricky if
your like me without a paid send space account, it's slow as molasses, lol,
but it finally get's there.
make sure you do the save thingy, unless you want to risk just
opening/running it first, but it's better to save it first. Also, last night
I got Ray super fast, but ti wasn't the movie just the intro.

Hi,
I just use standard OCR software. The two programs that I use that both
work well with JAWS are Abby Fine Reader 9.0 as well as ReadIris 12 Pro.
My Epson scanner already came with the CD to install Abby Fine Reader,
and I found that it works well, and you can scan to Microsoft Word,
Microsoft Excel, PDF, or to your email. ReadIris 12 is also good for
scanning documents, and it allows you to take image files in your
computer and turn them into editable text, which is good to have to gain
access to text that may be in an image file that we cannot read. Also,
ReadIris 12 Pro can recognize hand-printed text, so if someone writes you
a note, it will be recognized, although the note has to be written very
neatly in print letters, and you have to draw a frame around the text.
I've never tried this feature myself, because most documents I have are
typed, but it is built into the software.
My Epson scanner came with the CD to install Abby Fine Reader, and my
all-in-one printer came with a limited version of ReadIris with the
option to upgrade at a discounted price (I think it was $79 if I remember
correctly.) If you check the CD and documentation that came with your
scanner, you may find that there is an OCR program already on the CD,
although it depends on the scanner that you get.
Anyway, I have found both softwares to work well. I use them on a daily
basis to scan mail, documents, and textbooks without any problems.

Hope this helps.
Thanks,

Finally got a scanner for the first time in years. Just wondering if
anyone uses standard commercial OCR software (iE, not kurzweil or

for Open Book, but I'm not the only one using this computer, and it'd be

None of the mainstream OCR programs like ABBYY Fine Reader

Open Book. For instance, Open Book has a currency
