Re: [Blind-Computing] Great Windows Live Messenger Alternative

2009-02-02 Thread Jeffrey Shockley, Windows Desktop Edition
I did such a turtorial a while back for the JAWS friendly Miranda about
two years ago, I believe.

If anyone wants it, let me know and I'l send it to you. it's in MP3 format.
Things might have changed some since I made it and I don't use the JAWS
friendly Miranda anymore, but, basically, it's still the same.

Hello all,
Found a great free Windows Live Messenger alternative, which also supports
AIM, Jabba, and other protocols. It's called Miranda IM. When I get the URL
I'll send it, but let's say that it fully works with screen readers
including NVDA. Enjoy!

that was what I was hearing, my spoken words on his speakers.

 Hi Everyone,

I am using Skype version 3.5.0.214 with scripts. I having an unusual
problem when talking with a friend with a microphone.

My friend comes in clear and he can hear me loud and clear. However,
every time I say anything, my words are repeated back to me over my
speakers, thus making it somewhat difficult to carry on a decent
 conversation.

Does anyone know how to eliminate the echo?

Your help will greatly be appreciated.

Hi,
You don't need any software to do it, PowerPoint can do it.
When ya have the presentation open, just go to File/Save As, and choose
Text Files from the filetype list. RTF and HTML will also work.

I don't think you can, and, why would you want to do that? The closest
thing you can get is eather a wireless PCI lan card or a USB wireless
adapter. These cards and adapters support B, G, and sometimes, N
standards of wireless network communication.

Re: [Blind-Computing] problem moving files

2008-09-04 Thread Jeffrey Shockley, Windows Desktop Edition
Hmmm. Try running a Disk Check on the drive and check both boxes. It
will take a while and your system wil have to be restarted tfor it to
complete. JAWS won't be available during the check since windows isn't
loaded, and once it is finished, your system will restart again and
Windows should load normally.

Hi all, I have been having this problem for awhile now while trying to
move files from certain folders. The only ones I've come across that
do this are the my documents folder and all folders within it. What
happens is when I do the commands either alt-e then f to copy or alt-e
v to move, the files will move to the new location, but Windows
Explorer then gives an error saying it needs to close. After this a
message from Dr. Watson Postmortem Debugger comes up. Once this
message appears there seems to be no way to get rid of it because Jaws
freezes, and it seems the whole computer does too because I can't get
into the start menu or desktop or anything. I did a little research on
the internet and found a few blogs saying that this was a virus and
there were steps to remove it. However, there were new entries that
said this virus was no longer a problem since all anti-virus programs
should pick it up now. So I'm wondering what else it could be, because
the only way I've been able to fix the problem is to reboot the
computer when it happens, and if I want to copy any files from any
folder in my documents, I do the standard cut and paste commands,
which don't produce this problem. But if it really is a virus, I would
really like to know so I can get rid of it. But wouldn't you think if
that was the case Avast would've picked it up by now? Thanks for any
 and all suggestions.

 Hi Patricia,

As you've already seen, most external drives are plug and play, so you
 don't
need to do anything else when you plug in the drive.

I do recommend you do something before you do anything with the drive.

After you've plugged in the drive, go to the My Computer icon on your
desktop, press enter on it, highlight the external drive, and press
alt+enter to get to the properties.

Virtualize the window, and arrow down through the information to see what
 the drive is formatted as.

If it says anything but NTFS, like FAT or FAT32, then you need to
 re-format
the drive before you use it.

FAT and FAT32 are more unstable then NTFS, that's why most drives are
 formatted in NTFS.

To format the drive, press escape to close the virtual window, and escape
again to get out of the drive's properties.

If the drive is still highlighted, press the applications key, and arrow
 down to format...

It will give you the option of which format to format the drive in, at
 which
point, you select NTFS, and make sure the size of the drive is correct.

Tab to the start button, and have at it. Smile.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] External Hard Drive Question

Today we bought a 250/GB external harddrive name brand, SEA GATE.
I wanted to ask if this is a brand that works as good as the rest of them,
Western Digital?

Also, do I just plug it into the USB slot and windows will automatically
recognize the drive?

Then I can send things to that drive?

Then also, I can take it and plug it into the laptop and retrieve those
files?

Thanks,

Patricia

 Hi,
 Seagate is good.
Yes, you can just plug it in tho the USB port on your desktop and Windows
will find it and let you open it just like it would if you connected any
otehr kind of drive, such as a flash/thumb drive.
You can put files and retrieve them on your laptop by sinding them to that
drive or coppying and pasting them there.
Yes, you can just plug it into the USB port on your laptop and get htose
 fules.

I have never used Nero. But many years ago, I ran into similar
 problems.
 I
had to slow down the burn speed. If you like Nero in general, you might
want to check the options. There is usually a way to set the burn or
 write
 speed.

Try using a different CD burner program like Express Burn. It's very
JAWS-friendly and easy to use. Even a caveman like me can use it
 without

 Subject: [Blind-Computing] CD burning problem

 Hello everyone,
I'm having a strange problem when I burn an audio CD. When I burn a
 CD
the last 4 or 5 tracks skip, or sometimes they don't play at all.
 The
 CD
doesn't skip when I put it in my computer and play it using winamp,
 but
when I play it in my Bose radio the last 4 or 5 tracks will mess up.
 I'm
using Nero to burn my CD's. I gave a friend of mine the CD that kept
messing up, and she ripped it to her computer. Then she made two
 copies
of it. I gave her a blank CD of mine, and she used one of her blank
 CD's.
When she gave me the CD's that she made neither of them skipped, or
 messed
up in my bose radio. I thought about trying to burn my CD's using
 Windows
Media Player, but I don't know how to do that. Does anyone have any
 ideas
of what my problem might be, and how I can fix it? I really like
 making
CD's, so any help with this will be very much appreciated! I'm
 running
windows XP home addition, and jaws 9.
 Take care,

Hi,
No it isn't. Graphics aren't labed properly even when proper HTML code is on
the page, there isn't any way to fill out forms at least not that I can see,
and every time you open a web page that way, MS Word asks you to save the
changes. Besides, Word isn't mint to be a web browser.

I just wanted to let everyone know on this list that you can use
 microsoft

 is
and Hit control O then type in the website you want to go to and
 microsoft

mailing list just sent it to me and i tried it and it worked.
So just open microsoft word then hit the control o then type the page you
want to go to then press enter and it will open right up.

Does any one know how accessible Plurk is with JAWS?

And, has anyone used Twitter successfully w/JAWS?

Thanks.

I have just been advised that Twitter and Plurk are not similar.

I also understand that there is an explanation which compares the two.

As soon as I receive that info, I'll pass it along.
