When you choose this option, it will take you to a dialogue in the Add/Remove programs applet. In this applet, you can remove components of the operating system such as Windows Media Player, faxing, internet tools etc. This particular option, can be tricky to navigate, and should be used with the understanding that removing components of the operating system may result in unexpected side effects, since other functions of Windows may depend on these components to operate properly. Installed programs You can free more disk space by removing programs that you do not use. Choosing this option, will take you to the Add/Remove programs applet, and that one is self-explanatory. This option is a good opportunity for users to clean up programs that are not used, and free up more disk space, keeping the computer in good working order. System Restore You can free more disk space by removing all but the most recent restore point. This option, does what it says, and should be performed from time-to-time, since these extra restore points use up disk space, and with time will bog down a system. Re: [Blind-Computing] help witih nls cartridge-need directions
Hi, I don't have a cartridge but here goes. You should get a usb cable with the cartridge. You put one end on the cartridge and the other into a usb cable on your computer. Now, bring up the book name like db whater and tab until it says winzie submenu. Enter on winzip submenu and arrow down once to where it extracts. You can set it to extract to whatever the letter of your cartridge drive will be when you insert it into your computer. It would probably be drive e or f. Then you have set it to exatract to that drive, tab until it says okay and press enter. Remember, you can only have one book on the cartridge at one time. So delete whatever else might be on there and it will extract the right file. If you don't have winzip, you can download it. You want to click on use evaluation button. [Blind-Computing] nls firmware upgrade
Hi, I am having trouble to extract the upgrade on to my flash drive. When I pick extract to my flash drive with winzip, it does not extract the files but just one program called upgrade on the flash drive. However, it will list all the extracted files which is about 100 files but it won't let me copy and paste them into my flash drive. I am using winzip 9 in classic mode and I must be a total moron because to me, the extracted files should be able to be moved. I'm wondering if anyone is getting just upgrade on their flash drive or cartridge because this is sure weird. When I put the flash drive in the player, it just says no books on cartridge. Re: [Blind-Computing] Victor Stream, where's the best place to get one
Hi, As far as nls players, they have two kinds--the regular one and an advanced version. The way that the advanced is different is you can put bookmarks in certain portions of your book or something. The digital books you can download end in zip so you have to extract the files and copy them onto a cartridge or flash or thumb drive but I'm not sure if the nls machines will do what you want. On top of the unit is the earphone jack into which you plug the included earbuds. The front panel has 5 discrete buttons arranged in a vertical column. From top to bottom, the buttons are skip forward, play/pause/power, skip backward, volume up and volume down. Pressing and holding the second button from the top for 5 seconds turns the unit on, and pressing and holding it again for 5 seconds turns it off. That's all there is to it. The bottom of the unit has a USB connector that plugs directly into a USB port, although a separate USB cable is also included. You just plug it into your PC and copy and paste the MP3 files you want to download. Just install the included AAA battery and you're good to go. The sound quality is surprisingly good, at least using a better pair of earbuds than the included ones. There is absolutely no learning curve, and no sighted assistance is required to use it. The included software, which I have not tried yet, is fully JAWS accessible. With 2gb of memory, it can hold up to 1,000 songs. This is probably the best blind accessible MP3 deal ever. It is still available from JR for $10 with free shipping, but they probably won't last much longer at that price. They make wonderful stocking stuffers. The hardest part of using this gizmo is getting it out of the plastic blister pack which requires a heavy duty scissors to cut open. http://www.jr.com/coby/pe/CBY_MP2002G/ Gerald For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/ For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Hi, When I put the dvd in the drive, it spits it out so will this software recognize it is a dvd? I have a 33 gig drive and I need to back up my stuff. I would suggest that you go to the Jaws User Programs page where there are several free programs which will burn DVDS. Re: [Blind-Computing] RegCure a registry cleaner
Hi, I use it and it is jaws accessible. The only thing I had trouble was putting my key in the right place but that may be due to some function in jaws that I am not familiar with. Otherwise, if you route jaws to pc, it worked good. It backs up your registry before any changes take place. The program is not free and about every year, you have to pay it again. Re: [Blind-Computing] DVD SOFTWARE COMPATIBLE WITH JAWS
Hi, What is the link for dvd extractor? Linda Parent -Original Message- From: blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Victor Sent: Sunday, January 18, 2009 3:37 PM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] DVD SOFTWARE COMPATIBLE WITH JAWS Hello John, Look for a title called DVD Audio Extractor. It is a piece of software that rips the audio from a DVD and converts just the audio to a format such as MP3, WMA, WAV or OGG. The best part about this handy piece of software is it's ability to play the DVD titles you load into your player. There is a pause button, stop button, play button, skip a track button and previous track button. The only downside is that you cannot fast forward or rewind through a movie, nor can you place bookmarks or any other thing that one would be able to place using Winamp or Windows Media Player. having said that, DVD Audio Extractor is a very simple piece of software, is completely accessible, and very, very easy to use. I have posted a set of instructions on how to use the program, which I sent to David, but have included the text below for your information, and it includes a description of the buttons one can use to play DVD's. I should also note that you can either turn on the video screen or disable it, if you so choose. In any case, it's a really inexpensive piece of software, and again, it's really easy to use. Please see the instructions below. ***Begin Instructions Here*** I am going to detail how I do things with this program, and not how things are supposed to be done, just in case someone decides that I'm doing something wrong. For one thing, the program is pretty much completely accessible, so there are no specialty keystrokes you need to know to rip a DVD using Audio Extractor. Having said that, the following is what I do when confronted with a DVD I wish to rip. I load the DVD in the CD tray of my drive, close it, and let it do it's thing. Depending on how you have your autoplay functions set, you will either get a pop up window asking you what you want to do with the DVD or you may get nothing. If you get the autoplay dialog box, just select do nothing, and tab to the ok button. At this point, I will open up Any DVD, and let it do it's thing by decoding the DVD. You should get a message that Any DVD is examining the disc, please wait, your disc will be available shortly. Once the tray stops spinning, you'll know the DVD has been decoded by Any DVD. At this point, you can go ahead and open up DVD Audio Extractor. Once the program opens up, you'll here the DVD spin in the drive again as DVD Audio Extractor looks for the DVD that is available in any of your drives. You should automatically land on the help button, at which point you will want to tab to the combo box to select the DVD drive you've placed the disc into. The program should have selected the drive already and be listed in the combo box, but if it hasn't, then arrow up or down to the drive to select it. Once selected, you tab once and you'll land on the refresh button. If I'm ripping a second DVD after ripping the first, I will press the spacebar on this button, just to make sure the track listing is updated to reflect the new DVD in the tray. You never can be sure with software. Once you do this, tab once and you'll land on the track listing of the DVD. From my experience, I have never seen track listings like Lee has mentioned in his messages for ripping with this program. I have never been able to right arrow to the alternate language, and so find the tracks are listed by language, as opposed as in sections. What I mean by this is, when Jaws speaks out the track number, it will have the language somewhere in the track listing. It will list English, or Francais or Espanol, or some other language in the title of the track. I have never personally seen a DVD with audio description, so I really can't say what an audio description track would look like. Having said that, I would imagine that the title of the track would indicate something other than the language. As another example, I have had DVD movies, like the Fast and the Furious that have had multiple angles to a particular scene, and this, too, is indicated in the track title. It will be listed as Angle 1 or Angle 2 or something along those lines. Suffice it to say, if you look for these language names, you will be given some idea of what language you are selecting. Keep in mind that this is not always the case, as some DVD titles are not authored correctly. During the writing of this tutorial, I used a movie called March of the Penguins. The DVD case comes with two DVD's. Presumably one DVD is the English version, while the second DVD is the French version. One would expect that the English version would have the word English in the track titles, and the French version would have the word Francais, however

[Blind-Computing] saving a large mp3 file to disc
Hi, I have a large mp3 file that takes more than 1 cd. Is there any program where after disc 1 completes, it will ask for another disc? Perhaps it might be some kind of mp3 compression program sort of like winzip? There is a great website called blindmicemart.com. You can download the audible part of movies with audio description in mp3 format but they are big files. Now, I haven't been able to duplicate the error when JAWS is unloaded, but I'm not going to stop using JAWS. One programmer I talked with thinks it's abug in the Juno program and they are giving me the run around. When I google the error the only thing that comes up is a link to Reg Cure, a registry cleaner program. I downloaded the free version and if found 900 some errors. And guess what? the free version can't fix any of them! I have to download and pay for the full version to get anything done. My programmer friend doesn't seem to think that's going to solve the problem. Have you had any experience with this type of error and have you found anything that will take care of it? Re: [Blind-Computing] Fixing IE7 menus
Hi Maybe you can maximize ie. You might want to do a repair of whatever jaws version you have. I used to be able to scroll from left to right through the menus with the left and right arrow keys. Now I am locked in to what ever IE menu I happen to be on. I can scroll up and down though. Any ideas on how to fix this are appreciated.
