Re: [Blind-Computing] Character code for check mark in MS Word 2007
Hi Jerry; The square root symbol is what's supposed to be used for the checkmark symbol. In Googling how to type the square root I've found mixed answers. 1 post says that there is not a way to type the square root symbol but, on the other hand I've found that typing the, ascii code, Alt + 251, is supposed to make a square root / checkmark symbol. Be patient, I'm going to ask the Jaws-Users list . Take care. I tried the ALT 251 keystroke. Does it say "VEE"? If so, then it works (I am assuming since I have no usable vision). - Original Message - From: "Mike & Barbara" To: Sent: Tuesday, September 27, 2011 9:00 AM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Character code for check mark in MS Word 2007 Hi Jerry; The square root symbol is what's supposed to be used for the checkmark symbol. Re: [Blind-Computing] Character code for check mark in MS Word 2007
I'm not sure about the char code for it but the symbol is found under the bullets option in the home tab of the ribbon. If you do an alt + H then tab down to "bullets" then press space it will take you into a list of bullets. There you can arrow up and down through the options. The checkmark is there. Once you find it just press enter and it should place one on the page.
Hi Jerry; Below is some verification of what we are talking about is correct. Hey Mike, I use alt+251 to insert the Square Root symbol. As you already mentioned, jaws will read it as letter "v". You can add the Square Root symbol in the default dictionary manager, and then jaws will read it correctly. This is how I did it: 1. Open notepad. 2. Press ALT+251, this will insert the Square Root symbol. 3. Note that Jaws will read the Square Root symbol as letter "V". 4. Select and copy the symbol without any spaces. 5. Open the Jaws default dictionary manager from the Jaws utilities submenu. 6. Select the Add button to add new entry in the Dictionary. 6. Paste the symbol in the "Actual word" edit box. 7. Type "Square Root" in the "Replacement word" edit box. 8. Tab to OK. Re: [Blind-Computing] Character code for check mark in MS Word 2007
Hi Brad; I am running XP with no ribbons. When you say, " bullets option in the home tab of the ribbon ," exactly where are you referring to? Or, is this something that will be only in MS Word 2007 & not found in Word2002? Thanks much, take care. This probably isn't quite what you're looking for, but a "Check" list can be created in older versions of Word by selecting the "FORMAT" drop down menu and select the item that refers to Bullets and Numbering - exactly wording escapes me just now. At any rate, "Check Mark" is one of the list demarcation options. Holland's Person, Bill - Words that soak into your ears are whispered, not yelled. - source unknown, but wish I had originated it.
