Re: [Blind-Computing] defrag

2012-12-27 Thread Mike B.
Hi Anna,

I have found that defragging using the Windows defrag tool that sometimes it
won't defrag all the files for whatever reason. Try defragging in a 2 to 4
weeks see what happens at that time.
Take care.

[Blind-Computing] defrag schedule

2011-03-12 Thread Lenny McHugh
How do you change the defrag run schedule? I am using windows 7 home. When I
launch defrag I hear the notice that the automatic schedule is 2 Am on Sunday
and Tuesday. I guess that the the Sunday is for the c drive and the Tuesday is
for the d drive. I can not locate anywhere to change the schedule. My computer
is never left running all night.
When I use the windows key and then type schedule a task schedule list is
presented. Defrag is no where in the list.
TIA

[Blind-Computing] Defrag

2011-02-26 Thread pmahuika
Hi when I went to run a defrag it came up with this message

Disc defragmenter has detected that chkdsk is scheduled to run on volume c.
Please run chkdsk/f. What do I need to do to run the defrag on drive C? I do
have an external drive connected but don't wish to defrag this.

Step by step simple instructions to achieve the above would be appreciated.

Have you tried shutting the machine down and then turning
back on? Many times if chkdsk is scheduled to run it will do
so at the next boot up. Otherwise go into system tools and
schedule it for the next time you boot up

I don't know if this really matters but I do notice it scans a lot faster if
you unplug the external from the computer before turning it on also. Wow
that was like some wicked long run on sentence, grin.

Can Jaws stay on while using defrag? I unloaded JAWS, but when defrag
stopped, I couldn't get JAWS back, and had to manually restart the computer.
Where might my defrag log be in Windows XP, and what might it be called? Or
  is there one?
  Thanks for any ideas. Sharon

If you don't have kurzweil or openbook, you can make use of the scan tools
provided by Microsoft. On the Microsoft Tools submenu (I am talking about
the Start menu and not in a Microsoft application), you will find 2
scanning options, document Imaging and document scanning. The document
imaging options will scan your document into a MS-Word doc as an image which
is just fine if you are sending something to a person who does not use a
screen reader. If you want to create an accessible scanned document, you
will need to use the Document scanning option. It does a pretty good job,
but not as good as Kurzweil or openbook.

Another option for scanning software that is not all that expensive is text
Cloner Pro put out by Premier Software. It can be found at

  readingmade easy.com

You must use your own screen reader with Text Cloner Pro if I remember
  correctly.

  Annette

  Cathie Jacobse asks:
Does this apply to scanned documents as well? For example, I scan a letter
into my computer, then email it as an attachment to you. How easy is it to
  be read?

  Well Cathie,

The answer to your question depends on how you (or anybody) scanned the
document. Personally, I have Kurzweil 1000 and would use that to scan a
document to save and attach as a text file -- this is quite accessible. I
also have an HP multi-function printer/scanner/copier with dedicated
software that will allow me to take a picture of a document or attempt to
scan as text. I have no idea how accessible a document scanned as text via
this HP software will be since I prefer to use Kurzweil for this. But I
suppose it's possible that the HP scanning software would produce reasonably
  accessible text files.

Of course, I'm answering this as somebody who is totally blind and depends
on screen reading software to get anything meaningful from computer data.
If you're scanning documents and sending them to persons that at least have
reasonably functional sight there's probably no issue. And, if you were to
send a photocopy image to somebody who has Kurzweil he/she could always
run the attachment through the KESI Virtual Printer themselves to get a text
rendering of the letter. I don't know if Open Book has a similar feature; a
capability to have the Open Book Optical Character Recognition software
serve as a printer to convert images into text.
