Re: [Blind-Computing] My struggles with Mcafee are over;

2011-06-02 Thread crystallogic
I've never had many real accessibility issues with mcafee but the
product is a piece of flotsam. A lot of corporations use it for some
reason; it's actually much pricier than most other AV packages and yet
it doesn't work all that well. I got a trojan on my work computer and
it detected the dropper as it was doing its nefarious work and yet
wasn't able to stop it from throwing its payload on the machine, and
then detected said payload every bootup and claimed to remove it when
it wasn't actually doing a thing. People claim it gives false
positives all the time. They've always seemed to have a bad reputation
among the anti-virus experts going back to the 90s. I'd stay away.

I'm currently using avira and it's quite nice, although I can't read
the notifications, which is an annoyance that may yet encourage me to
try something else.

Dan,
Can you comment on how accessible the current version of Avast is with
screen readers?

How easy is it to go into the various preferences? I used to use Avast 4
and I heard that the earlier versions of 5 were not accessible. I did not
wish to wait until the company added accessibility into their products and
so I uninstalled it and, for a while, switched to AVG. Shortly after this
Avast claimed to have accessibility into the current versions but I've never
had a chance to really see what was added or changed. I would love a
detailed analysis of what's been done as well as the strengths and
weaknesses of Avast regarding screen reader accessibility if you have the
time and energy to offer comments.

What I have to say here is not an advertisement in any way for anything; it
is my experience with Mcafee. Three days ago I uninstalled Mcafee and
installed avast. Ever sense then, my machine has ran much faster, problem
free, and has been a pleasure to use. I should have done this years ago; I
can't speak for anyone but me but it has made a huge difference.

I had the same problem years ago. I now use Microsoft's MSE
and it works fantastic!
