Re: [Blind-Computing] muting jaws
Hi Yvonne, Muting Jaws as you are speaking of,does not appear to me to have any benefit. If you mute jaws, the clock is still running, and your 40-minute mode will expire whether Jaws is talking or not. Why not keep Jaws from loading at start-up, and use NVDA, and then use your hotkey to bring Jaws in later when you need it. Re: [Blind-Computing] muting jaws
You can either go into ms config and tell jaws not to start up. You can also go into setting with insert j if your running from sys tray or alt on the jaws window if not. Go into settings then basic. Just uncheck where it says to start jaws automatically. -Original Message- From: blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Yvonne Oliver Sent: Monday, March 14, 2011 1:18 PM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] muting jaws Hello rick That sounds worth trying but how do I do this Yvonne -Original Message- From: blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Rick Justice Sent: 14 March 2011 09:16 To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] muting jaws Hi Yvonne, Muting Jaws as you are speaking of,does not appear to me to have any benefit. Re: [Blind-Computing] muting jaws
Hi Yvonne, Locate the proper Jaws shortcut on your desktop Press Alt + Enter to open the shortcut properties. Tab to the shortcut/hotkey field, and press the letter J Now, tab until you come to the apply button, and spacebar that. Finally, Tab to the shortcut/hotkey field again, and make sure it reads as follows: Control + Alt + J and tab to the okay button, spacebar it, and you are done. Now when you need to start Jaws, you can with this key combination. Re: [Blind-Computing] muting jaws
Hi G.Braille; The steps you have posted are correct but, you have to have NVDA Jaws running at the same time to do this. I tried the sleep mode thing on my computer let me tell you, it was a major pain! You have both programs yakking at you at the same time. The biggest pain is that you still have to use the NVDA pass through keystroke to get to the Jaws configuration manager. Personally what I do is, if I am going to run NVDA is unload Jaws first then, start NVDA but, there are times I have had to start NVDA while Jaws is also running and, that is where it's nice to know the pass through keystroke for NVDA, to get Jaws shut down while NVDA is running. I have used the sleep mode option in the past with other self voicing programs but, I don't like using it with NBDA. This is my personal preference and I am by no means suggesting that my way, is the way others should do this. After trying the sleep mode with NVDA, I was ready for a snooze as well, on Doctor Phil's couch!! LOL Take care. If you want to use Jaws again, press Insert + Q, to shut down NVDA. Then invoke whatever your shortcut keystroke is for starting Jaws. This is what I do on a XP computer, hopefully it will work the same way with Windows7. Hope this helps. Take care. And if it doesn't then you will have lots of problems because even though Jaws is silent you still have the competing keyboard commands ... so in a word NO! I want to combine jaws with n v d a Reason is there are occasions when something I do may take longer than 40 minutes For that reason I would like jaws to start then be able to mute jaws so that only n v d a is sounding. And of course be able to un mute jaws if what I am doing leaves enough time before the 40 minute deadline is up Can someone tell me if this can be done and how to do it?
