[Blind-Computing] problem with USB devices

2011-05-26 Thread Desiree Oudinot
Hi all,
I just bought a USB extender cable. The USB ports on this computer I
just bought are all located on the back of the computer, and they're
hard to reach as my computer is set up, so I ordered an extender as
well as a USB hub, which I'm still waiting for to arrive. Anyway, the
problem is this: upon plugging the extender into the back of the
computer, I cannot get any devices that I plug into it to recognize.
I've tried both my external hard drives and my headset to no avail. A
message flashes saying that the device installation has failed or
something like that. I had no idea an extender cable could have
drivers of its own to cause this sort of problem. So, is there
anything I can do to fix this? I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium.
Thank you for any help you can give me, I'm hoping to get this fixed
before the hub arrives.

Hi Desiree,

If the extender cable is too long, you may find that the power generated by
the USB port is not strong enough to travel along the length of the cable to
the device.

I'm afraid that you may have to get a powered hub, or powered device to plug
into that cable, otherwise the cable on it's own will not have enough power
to power what ever device you plug into it.

I'm not exactly sure what you can do to fix this problem except to say that
you will have to increase the power coming out of your USB port, or nothing
will happen.

I thought it might be like a WI-Fi connection, where you can connect
repeaters to the network, thereby extending the reach of the Wi-Fi area, but
again, I'm not sure what you will need to fix this problem.

Sorry about that.

Hi,
OK that makes sense. So a USB hub will not provide that power? I guess
that was a dumb question since I'll be plugging probably 4 or so
devices into the hub. Maybe I'll try to figure out a way to maneuver
the way my computer is set up so I can have easier access to the
ports. Thanks for your help.

The maximum USB length is 3 meters or around 10 feet. This includes
both the extender and the device cable. If you have any devices that
might draw significant power, I would recommend a powered USB hub as well.

Hi Desiree,

Yeah some extender cables need to be installed before they're able to
function properly. I would plug the extender and wait for the new device
ditection prompt to pop up then would follow the prompts. They are very
easy to be installed as Windows would recognize their drivers
automatically...

Hope that helps
