1. Yes.
2. Depending upon your computer, the size of the space available on the
drive will be shown on the same line as the drive letter, or you will have
to go into windows explorer to determine the capacity of the thumb drive.

Hi all.
I have two questions.

First, is a flash drive and a thumb drive the same thing?

Second, how can I determine the size of the flash/thumb drive?

Thanks for any help.

Yes, a flash drive is the same thing as a thumb drive. To determine the
size of a flash drive, plug it into a USB port on your computer and focus on
it. Then select the Properties dialog from the context menu, and using the
JAWS cursor on the General tab, scroll down from the top to read the
capacity of the drive.

Hi,
Yes. They are the same thing. You should be able to press alt enter on the
drive when in windows explorer to get the size of the drive, along with a lot
of other helpful info.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Thumb drives

2012-03-13 Thread dgcnc

There's really very little you need to know about thumb drives.

I am assuming that you may be a person who has never plugged anything into
those USB connectors on your computer. You just push straight in. If it does
not feel like it will go in, flip it over. There is only one direction that
will fit. Pay attention to any ridge or marking on the drive to say top or
bottom once you figure it out or label it in your chosen method. If you have
questions about how to do that, ask me off list.

When you then hear a sound from the computer saying it has detected the
drive, listen to see what letter the computer assigns that drive. It will
say something like removable storage device D or E or something. This is
important because it tells you where to save your files and your computer
will be different from mine since I don't know the configuration of your
computer.

Here this gets just a little vague because I don't know your operating
system or program you plan to use. But, basically, use your word processor
or other program, begin saving your file, and when you go to where to save,
you may have to find Tree View to locate Computer and open it. Once open,
you will most likely see as one of the drives something like removable
storage, or the brand name of your thumb drive, or something that will tell
you which one it is. Open it, once open, press enter, and this will put you
in the list where files and folders would go. Now, Save your file.

Someone else can chime in and say the importance of this next step. I was
taught before you reach up and just unplug the device when you are finished,
that you should Close it to make sure it is finished saving and whatever
else may be happening. On Your desktop, I do this by tabbing to Notification
and then down arrow to something about closing hardware devices. There's
only one thing that is close to what you want. Go down to your thumb drive
denoted as before and press enter on it. The computer will come back with
Safe to remove Mass storage Device or whatever it says to refer to this
drive. Now, you are safe to just pull straight out on the thumb drive, put
the cap back on to protect it, and go on your way.

I remember how scary it was the first time I tried one of these handy little
inventions. This may seem like a lot of information. It isn't as much as it
seems and once you've actually used your new drive a couple times, you will
be quite comfortable! It really is a simple process. But, if you have any
questions, please ask on or offlist. It's important that you feel confident
in your mind that you can do this. I know you can so will help till you do.

As others here have previously said, a thumb drive is just a drive. The only
thing I would add is that when you plug it in to a USB port, you will, or
should, get a set of options. Generally, you're going to want to pick the open
files in windows explorer option when that happens.

Thank you. Every bit of information is greatly appreciated.

I know the computer won't go up in smoke if I hit a wrong key but doing
something new with something I've never seen (I am totally blind and lost my
vision before computers came into common usage) can be a bit scary when
there is no one sighted around.

Thanks for the advice.

Linda,

Do the best you can. If by chance you do something and can't find your file
when you save it, before you despair, take a deep breath, go to your search
box on the start menu and search for that file name. If you have trouble,
ask. I still make mistakes and have to have do-overs (smile). And, often I
go how did I do that? If you don't struggle just a tiny bit, you aren't
learning. Hang in there.

Thank you very much. This makes me feel much better.

What I am trying to do is, after I unzip (and I know how to do this) the
books I have downloaded from BARD, to put them on the thumb drive so I can
remove it from my Win 7-home laptop (using JAWS 13) and plug it (the thumb
drive) into my digital book machine so I can read the book.

Thanks for the help.

In the control panel in the search field, if I typed notification and tabbed
until I heard notification area icons link and then activate the link with
enter I land on an ok button.
I then tab until I hear windows explorer combo box and used my up arrow
until it says show Icons and notifications.
If you would like to verify that it's the safely remove hardware option,
just route jaws to pc and read from the top and it should tell you. After
the fact, just tab to ok and space bar.
Now after the drivers have been installed after inserting your flash drive,
the safely remove hardware Icon should display in the system tray after
doing the above.

Now, I must admit, I just dove into the deep end of this thread, so I am
only assuming what is being talked about. Smile.

Here again a thumb drive is pretty much the same as any other drive other
than the fact they have much less storage capacity. So far as using them is
