[BlindHandyMan] interstate highway numbering
Dear List Members: If you are in Atlanta Georgia and are trying to get to down-town Atlanta, I would suggest that you not try I285 to get there, as memory tells me that I285 is a beltway around the city. The odd numbered three numbered highways may be spoke type highways in other cities, but not in Atlanta. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Plug in alarms
Hailley, I would want a alarm notice to tell me if the power was off for the house.. I have an alarm which is on my battery back up sump pump. however that pump will not run unless the water is a bit high. I know I can move that alarm to pump water lower but would rather not. I am lucky enough to have a large 6500 auto key start generator but I need to be outside to do that. I am thinking if I had a loud alarm in the bedroom that would sound a piercing sound for lack of power. then I could be sometimes minutes ahead of a problem . also what I'd like to do is to set off a pre recorded tape or cd of all sorts of alarm sounds. If you listened to some old or maybe even some newer movies which had sounds like you would hear on a Navy sub , battleship or carrier. .sounds for a General alarm or this is not a drill. so I am a bit out there but it sounds neat. In our house water from rains or fast melting snow is our worst enemy. we have most of the tools for protection and want to add a couple more. the alarm being the foremost.Lee -- It has been justly observed by sages of all lands that although a man may be most happily married and continue in that state with the utmost contentment, it does not necessarily follow that he has therefore been struck stone-blind. -- H. [BlindHandyMan] Some Facts About Auto Darkening Welding Helmets
Hi Some facts you should know before buying an electronic helmet: List of 5 items . Our helmets switch up to 80 times faster than the required standards. Remember that the welding arc is not instantaneous. It starts off as a small spark and builds into the dangerous arc. Our lens will darken long before that dangerous point. . About switching time: How far does your helmet go? Some companies measure how fast their helmet changes from shade 4 to 8 and then tell you their helmet changes in 1/25,000th of a second. That's like a dragster stopping at half track and saying you made a 3 second run! Our helmets darken in 5/10,000th of a second or faster, but remember, we tell you how fast our helmet changes from shade 4 to 13 (or the darkest shade). That means our helmets may at first appear slower but our helmets make it to the finish line! . Does speed really matter? Since you are always protected from UV/IR rays equivalent to a shade 16, even when the lens is light, switching speed doesn't mean much. In reality, your eyes don't even perceive the difference between 1/5,000th and 1/25,000 of a second. . Do faster speeds compromise protection and quality? Faster helmets may choose switching time over better infrared protection. We think that's a dangerous compromise to make just to make a sale. Faster speeds may also mean a lower optical quality. If you can't see your work clearly, it doesn't matter how fast it darkens. . Our helmets provide as much as 1563% more protection against harmful UV/Infrared radiation than other brands. Infrared light is invisible and can be very dangerous. In time, unprotected exposure to it can cause cataracts and blindness. With our lens over your eyes, you are protected from infrared at all times, even when the lens is light because the UV/Infrared filter is permanent. It is the purple color you see on the outside of the lens. Ultraviolet light is what causes flash burn of the cornea and welder's sunburn like you get on your neck. With our UV/IR filters you are always protected from UV/IR rays to a shade 16 whether the lens is light or dark. That is more protection than most lenses you'll ever use, plus you get the bonus of seeing the visible portion of the light spectrum as light as a shade 9 or as dark as 13. Re: [BlindHandyMan] lubricating chokes
Geof, this choke I am referring to on the newer generator is first, in a weird location. One has to reach behind and to the left of the generator and instead of this being an external operation, the choke is like a very small rounded pipe with a loop on the end in which to stick a finger or thum . this loop allows the operator to push in or pull out the choke..Maybe it was designed to be a stiffer operation of moving this choke , but being a bit parynoid and knowing the chocke seems to be a lightweight metal I want to lube it so it can slide and out a lot easier.. my previous generator just had an external lever which you moved left or right and it was right in the front. the way this works is , when cold you reach back behind the left end of the generator and pull out the choke, while with the right hand turning the key to start. once it begins running then slowly slide the choke back in. a really nice set up.Lee -- It has been justly observed by sages of all lands that although a man may be most happily married and continue in that state with the utmost contentment, it does not necessarily follow that he has therefore been struck stone-blind. -- H. [BlindHandyMan] Tree Trimming
I am $70 poorer today but at least my trees growing over the top of my house and I have a 2 story and over the top of my patio cover as well all in the backyard where this tree was providing alittle bridge for some pesky acrobatic ants cousins to the carpenter ants this is not a joke..were coming into my upstairs bathroom dead..according to the pest control company last year who advised me to give them $300 to rid me of these pests and for one year did not only when it was winter did they disappear..so when the time came again I was asked if I wanted to renew my contract and I said no since the problem was still occuring. I was then told..if I cut back my tree it would prevent them from gaining access into the house! Well let me tell you it took much much effort on my part not to give this guy a piece of my mind!! The very company who a year ago took $300 to rid me of them and now tells me to cut the tree back! Well thanks to my gardener and a product called..Pruneing Seal which is found at Ace Hardware in either a spray or a paint it on seals the cut limbs from ever growing back.. It cost $5.96 and doesn't take much..a friend of mine had done it to his trees 4 years ago and the tree limbs have never grown back. Re: [BlindHandyMan] the art of wood splitting
That is what I have always done. I think you are suppose to split wood with the grain. It has always worked well for me.I like to use a wage along with a short handled hammer. works for me.. Okay, the first time my jaws read the subject line to this thread, I thought it said, lubricating jokes. not chokes. Talk to your Wild Life and Game department in your state. I did and they told me about a guy in Montana That goes with a sighted guide hunting. Also talk to the NRA they might help here too. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Chainsaw
First make sure you have the chain going the right direction. I do this by lightly running my thumb over the chain to make sure the chain cutting blade on the top of the bar is going away from me. Tighten the tension enough to hold the blade in place and turn the chain by hand and this will set the chain in the socket and hold it in place in the bar groove. Sure hope this is of some help and I am making my self clear. For before I started to use this method, I was about to throw the chainsaw in the garbage. smile RJ - Original Message - From: Jewel Blanch [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Sent: Sunday, October 01, 2006 1:11 AM Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Chainsaw I am, rapidly, going around the bend in my fruitless attempts to get the chain to fit and remain in the bar groove. I have changed the chain before successfully, but how I did it beats me! I drop the chain over the flywheel, and then fit the bar underneath. What is the trick to getting the chain into the part of the groove that is under the flywheel. The only tool I have when doing this maddening job is a combination socket spanner/screwdriver. Any tips and tricks that I can use and thus, save my tattered nerves from complete destruction?
