[BlindHandyMan] How to Adjust or Replace Garage Door Springs.

2006-12-08 Thread Ray Boyce
Hi
How do you adjust or replace garage door springs?

There are two different styles of garage door springs used on sectional
doors... TORSION and SIDE-MOUNTED.

Torsion springs are mounted on a stationary metal shaft located above and
parallel to the top of the garage door frame. They are attached on one end
to
a stationary plate located above the center of the door frame. The springs
extend along the shaft, and work by twisting as the garage door closes by
means
of cables attached to each side of the lowest garage door panel. This
tension makes it easier to lift the garage door from its closed position.

Side mounted springs are long heavy springs mounted on each side of the
upper garage door track. Through the use of pulleys, they perform the same
function
as the torsion springs... they come under tension when the garage door is
closed to make lifting the door easier.

IMPORTANT TIP: Always replace garage door springs as a set! This may not be
obvious to a novice, but it makes sense. If one spring has broken, can the
other
spring's demise be far behind? Add that little bit of common sense to the
fact that the strength of a spring decreases with time and use. The use of a
new spring with an old spring can cause an imbalance in the door that cannot
be corrected for through adjustment.

Spring Replacement and Adjustment Techniques...

For Side Mounted Springs Only...

You must release the tension on the garage door springs before attempting
adjustment or replacement. This is accomplished by opening the garage door
as
fully as possible until it hits the stop bolt on the track. Hold the garage
door in this position by attaching a C-clamp to the track at a point below
the lowest door roller (wheel).

This is true even if you have a garage door opener. Just because the door is
open does not mean that the spring tension is fully released. Use the
emergency
release rope to disconnect the opener from the door and push the door up as
far as you can without damaging the opener. Then clamp as described above.

If there are safety cables installed, they must be disconnected and removed
from the springs. The old spring is attached at two points. One end is a
fixed
attachment to the garage door track or wood frame. The other end is attached
to a pulley through which the garage door cable is threaded. Simply
disconnect
these two attachments and reattach the new spring in the same way. Be sure
not to twist the garage door cable when reattaching the pulley.

While the pulley is disconnected from the spring, give it a quick hard look.
If it appears that the pulley bearings are very sloppy and have lots of
wobble,
replace the pulleys. There is no repair other than replacement. The door
will function more smoothly and save you additional work later. And you
might
as well check the stationary pulleys, too, while you are at it! Makes sense,
right?

Once all attachments are completed, test the door once for proper function
before reattaching the safety cables. You may find that the new springs may
be
too "lively" and the door may not close all the way. If that is the case,
you will have to look at the way the bare end of the garage door cable is
attached
to the garage door track, and loosen an inch or two. This end may be simply
looped through the holes in the track, or it could be attached by means of
a special clip and an S-hook. In either case adjust both sides equally
either by shortening the cable or by repositioning the S-hook in a different
hole
in the track. The springs should visually be in about the same position when
extended fully (door in down position).

Of course, if you do not have enough tension in the springs, and want to
make manual opening of the door easier, you may adjust the garage door cable
into
a tighter position also.

For Torsion Springs Only...

(NOTE: Some modern torsion springs can be adjusted with a special adapter
and an electric drill. I would suggest visiting the manufacturer's website
concerning
the appropriate adjustment method. The article below refers to typical
manual adjustment.)

Adjustment to torsion springs can be dangerous because they must be adjusted
with the door down and the spring under tension.

Torsion springs must be adjusted with the door in the down position. Be
sure to have all your tools inside before closing the door unless you have
an alternate
access door to the garage!

1) Secure the door in place by putting a C-clamp on the garage door track
under the bottom-most door roller. As you adjust the spring more tightly,
there
is the chance that the door may begin to rise if you overtighten it... a
dangerous possibility!

2) The moveable end of each spring is attached to an adjustment collar.
There is a set screw in the adjustment collar that locks the spring in a
position
of tension on the center shaft. The adjustment collar also has a series of
holes around its perimeter. You will need to insert a metal rod into one

Aloha,
I have decided that after trying everything and anything that
everyone suggested to stop the whistle in my kitchen faucet, that I
have had it and am buying a new one. I would like advice as to what I
might buy that is likely to last just about forever. A couple of
friends have suggested a Delta and another one said a Kohler. We do
not have hard water. Thoughts? Suggestions? Types never to buy?

Re: [BlindHandyMan] SmartTools Level

2006-12-08 Thread Edward Przybylek
Hi Tom,

I did get your first message and the information is greatly
appreciated. I'm told there is a braille protractor that can be
purchased from one of the accessible equipment dealers. I think I'm
going to order one and see if it can be rigged with the audible level
to give anguler measurements. I'll keep you informed. First,
though, I have to receive my SmartTools audible level Christmas gift
from my family.

Take care,
Ed Przybylek

2006-12-08 Thread Lenny McHugh
I have a plumber friend who has always recommended Moen.
http://www.moen.com
I have these in both kitchen and bath.
My kitchen one is quite unique it is called a high riser. The spout pulls up
about 8inches so large pots and buckets can fit under. The head can change
from normal flow to a spray for rinsing. The single lever handle sits to the
right of the fixture where the sprayer hole is in the sink.

Aloha,
Free Matter isn't supposed to go fourth class. It is supposed to go
first class just like any other package.

The flat rate boxes go just like Priority mail. I often use a flat
rate or Priority Mail box and put a Free Matter label on it instead
of postage. My post person is the one that told me I could do this.

[BlindHandyMan] Vents for the under side of your house

2006-12-08 Thread Steve & Shannon
We live in SC. I have heard different opinions on whether or not you are
suppose to close the vents or leave the vents to the under side of your
house open in the winter. The reason for closing the vents is to keep the
cold air out and this keeps pipes from freezing. Also I have heard you are
suppose to leave them open so the under side of your house can get fresh
air. What is every one's opinion on this?

[BlindHandyMan] Mary's gingerbread housebuilding 101

2006-12-08 Thread Carla Jo
Below is my friend Mary's story of her building experience. I thought those
of you who met her in Houston would enjoy reading it.
cj
I've seen many holiday magazine spreads showing all of the wonderful
easy ways to make a gingerbread house from scratch, and thought it would
be a great bonding experience for me and my girls. They of course, can't
do anything without at least one friend each tied to their hip, so we
included some of their friends. We went to the store and bought a
couple of boxes of gingerbread mix, every kind of candy that could
possibly be used (or eaten during the construction process), frosting
and waffle cones for Christmas trees. After having found the easiest
recipe, we're ready to begin, and so we read the directions. We're
already backwards in the plan, since the cut-out pieces are supposed to
dry for several days after baking, but I have 5 teenage girls staring at
me, expecting the MOM to figure out how to make it happen, like with
some magic fairy dust or some crap like that. So we cut out the pieces,
baked the absolute hell out of them and while they cooled, we crushed
some colored life savers and baked them just enough to melt them (for
windows). We're ready to assemble!!! The windows are cut and the glue
(frosting) is being spread when "SNAP" too much pressure and one wall
pops in half. So help me, in the name of all things holy, I am
determined to get this damn thing together, so we glue with frosting the
wall back together and set aside to dry. Assembling the rest of the
house without a wall is a stupid idea, but like I said, MOM can make
anything happen so we forge ahead. Three walls kind of spread apart
with the weight of the roof, but Hey, I'm a banker not a construction
worker, for crying out loud! While I'm trying to figure out how to
salvage this love shack, I put all the girls on the task of creating a
forest of Christmas trees. Turn the waffle cone upside down, cover with
white or green frosting, either by spreading or using a pastry tip, and
go from there. Several of the trees were striped with frosting garland,
sprinkled with sugar glitter, beautiful trees that were horribly out of
place with the outhouse looking heap of burnt dough in the middle.
Fortunately, the girls are loosing interest (I think this is when the
boys started knocking on the front door), so I clean up and go to bed.
Evidently during the night the elves and the housemaker get to work, and
the wall that dried is mysteriously in place the next morning. Of
course, the spreading of the walls has jacked up the entire house, so
candy rats could easily run right in. I saw nicer homes in the Katrina
aftermath, but the girls were so proud of themselves, and yes, they
could see the joke of a job that was done, but they had so much fun
making it that they didn't care. The house still smells like
gingerbread, and as soon as I can get both girls out of the house at the
same time, I'm going to bring in a demolition crew to clean it up. Or I
could save it for next year and get Ty Pennington to do an Extreme
Makeover Gingerbread House Edition. I've learned a lot, and we'll do
this again, I'm sure. Thank God I have a year to recover.
Mary

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Vents for the under side of your house

2006-12-08 Thread pythonden21
Not sure what part of the country anybody is in or what type of house exactly
is being spoken of, but as someone who lives in New England and knows about
pipes in winter, you most definately DO NOT want to leave them exposed if the
temps fall below freezing if temps falll below freezing. Even a hot water
pipe might be fine until the power fails an then expansion of freezing water
would burst the pipes.

So if we're talkng about letting air into a cellar, most definately close the
vents if there is a remote chance of the temperatures going below freezing.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Vents for the under side of your house

2006-12-08 Thread Tom Huhn
When I lived in Oregon most of the houses there are built with a crawl space
under the house and there are vents around the foundation most of which have a
plastic door that you can open or close. There they would close the doors in
winter and you also could get these foam insulated plugs that fit in the vent
cavity for added protection. The only reason for fresh air in the crawl space
would be if there was combustion air for a furnnace or water heater etc.being
drawn from the crawl space crawl space

2006-12-08 Thread Max Robinson
You have already received lots of advice to close them in the winter and
open in the summer. A very good modern solution is the thermostatically
controlled vent. You can get them, as they say, at your local home
improvement store. They have a couple of advantages, you don't have to
remember to open or close them and if you get a sudden warm spell in the
winter, as is likely to happen in South Carolina, they will open and then
close again when the weather turns cold.

[BlindHandyMan] Safety Tips when Decorating This Year

2006-12-08 Thread Ray Boyce
Hi
Use the following safety tips when decorating this year:

Trees and Decorations:

When purchasing an artificial tree, look for the label "Fire Resistant."
Although this label does not mean the tree won't catch fire, it does
indicate the tree is more resistant to burning.

When purchasing a live tree, check for freshness. A fresh tree is green,
needles are hard to pull from branches and do not break when bent
between your fingers. The bottom of a fresh tree is sticky with resin,
and when tapped on the ground, the tree should not lose many needles.

When setting up a tree at home, place it away from fireplaces and
radiators. Because heated rooms dry out live trees rapidly, be sure to
keep the stand filled with water. Place the tree out of the way of
traffic, and do not block doorways.

Use only non-combustible or flame-resistant materials to trim a tree.
Choose tinsel or artificial icicles of plastic or nonleaded metals.
Leaded materials are hazardous if ingested by children.

In homes with small children, take special care to avoid sharp or
breakable decorations, keep trimmings with small removable parts out of
the reach of children who could swallow or inhale small pieces, and
avoid trimmings that resemble candy or food that may tempt a child to
eat them.

To avoid eye and skin irritation, wear gloves when decorating with spun
glass "angel hair."

To avoid lung irritation, follow container directions carefully while
decorating with artificial snow sprays.

Lights:

Indoors or outside, use only lights that have been tested for safety by
a nationally-recognized testing laboratory, such as UL or ETL/ITSNA. Use
only newer lights that have thicker wiring and are required to have
safety fuses to prevent the wires from overheating.

Check each set of lights, new or old, for broken or cracked sockets,
frayed or bare wires, or loose connections. Throw out damaged sets.

If using an extension cord, make sure it is rated for the intended use.

Never use electric lights on a metallic tree. The tree can become
charged with electricity from faulty lights, and a person touching a
branch could be electrocuted.

When using lights outdoors, check labels to be sure they have been
certified for outdoor use and plug them into only ground-fault circuit
interrupter (GFCI) protected receptacles.

Turn off all holiday lights when you go to bed or leave the house. The
lights could short out and start a fire.

Candles:

Keep burning candles within sight.

Keep lighted candles away from items that can burn easily, such as
trees, other evergreens, decorations, curtains and furniture.

Always use non-flammable holders and keep away from children and pets.

Extinguish all candles before you go to bed or leave the house.

Fireplaces:

Use care with "fire salts," which produce colored flames when thrown on
wood fires. They contain heavy metals that, if eaten, can cause intense
gastrointestinal irritation and vomiting. Keep them away from children.

Do not burn wrapping papers in the fireplace. Wrappings can ignite
suddenly and burn intensely, resulting in a flash fire.

Place a screen around your fireplace to prevent sparks from igniting
nearby flammable materials.

[BlindHandyMan] Some Points to Consider When Selecting a Replacement Window

2006-12-08 Thread Ray Boyce
Hi
Why would you want replacement windows?

There are many reasons why people decide to shop for replacement windows for
their homes. Most of them are based on either comfort, or cost. If the
windows
currently in your home are drafty, or cold, then you'll probably want to
consider replacing them. If your home gets very hot during the summer, then
that's
another reason. If you're having trouble keeping up with the rising cost of
heating and/or cooling your home, then that, too, creates a need for you to
replace your windows.

They say "Dreams are the windows of the soul". Well, if your windows are
giving you nightmares, then perhaps your soul is trying to tell you to go
shopping
for replacement windows. With the wide selection available these days, we're
sure you can solve your woes with some beautiful windows that'll not only
make your home more attractive, but will make it more comfortable and less
costly, too.

What are replacement windows?

There are several basic types of replacement windows, with each style having
its own special purpose. Pretty well all windows these days are double-pane.
That means that there are two panes of glass with an airspace between them.
These days, they're even adding insulating gas instead of air between the
panes,
to reduce heat loss. Double-pane windows are much more energy efficient than
their predecessor, the single-pane window. However, there are still some
uses
for single-pane windows - wherever warmth isn't a factor, like in sheds or
barns or other outer buildings. But with the focus on energy efficiency
these
days, there's not a lot of call for them in homes.

Another old standard that's slowly making its way out is clear glass. With
technology advancing as fast as it is these days, glass is changing - not
the
actual makeup of the glass, but what they put on it and between it. The
purpose of the replacement window industry is to create a window that's
functional,
cost-effective, energy efficient, and looks good, too. That's a tall order,
but they're doing a great job of it.

What are replacement windows made of?

There are four basic materials used for making the framework of replacement
windows today. The oldest source of window frames is wood. Wood will always
be the best insulator, but it's the disadvantages that've led to the
industry's pursuit of a higher-quality, more functional material. The first
material
to be added to a window frame was vinyl. Vinyl is now added to wood, in a
composite material called Fibrex, that increases the strength and endurance
of
the window frame. It also makes windows more customizable.

Aluminum has been a common material used in windows for some time. It, too,
is easily customizable, but it's not a very good insulator. How many times
have
you seen mildew around the frame of an aluminum window? That's because it
causes condensation and, unless you wipe it up regularly (which is a pain),
you'll
have problems. That's why aluminum windows are slowly becoming a thing of
the past.

Some replacement windows are made of fiberglass, but this isn't a very
popular choice because it's quite expensive.

Energy efficiency is a major goal of replacement windows

With the high cost of utility bills these days, and the environmentalists
lobbying for ways to
save energy,
the replacement window industry has stepped up to the plate and produced
many ways to please everybody involved. Energy-efficient windows are
becoming the
norm today and the methods of accomplishing this are quite interesting.

If you stand by your window, it's easy to understand why changes are being
sought. In the summer, it's hot; in the winter, it's cold. So there's a
drive
to build a wall between you and the outdoors - a wall you can still see
through. And that's what technology has created. They've found a way to keep
your
house comfortable, no matter what the season or climate.

The next innovation was to cover the window with a clear coating that would
improve heat loss without decreasing light. That improvement came in the
form
of low-emissivity (Low-E) glass. It improved heat loss by 40%-70%. But
people wanted still more.

So heat-absorbing glass was developed. This glass absorbs up to 45% of
