[BlindHandyMan] Whiny s10

2007-03-04 Thread Robert J. Moore
I forgot now who posted about their whiny s10

How is it going with tracking down the noise?
Did you ever remove the belt to see if that stopped the noise? I am sure you
know this but you can not run it too long this way but you will know almost
immediatlly if the noise is gone or not.
That is a critical first step.
One component that I forgot to mention in my last post on this topic was the
alternator. Although I don't think that is the problem.

Regards Robert

[BlindHandyMan] Finishing Caractristics Of Common Capbinet Woods

2007-03-04 Thread Ray Boyce
Hi All
Finishing Characteristics of Common Cabinet Wood

Alder

Hardwood
Closed-grained
Color: light tan
Finishing characteristics: Alder accepts stain well, and is often used to
imitate more expensive woods. Nicknamed "poor man's birch," it resembles
birch
when given a clear finish. When stained dark, it will look like walnut to
the casual observer. A lot of unfinished furniture is made from alder. Since
alder is not well known by the general public, it is often simply called
"hardwood" by the furniture manufacturer. It is an easy wood to finish;
practically
any type of finish can be used on it. To bring out the nature color, use a
clear, penetrating oil. For a lighter finish apply lacquer or waterbased
varnish.
Alder also looks good with a dark stain and satin varnish.

Ash

Hardwood
Open-grained, ring-porous
Color: Light tan
Finishing characteristics: Ash is it is very similar to oak, but it doesn't
stain as well, so it is often left unstained. It looks good with a clear
finish
or a light-colored stain. Clear penetrating oil or a thin coat of satin
varnish makes a good top coat. The large pores are hard to fill completely
so it
is usually best to leave them unfilled to show the natural texture of the
ring-porous grain.

Birch

Hardwood
Closed-grained
Color: Heartwood reddish brown; sapwood almond colored
Finishing characteristics: Birch stains very well. It call be stained to
match many other types of wood. White birch is cut from sapwood. When you
want
a very light finish white birch works well.
Birch has a very subtle grain pattern. This makes it accept stain evenly,
resulting in a uniform color without a pronounced grain pattern.
Birch looks good with practically any combination of stain and top coat. You
can leave it natural or use a pastel stain for a light colored finish or
stain
it with a dark stain to simulate cherry, walnut or mahogany. Because of its
smooth, hard surface, it is a good choice for a penetrating oil finish.
Birch
accepts shellac and varnish well. No filling is needed to achieve a smooth
surface.

Cedar; Red, Eastern

Softwood
Closed-grained
Color: Red
Finishing characteristics: Red cedar has a strong, pleasant aroma that
repels moths, so it has been traditionally used for chests that store
textiles. The
interior of a cedar chest should be left unfinished to allow the aroma to
escape from the wood. The exterior of a cedar chest can be finished using
most
finishing products, but it is usually not stained. Because of the natural
beauty of the wood, a clear gloss finish is the traditional choice for
cedar.

Cherry

Hardwood
Closed-grained
Color: Reddish brown
Finishing characteristics: Cherry has a beautiful grain pattern and a fine
texture For these reasons, a clear penetrating oil finish is a good choice.
Several
coats of penetrating finish will bring out the natural color and grain and
can be buffed to a beautiful, soft luster. Cherry also finishes well with
other
products. It stains well with medium-to-dark stains and can be given a
high-gloss finish without filling.

Fir

Softwood
Closed-grained
Color: Reddish tan
Finishing characteristics: Fir is a difficult wood to finish well. Its
summer wood is much denser than the spring wood. This makes it difficult to
sand
to a smooth, flat surface, because the softer parts of the grain sand away
faster leaving the summer wood raised slightly above the rest of the
surface.
It is also difficult to get an even color when staining. The spring wood
absorbs a lot of stain, while the summer wood hardly absorbs any. This leads
to
a very pronounced grain pattern when dark stain is used.
One of the best finishes for fir is either a pastel or pickled finish. (See
Chapter 11.) With these finishes, the characteristics listed above can be
used
to advantage. For a pickled finish, wire-brush the wood to further
accentuate the grain, and then apply a pastel stain. Use satin varnish as
the top coat.
If you want to stain fir a dark color, treat the wood with wood conditioner
first to help even out the color.

Mahogany

Hardwood
Open-grained, diffuse-porous
Color: Reddish brown
Finishing characteristics: Mahogany is one of the finest cabinetmaking
woods. There are two varieties of mahogany: African and Honduran. African
and Honduran
mahogany are similar in appearance and have the same finishing
characteristics. Mahogany finishes very well. It is open- grained, but its
pores are small,
so they can be filled well with paste wood filler. It has a beautiful grain
that is enhanced by reflective characteristics that change as the viewing
angle
changes. The traditional finish for mahogany is designed to enhance these
reflective qualities.
Stain the wood with ,medium-dark stain. Fill the grain with paste wood
filler. Use colored filler that matches the stain. Apply four thin coats of
rubbing
varnish. Wet-sand the finish with 600- grit sandpaper, and then rub it out
with rubbing compound.
Lacquer and shellac are al

[BlindHandyMan] wiring speakers in my pickup

2007-03-04 Thread Robert J. Moore
Hi
I just baught a new pair of speakers for my pick up. The wires on the pickup
have a factory connecter and the new speakers came with leads that slide
onto two seprat tabs the wider one is the positive and the narrower one is
the negative. They happen to be 4 by 10, three ways. that mount on the back
corner of the cab.
My question is how can I tell which of the wires are wich on the truck and
with a standerd factory Delco radio does it matter which way they are wired?
I need to cut the factory connecter off and splice on the new wires that
came with the speakers.
I am assuming that I will get sound either way that I hook it up but I don't
know if over time it will do harm to either the speakers or the radio.
If it is of any help I am talking about the rear speakers in my89 S10.

I have cranked this grill down so low as to do Dutch oven

have also turned it up high enough to do a quick steak or

It took a bit of getting use to but now I have made friends

Dear Don and list members:
I can not imagine a gas grill without a control valve
which regulates the temperature. If the grills have a
regulating valve, but the heat remains too intense, I would
contact the manufacturer or the dealer where it was
purchased, to discus a repair.
Our Sears grill, which is ten or fifteen years old, has
a whole in the bottom where grease or other juices drip out,
and there is a wire holder which holds a jar or can which
catch the material during cooking. It is easy to empty this
container between cook-outs.

I agree that charcoal still has the best flavor and the
next grill I buy will have that as an option, if not the
only method of cooking.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Does your gas grill burn to hot?

2007-03-04 Thread Don
Last March, on a nice sunny day I did the same thing. Thought it would be
nice to have a nice brand new shiny gas grill. Wrong, bad choice. I don't
like it much. Great for cooking a steak, are something that needs to be
cooked really quick. But a damned high priced steak cooker. Give me charcoal
any day. the thing is a pain too clean, And it drips grease. I am really

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Does your gas grill burn to hot?

Last year I bought a new stainless steel gas grill for the back yard. Well
I was disappointed with it because it burned to damn hot. It was fine for
steaks and burgers, but to hot for chicken. Yesterday, I was at a family
owned hardware store that was having a 50 percent going out of business
sale. Probably due to Home Depot that opened last year. Anyway, I ask if
there was such a regulator for a gas grill that I could regulate the amount
of gas being fed into the burners, and I was told such a beast did exist,
but they had no more in stock. So, while going to the store with my wife,
she noticed a True Value store, so we stop and checked them out for the
regulator. Well, this damn regulator was $29. and I decided I'd look else
where to see if I could get it cheaper.
Anyway on the regulator itself, there is a valve you can turn to open it up
more, or turn to lower the amount of gas flowing into the gas burners. So
  if
you have a grill that burns to damn hot, here's your solution. Hope this
wasn't off topic for the list.

[BlindHandyMan] Castor Questions and Answers

2007-03-04 Thread Ray Boyce
Hi All
Question: What type of wheel do I use for carpet?
Answer: Caster rule of thumb: use a hard wheel on carpet and a soft wheel on
hard floor surfaces. Wheels like Polyurethane, Polyolefin or Nylon will work
well on carpet.
Question: What type of wheel do I use for hardwood floors?
Answer: Caster rule of thumb: use a hard wheel on carpet and a soft wheel on
hard floor surfaces. Wheels like Polyurethane or Rubber will work best on
hardwood
floors. Rubber is the best, however, if you must also roll over carpet, then
we recommend polyurethane which is compatible with both.
Question: What size wheel do I need?
Answer: Caster rule of thumb: The larger the wheel diameter, the easier it
rolls. Choose the largest wheel diameter for your application. If size
doesn't
matter, choose a large wheel.
Question: I'm putting the casters on a storage unit. What type of wheel do I
need?
Answer: Caster Wheels that are left in the same place for long periods of
time with heavy weights may develope a flat spot depending on the wheel
material.
The harder the wheel material the less likely it is to go flat. Very hard
wheels like Phenolic or Steel are recommended for heavy storage
applications.
When designing your application, choose a caster where the entire weight of
the application can be supported by one caster. By doing this, each caster
is only "working" at 25% of it's capacity and flat spots due to storage will
most likely be avoided.
Question: I need casters for my workbench. What do you suggest?
Answer: Our
Total Locking Casters
are excellent for this application. They lock both the swivel and the wheel.
We also recommend these casters for woodworking tools such as table saws,
radial
arm saws, drill presses, etc.
Question: Is "Capacity" for one caster or four casters?
Answer: Our "Capacity" specifications are for a single caster or wheel. If
you are using 4 casters, the total capacity would be 4 times our stated
capacity.
Example: A chair caster with a maximum capacity of 80 lbs would have a
maximum capacity of 400 lbs if 5 were used on a chair.

Doesn't your gas canister have a valve on it that you could use to control

Re: [BlindHandyMan] casters

2007-03-04 Thread R & S Enterprises
Well two thoughts come to mind. If the casters are the style with the metal
mounting plate is relatiave easy to lay it on a table and measure up from the
table to the top surfface of the caster wheel. If the style is such that a
stem is mounted into a hole then I would get a scrap of wood, drill the correct
size of stem hole and insert the caster. Then with the scrap laying on the
bench measure from the scrap to the top of the wheel like was done with the
plate mounting stuyle.. Yes carpet makes things a little difficult at times.

  Hi Listers,
Is there a trick on how to figure out the correct height of casters? I just
brought the TV stand up stairs and have a small problem that I can correct. I
mounted the casters so that 3/4" of the wheel protrudes from the bottom. Well
the drawer that I built in the bottom does not work. It is sunk into the
carpet. I am planning on first putting a 1/4" shim under the wheels, then if
necessary 3/8" and then 1/2" shims until I find one that will work. There must
be an easy way to figure out exactly what measurement I need.
My daughter doesn't care she just wants the stand in her room. I will make
her wait at least 48 hours to make sure that the polyurethane is cured.
