RE: [BlindHandyMan] figuring out how steep a slope of a hill is.

2007-04-29 Thread Michael Baldwin
Use a board and hold it straight and level from the top of the hill, then at
the end of the board measure straight down to the ground.
for every 12 inches in length, a 27 percent grade will drop 3.24 inches.
for every 12 inches in length, the drop will be 1.8 inches for a 15 percent
grade.
I would do this a few places a long your hill just to get an average.

Hi,

I am thinking about getting one of them robotic lawn mowers, but I have some
hills and need to know the percent grade of the slope of the hill. Can
anyone tell me how I could figure this one out?

It needs to be under 15% grade for one and the other choice needs to be
under 27% grade, so if anyone can help me figure this out it would be
appreciated.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Cleaning Paint brushes.

2007-04-29 Thread Brice Mijares
Whenever we buy any kind of paint or finish, I ask what is needed to clean
the brushes. Most of the time they say mineral spirits, or warm soapy
water. I prefer just using paint thinner.

Ah you failed to let us know what you used for a finish. Usually the can
tells what is the proper solvent for cleaning.. Actual should clean up
with mineral spirits. Deft which is a brushing lacquer has to use
 lacquer
thinner. Latex stuff be water based. Shellac requires alcohol. Final
clean up usually should be hot soapy water. Actually in the days
 painting
with my dad and lead based paint we used gasoline or such for brushes and
 hands.

The radio desk is finished. I think it's pretty good for a first
 project.
Anyway, I now have several brushes I used in the finishing process which
 now
appear to be useless because they are stiff with old dried finish. After
applying each coat I tried to clean them with mineral spirits but they
 still
became stiff after drying. Did I do something wrong or are brushes only
good for one use? If that's the case I'll buy the cheapest brushes I can
find. Those little foam pads with wooden handles are 79 cents a piece
 and
are obviously meant for a single use. So what's the secret? I have
 checked
the handyman files site but didn't find anything about cleaning brushes.

suggest using a string. Of course, you would want to keep the string as close

Re: [BlindHandyMan] figuring out how steep a slope of a hill is.

2007-04-29 Thread r yearns
My idea is very similar to others. Using a board of a known length, put a
level on it, with of course one on the ground. Measure the distance to the
ground from the end in the air. Make sure the measurement is taken from the
side touching the ground and not the top of the board. Divide the measurement
by the length of the board. Make sure both numbers are in inches or feet.
Tjhe decimal fraction is the percent of grade. Move the decimal point two
places to the right for correct percent statement.

Interesting things all though not cheap

[BlindHandyMan] Woodworking for the blind.

2007-04-29 Thread Max Robinson
I have signed up for woodworking for the blind and now have my first issue.
I have finished reading the January edition of woodworking magazine and it's
very good. I was especially interested in a report on the saw stop saw.
For those who haven't signed on yet the saw stops in about 2 tents of a
second after the blade contacts human flesh. They did a test with a hot dog
and there was only a little nick in it that if it were in a finger would
only need a bandade. It costs about 120 dollars for replacement parts every
time the saw is stopped in this way, but how much is a finger worth? I wish
they had reported on the wet wood test. They did it but neglected to tell
us of the results. No criticism of you Larry, you can only read what's in
the magazine.

Regards.

Max. K 4 O D S.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Woodworking for the blind.

2007-04-29 Thread woodworkingfortheblind
Wet wood will cause a change in conduction and will be picked by the safety
mechanism and lock the blade. For that reason, before using wet wood, the
machine sensor has to be turned off.

We have the same junk on our ceiling. Since our home is 26 years old,
we were warned that it may contain aspestus. One suggestion was to
cover the whole mess with a hanging ceiling. Haven't done anything
about it yet.

[BlindHandyMan] Brewing

2007-04-29 Thread Keith Christian
Hi Kevin,

My brewing system has evolved over the years. I started by boiling
water and malt extract in the kitchen to brewing outside. I don't see
much of the kitchen any more because of boil overs. But I purchased a
big gas stove and I am now boiling over out side! Actually, it is not
that bad, it is just better being outside drinking a few hand crafted
beers with friends while brewing outside.

My current setup consists of 3 half barrel kegs that I use to mash,
sparge, and boil in. Basically, it is a 3 tear system. The top level
is for hot water for rinsing grain, the middle is the mash tun where you
soak the crushed grain, and the bottom level is the boiler.

It is a very interesting process. I really enjoy making Pale Ales,
Porters, and Stouts. My basic standard beer is a Sierra Nevada clone
with a tun of Cascade and Centennial hops.

Tell me about the types of beers you like to brew and your setup. I
would love to hear about it. I don't know any other blind brewers. It
would be cool to share notes.

Keith
