[BlindHandyMan] deck extension

2008-09-11 Thread chiliblindman
Since it is really slow now, I'll give an update on my
project. I have all my floor supports in place as of yesterday.
All plants affected have been moved except my one grape vine that is
older than I am. The main stem used to be over 3 inches in diameter
before my brother hit it with the lawn mower.
Anyway, the deck joists have been started and an end cap board
to help hold and space them till supported completely. I am putting
them on 16 inch centers. The end cap board will stay to close off
the end.
Before I start the deck boards I need to remove some of my old
deck boards and locate my water and sewer pipes I had placed there
when I added my enclosed porch. I will extend them incase more is
done in the future. One pipe will house a phone, and internet cable
along with new plastic water lines. The water line will have a stop
and waste valve on located in the basement of my house. If hot
water is wanted in the future I can add a small tankless heater.
My 100 amp service line lays on my breezway roof waiting for a
finished wall to be mounted to. That is down the road since I have
to get the roof joists and roof on befor the siding is started on a
wall that is not there yet.
Slow but sure, progress is being made. Sometimes a little
slower than wanted, but that is ok too.
The other day when it was raining I tried to figure up the cost
if I had someone else do it and had to pay them for the material as
well. Labor and material would run over 20 grand easily, that
includes the water and electric work also. If I get it done by next
summer, I'll save about 2 grand a month doing it myself even if
slower than slow.

Have you checked out home depot? We bought some rubber like material there

Rita,

Believe it or not those old fashioned roller shades are back in fashion. You
can spend anywhere from about $8.00 to $90.00 per window depending upon what
you are looking for.
You measure the inside width of your windows to be covered and your big box
store of choice will custom cut them to your specs. If you are handy,
married to somebody who is or can provide a home cooked meal to a starving
bachelor installation appears to require a scratch-all, some kind of
accessible measuring device and a cordless screw driver. Obviously the job
could be done using a traditional screw driver but that might require two
home cooked meals depending on the number of windows to be covered.

Hi,

Hardware stores, building supply stores and sometimes department stores like
K-Mart sell rolls of paper backed plastic usually roughened to appear like
frosted glass. You pull off the paper and press it onto the carefully cleaned
glass. It takes a little care to get it nice and flat and wrinkle free without
bubbles although small bubbles can be removed by pricking with a pin and
pressing the air out from the periphery toward the pinhole.

Rita,
If you really don't care about looks, and don't want light or anything
else visie through, then cover the darned glass with
good old contact paper, now-a-days it's plastic.

You'd probably have to get them pretty clean first, but it can be had in
lots of patterns, and if its slick plastic shouldn't hold much dust.

Does require some carefull cutting and you have to get it on smooth the first
time, but it should last for years.

That should drive the sightlings nuts!

Re: [BlindHandyMan] porch windows

2008-09-11 Thread Dale Leavens
Well come to that you could paint them over but it would be dark.

There are paints though and etching solutions too. I made a barrister's book
case a couple of years ago with glass doors which a daughter and a son made
stencils to fit then etched through the stencil to form a sort of scroll work
imitating the cast iron on the bench.

Light comes through but image behind is distorted by the texture etched into
the glass. the etching solution was purchased at a local craft store.

Rita,

Automotive window tinting is a great idea however, it is a major pain in the
32nd vertebrae to install. You need to keep it extremely wet during the
initial installation process and as it dries you will need to squeegee out
bubbles and wrinkles.
The glass must be extremely and I mean extremely clean before beginning and
the sheets of tint must be cut to the precise dimensions of the glass they
are to cover. If you are hell bent to tint those windows, Email me off list,
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and maybe I can help talk you through that project.

For a short term answer, smear the windows with liquid soap. It will dry
cloudy and give you a little privacy while you determine your options. :) You
could also add a little washable paint for color if you want. this is actually

cloudy and give you a little privacy while you determine your options. :)
You could also add a little washable paint for color if you want. this is
actually something done for kid fun, but i think might be a creative answer
 here.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] deck extension

Lee, the floor joists are all connected by bolts, treated nails and
screws, wood to wood. The main ceiling joists are the same ,wood to wood. The
small ceiling joists will be in hangers and nailed from the backside also.
The floor treated lumber supports are 2x8x12 treated running east and west
fastened to the 4x4x16 posts that are almost 12 feet apart east to west, 6 in
each row. The posts in the rows are 6 feet apart. In the middle of the 12
foot width is a short post at support level.
On top of these supports are 2x8x12s running north and south on 16 inch
centers, these will hold the deck boards running east and west. The boards are
the standard 5 quarter by 6, 12 feet long.
The upper joists are 2x8x12 all around the outside and running east and
west from post to post same as the floor supports. In the middle will be 2x8's
at the 4 foot and 8 foot mark running north and south. Between these will be
2x6's to keep square. Three quarter ply on walking areas around the steps and
my saved lumber for the floor where it will be storage area.
The roof will have 2x12x16's all around the outside to hold the roofing
joists which will be 2x8x14, on 18 inch centers, running east and west. On top
of these will be 2x4's running north and south on 12 inch centers to hold the
steel roofing.
That covers all joists in the deck structure. I have almost half the deck
board joists in place as of 6pm tonight.

Tom this is food for thought as it would keep out the hot sun. I do think
though some light always gives a pleasant atmosphere. Rita

 Rita,
If you really don't care about looks, and don't want light or anything
else visie through, then cover the darned glass with
good old contact paper, now-a-days it's plastic.

You'd probably have to get them pretty clean first, but it can be had in
lots of patterns, and if its slick plastic shouldn't hold much dust.

Does require some carefull cutting and you have to get it on smooth the first
time, but it should last for years.

That should drive the sightlings nuts!
