[BlindHandyMan] Adjust an Automatic Garage Door

2008-12-17 Thread Ray Boyce
We bought a house with an automatic garage door opener. But the door never
opens far enough. Is it broken, or can I adjust it somehow?

It sounds like you simply need to adjust the travel on the door opener. Some
manufacturers place two setscrews at either the side or rear of the motor.
Other manufacturers include knobs on the bottom to adjust the travel. And
certain units have trip levers on the travel bar that can be repositioned.
These are all methods to adjust travel setting, and if you're confused about
your particular model, refer to the manufacturer's instructions.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] How did you Join the Electrical Extension Jewel

2008-12-17 Thread Jewel
Hi Ray! I have been kinda busy with other projects over the last few days, but
I will go ahead with
the plastic jar as the primary insulator, and, in time, will get some caulking
silicon to finish the
job.
The article on the correct installation and maintenance of an electric fence
was very interesting
and informative. Some of the information was new to me, but some of it I
already have in place,
such as regular cut-out switches at gateways to aid in tracing the whereabouts
of a short.
My fence puts out between 4 and 5000 volts so can be adversely affected by
grass growing up around
the wire.
Many years ago, maybe 30, Gallagher came up with an idea that they called a
"grass fence" This
consisted of two high voltage: around 5 if I remember correctly: wires that
were stretched 12
inches above the ground and the same apart. The idea was that the grass would
grow up between these
two wires and the stock would come to recognize this grass wall as being an
impassible barrier.
The success of the "grass fence" was reliant on exceptional grounding at the
start of the fence.
With the wires carrying such a high voltage, they were unaffected by the
vegetation surrounding
them, and it: the high voltage pulses: also killed off the grass in the
immediate vicinity of the
wire.
I haven't heard of this type of containment system for a very long time so I
suspect that the
concept didn't meet with wild approval.

It could be one of to things. You don't have the heat up high enough. It could
be the diverter tube out the cold water side or inlet of the tank. I would
check and see if it is the diverter Pipe. Than if you haven't, start draining a
gallon or two of water from the tank each month to get rid of build up.

  Hi Claudia,

Is your furnace still running continuously?

I have my furnace set up to operate the fan continuously for a number of
reasons but mostly to keep the temperature more even. As someone else
already said, the fan may run continuously with the fire coming on and off
until the house reaches the desired temperature. If the furnace is under
sized or the home inadequately insulated or particularly air leaky then the
furnace may well be working very hard and may even be unable to meet the
demand for the current temperature.

You have a problem only if it continues to operate beyond the desired
temperature as selected by the thermostat.

Still, I would be interested if it did catch up.

Old gas fired hot water heaters that do not produce much hot water may have a
broken fill tube inside. The tube directs inlet cold water to the bottom of
the tank. When broken the cold water is mixing with the hot water at the top

You can perform a continuity check with a meter. Just turn off the
power, remove the two wires which are connected to the coil (if this
is electric of course) and place a probe on each terminal from which
you removed the wires. This worked for me when I tested my water
heater, but this was over 15 years ago. I'm sure not much has changed
in that time.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Furnace Working Too Much?

2008-12-17 Thread Dale Leavens
Generally I do not find it cool with the fan running continuously. Drawing air
off of the floor and redistributing it tends to keep the air from layering
where it gets cool down where we are sitting and warm up nearer the roof.

I also have a ventilator running steadily dumping fresh outside air into the
air return of the furnace so, the furnace fan also mixes and distributes this
through the rooms of the house.

When the fan runs on demand, I find we get blasts of heat when the thermostat
is demanding and the intermittent starting and stopping of the fan and it's
attendant noise I find more annoying than just getting used to the constant
background sound.

All personal taste I am sure and maybe if we weren't built so close to the
floor we wouldn't notice the layering so much.

How new is it? If it's a Whirlpool there is an 800 number on the side of the
tank. Call them with the model number and they'll overnight you a gas valve.
This is a national recall on certain models.

Before we flood everyone's in box, I don't know the models involved that's why
I said to call Whirlpool. The problem deals with the flame not getting hot
enough and they send out the parts to you. It's your choice to have someone
install them for you or do it yourself.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] hot water problem

2008-12-17 Thread Bob Kennedy
You can drain it anywhere you want. The problem is you'll need to use a hose
and getting the flow started is sometimes a problem. If there is too much junk
in the tank you'll sometimes have to run a coat hanger or long rod into the
tank to bust a hole in the crud in the bottom. That is what makes such a mess.

[BlindHandyMan] draining a water heater

2008-12-17 Thread Bob Kennedy
If you look around the bottom of the tank you'll see a fitting. Some have a
plastic piece over the threads for protection. Others have a piece that looks
like you can attach the garden hose to it. Take the hose and put it on that
fitting. Then turn the valve to open it. The water will either come out or
there is a blockage and you'll have to find a way to get past the block. Last
one I had that was blocked I cut the hook off a coat hanger and straightened it
out. The parts that are twisted together will actually work like a drill bit.
I put the straight part in my drill and ran that through the opening. I got
soaked as my reward but the heater was in a utility room with a cement floor so
all was well. Except for me having to walk home in the cold with soaking wet
clothes... Something for the neighbors to wonder about.

[BlindHandyMan] cleaning out a hotwater tank

2008-12-17 Thread clifford
Dear List Members:
When our electric water-heater accumulated quite a lot of mineral deposits,
it became clear to me that simply draining the tank with a water hose was not
going to work satisfactorily. I drained the water from the tank and then
removed the bottom electrical element, which left a hole large enough to insert
a three quarter inch pipe. I bent a piece of copper tubing, which was three
quarter in diameter, and then connected the end to my shop vac. I then turned
the water back on to fill the tank to a depth of eight inches or so worked the
coppertube in to the bottom of the tank,
, and then turned on the vacuum until I had filled the vacuum cleaner tank. I
repeated this procedure until I had cleaned out the tank, which took quite a
lot of effort, as the sediment was roughly a foot deep in the bottom of the
tank. I then replaced the electrical element and refilled the tank before
turning on the power.
Anyone working on an electric tank should make sure that the power is
turned off before attempting to work on it
, or serious shock could result.

Yours Truly,

Clifford Wilson

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Underground electricity cable

2008-12-17 Thread Spiro
this requires the use of a poly olephan, or PVC heat shrink,. I'd go with
the poly olephan (forgive spelling)
as something like Teflon takes 550F to shrink and the heavy PVCs take over
250F.
Poly olephan can shrink in boiling water.
