RE: [BlindHandyMan] plumbing question

2009-07-09 Thread Michael baldwin
Kind of depends on the level of your main that your going to connect to.
You want your slope from the drain to the main to be 1/4 inch per every foot
of pipe. It can be more, but not less. Going under concrete, your drain
needs to be 2 inch diameter, and they don't make 2 inch bathtub drains, so
you will need to do some figuring to go from the 1 1/2 inch tub/shower drain
to a 2 inch P trap. All of that takes up space.

2009-07-09 Thread Dale Leavens
The trap has to be deep enough to allow the stem up to the shower drain only.
Could be as little as 6 inches I suppose. it wants to be high enough that the
run-out from the trap is at the very least as high but preferably a little
higher than the point where it enters the rest of the plumbing. You will need
more depth if you are installing a flush level fixture, the sort without a step
up into the shower pan.

You may also want to run a vent up to join the stack in the attic space
particularly if the bath or shower are further up stream from the rest of the
fixtures. This will also depend on the location of any other vent.

They did insulate inside the weight cavities.
The seal around the present sashes is not very good. I put removable caulk
around them every winter to cut down on drafts.
I'm in a rather unique situation. As a pastor I live in a church owned
house. I pay my utilities, so if I can persuade the church to install
really good, replacement windows, it will be better for me.
They took the inexpensive route 20 years ago. Now I think it's time to do
it better.

  Tom,

Do you know if they insulated inside the wells the weights used? Maybe you
live in a climate where that doesn't matter.

If the windows are of good quality, particularly thermal quality and fit
well you can simply buy and replace the sash glides. This is a lot cheaper
and so long as the windows are otherwise satisfactory this might be a better
solution.

  Hope this helps.

I've done it before. Unfortunately when I did the last one, one of the
vertical pieces of wood in the actual window framing was bad so that
involved milling a new piece to replace first and then the window. So the
majority of the work was done before the real job started.

If you're going to replace more than one, you'll learn the best way to do
it on the first window and the rest will be much easier.

With the old style having been replaced already it will be a lot easier
providing you get the correct size for replacement. You can get the
individual windows but for time and ease I bought the entire unit. Then it's
a matter of prying off the jams and unscrewing the old to remove and
reversing to install.

It will be important to have a level you can use or someone with sight to
help with that part. Not necessary to have a square since you won't be able
to square the opening without a lot of extra construction. Level and tight
to one side and the top of the opening first is the best way to go. Then
shim to make tight on the other side.

If the new unit doesn't go in square and level you'll never be happy. And
as Dale said be sure to insulate any open areas. My last job was on a brick
house and it wasn't real air tight. I used the spray foam insulation to
close up areas inside the window framework before installing the new window.

2009-07-09 Thread Dale Leavens
Well I don't know your machine at all but if you remove the rear panel, and
there may be two, one behind the console and the other covering the rear of the
machine, you should find a thin hose attached immediately behind the control
for the fill level. Often this is a dial which sort of clicks or ratchets
several times as you turn it, sometimes it snaps four or five positions for
various water depths. The back side of that control should have a hose or tube
about quarter inch thick running down to a point about three quarters or more
down the tub.

I don't know why it should fail unexpectedly like that, it might be the control
knob and mechanism itself which is sticking or failing.

[BlindHandyMan] A lesson learned the hard way.

2009-07-09 Thread Max Robinson
I have double posted this message to the BHM and WW4B lists because I
believe it is very important. I have found that bearing guided router bits
don't come from the store with the screws that hold the bearing on fully
tightened. I had the bearing come off of two bits from two different bit
sets from different manufacturers a few seconds after starting to route.
When I finally figured out what was going on I checked the third one from
yet a different set and found it was loose. I tightened it before using it.
So don't make the mistake I did. A set will usually come with an Allen
wrench that fits the screws. In the case of one of my sets the bits are in
english units but the Allen screw is a metric size. Check before you use.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Washing machine Problems!

2009-07-09 Thread Dale Leavens
Hello Joy,

This sounds to me like a problem with the water level sensor.

usually these are a rubber tube which extends up from an attachment to the tub
which is attached to a pressure sensor. As the tub fills the rising water
displaces air in the hose causing a diaphragm to distort eventually making an
electrical contact. The level control usually moves the contact point closer or
further from the diaphragm so the diaphragm must distort more or less to
complete the circuit. There are a few variations on the theme so please, the
purists on the list please forgive me if this isn't an exact description of
each device.

Once the contact is made usually the rest of the equipment operates, the water
is shut off, what ever other parts of the system continue their work. When the
electrical contact is broken everything stops and the filler solenoids again
activate until pressure causes the electrical contact to again close. If, for
any reason the contact does not close then the water continues to flow.

Maybe the most common fault is an air leak in the little rubber hose. The
pressure rises until the contact is made but over a little time some of the air
bleeds off and the pressure falls breaking the contact. Now, as more water
fills the tub it cannot raise the air pressure enough to make the connection
again.

If the leak is very slow then over night or some other extended period of time
the tube may fill enough with air to apparently work correctly for a time.

The leak may not be in the hose, it may be that the hose is a little loose on a
fitting or some other failed seal. It might even bee in the sensor. Sometimes
just pulling the tube off of the nipple and replacing it is enough to resolve
the problem..

machine got rather dramatically ill this afternoon. I don't believe I'm up to
repairing it myself but if anyone can help me to understand what is happening
before I have to deal with a repair person I'd feel a lot better. (Especially
since the person I usually hire is not available.)

I have an apartment sized World Pool, about eight years old. It has a
permapress setting that I was using today when this started. In this setting it
fills, swishes for a bit, partially drains, refills and then continues through
the cycle. During the rinse (fortunately I was nearby) I noticed that it hadn't
done the partial drain, and now it was filling again. Its been a while since I
used that setting so I thought maybe I had missed remembered. Well it kept
filling and while I did realize something was wrong fairly quickly
unfortunately not before the blasted thing over flowed. I got it draining and
began the clean up. I mainly used towels and hoped that if I used a different
setting all would be well. So I put the towels in. It began normally, filled to
the right level, started to move, than stopped and started filling again. I've
tried it on a variety of settings, unplugged it and replugged it (I learnt to
my horror last summer that its most expensive little part is a computer chip so
thought a sort of reset might help), but every time I try to restart it it

[BlindHandyMan] Do it yourself Gutters and Down Pipes

2009-07-09 Thread Ray Boyce
In general, gutters and downspouts are far from the most glamorous feature
of a home, but these systems are the unsung heroes that protect your house
from water damage. By collecting roof run off and diverting it away from the
building envelope, gutters and downspouts help to prevent damage such as
wood rot, mold and mildew.

The house shown in this article was built in 1978 and only had a single
gutter and two downspouts installed at the front, with nothing on the rear.
As a result, during a rainstorm the water was cascading off the rear of the
roof and pounding a trench along the foundation wall, where it was seeping
through the ground and migrating through the cinderblock, as evidenced by
water stains on the interior of the wall. By installing a gutter and a
couple of downspouts, the water is channeled away from that troublesome
trench and diverted across the yard and away from the house walls.

Professional installation of metal gutters usually involves specialized
equipment used to form gutters from sheet metal at the job site. One
advantage of professional installation is that the gutters can be installed
with a seamless system, which provides the best protection against leaks.
Plus, the gutter contractor will be the guy working atop a ladder at the
roof line, which is a big selling point for homeowners who aren't
comfortable with the heights of roof work. However, for do-it-yourselfers
who don't mind working on a ladder, you can save considerable labor costs by
installing a gutter using the sectional systems available at retail outlets
such as Lowe's Home Improvement Stores.

For this particular job, I picked up the materials at my local Lowe's
, which distributes Amerimax aluminum gutter
systems. The first step is to sketch out your gutter system on paper so you
can quantify the various components required. Measure your roof line and
wall height to calculate the number of 10-foot sections of gutter and
downspout you'll need. I was working with standard 5-inch gutters with a "K"
profile. Next, account for end caps, seamers, inside or outside corner
pieces, downspout elbows and end drops. You'll also need mastic for sealing
the joints, downspout bands to fasten to the house, and sheet-metal screws
to connect the downspout sections. To hang the gutter, you can choose from a
variety of fastener types. I chose to use hidden fasteners that are held to
the fascia with screws. Here's how a homeowner can install a gutter, protect
their home and save some cash by doing it themselves .

Getting Started

When installing a gutter system, be prepared to spend a lot of time working
at potentially dangerous heights. Because so much roof work is involved, I
highly recommend attaching a ladder stabilizer to the top of your ladder. I
picked up a Werner Ladder Stabilizer at Lowe's ,
which proved on this job to be the best 25 bucks I could have spent. Not
only does this simple bracket attachment safely prevent the ladder from
swaying from left to right while you're standing on it, but it also provides
a 10-inch standoff from the roof line, which makes it easy to access the
fascia and gutter without obstruction from the ladder. The stabilizer also
rests on the roof, rather than on the shingles, fascia or house siding, so
there's no worry of accidental damage from contact with the ladder.

To begin installation, safely position the ladder on even ground with the
ladder stabilizer firmly supported by the roof deck. Climb up to one corner
and hook the end of a string line at the point where you want the top edge
of the gutter to terminate. Unreel the line as you move to the opposite end
of the fascia. At that corner, first level the string, and then drop the
string about 1 inch per 40-foot run and leave the string line there as a
guide removing it later. This achieves a slope that helps gravity pull water
to the downspout locations. If you have a long run with downspouts at both
ends of the gutter, you can slope the gutter from its midpoint toward both
of the book-ending downspouts.

Preassembly

Even when using a ladder stabilizer, the safest and easiest way to work is
to assemble as much of the gutter system on the ground as possible.

I designed this particular gutter system to have a downspout at each end,
which required an "end drop" at each downspout location. To join the end
drop to the gutter-or to join any gutter section to another-requires a
"seamer." The seamer is a 3-inch wide piece of aluminum in a "K" profile to
match the gutter. First, apply gutter sealant or mastic to the top side of
the seamer piece. Then, wrap the seamer around the butted gutter components
from below. The front of the seamer hooks to the front edge of the gutter.
The rear of the seamer extends above the rear of the gutter, and you fold
this extended flap of metal over the rear edge of the gutter. Use pliers to
crimp both the front and rear lip of th

Hi,
I would like to hear from those that have a robotic mower. I am interested

Thinking of getting one for my new house. The wife mower just doesn't seem

[BlindHandyMan] Washing machine Problems!

2009-07-09 Thread Joy Cyr
To all you knowledgeable people, I'd like some advice please. My washing
machine got rather dramatically ill this afternoon.

In this setting
it fills, swishes for a bit, partially drains, refills and then continues
through the cycle. During the rinse (fortunately I was nearby) I noticed that
it hadn't done the partial drain, and now it was filling again. Its been a
while since I used that setting so I thought maybe I had missed remembered.
Well it kept filling and while I did realize something was wrong fairly quickly
unfortunately not before the blasted thing over flowed. I got it draining and
began the clean up. I mainly used towels and hoped that if I used a different
setting all would be well. So I put the towels in. It began normally, filled
to the right level, started to move, than stopped and started filling again.
I've tried it on a variety of settings, unplugged it and replugged it (I learnt
to my horror last summer that its most expensive little part is a computer chip
so thought a sort of reset might help), but every time I try to restart it it
wants to keep on filling. Any thoughts?

Sorry for the novel, ... didn't think there was a point in half the story!

Yours sincerely,
Joy

Hi Dan,

I'd rather stay away from heating the nylon. I don't know for sure but I
would think it might cause some warping or other damage to the sheet.

Take care,

Ed,

What if you heat up the nylon before trying to score it. It might make it
just that bit soft enough to take the blade. Not sure if the heat will

I'm not sure if they'll do U.S. orders or not, but I've got a connection
