Probably a finger nail will be as effective as you need. I don't think it will
stick real well to metal.

If that doesn't work try a little acetone. I don't know what effect that will
have on the band though.

List guidelines.

The topics that can be discussed on the Blind Handy Man list are as follows.

Here is a direct quote from the beginning of every show, "building repairing
or maintaining, all designed with the blind in mind". That can be your
house, car, or swimming pool ETC. No matter if it were how to do a job or
what would be the correct tool to use for the task in question. We have
people on here of all skill levels, from the beginner to those who build
additions on their houses. So never hesitate to ask what ever you might
need to know because most likely somebody on the list will be able to help
you out. The only question that can't be answered is the one that is never
asked.

This isn't really a gardening list although questions about lawn maintenance
such as mowing and that sort of thing are perfectly fine. Nor is it a
technical list relating to software questions, but repairing your computer's
hardware is certainly right on topic. If you have any doubt whether a given
post is on topic or not contact the moderator for approval. This is
especially recommended if it's a post that contains advertising unless
another member has previously requested the information. Also keep subject
lines relevant to the contents of your post. Lastly if you know a given
subject is off topic, then don't post it to the list.

This list is a great place to gather ideas and exchange information on
anything to do with being handy. So relax and enjoy.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Wireless Network Connection Unavailable?

2009-09-01 Thread Trouble
Only one problem here. If the router loses the ip. Then it alone can
not get out to the Internet. That problem is held with your provider
if they provide the router. if not then its up to router manufacture.
The lose of a ip does not have anything or ever will have anything to
do with the router losing the wireless connection with the computer.
Two totally different problems. The ips sent to wired and wireless
computers hooked to a router come off the routers own DHCP table.
Therefor the router is the provider of the ip to the computer no one else.
Think I'm wrong unplug the router from your providers connection. you
will not lose the connection with the router or network within.

Another condition that could cause this are cordless phones. They run
in the 2.4ghrtz range and so do router wireless connections. Only the
new model phones run out of this band.

Depends on how you connect to the router, and if your on a laptop.
Laptops have buttons or sliders that will let you shut off the connection.

[BlindHandyMan] another sound around system question

2009-09-01 Thread Brice
A few months back I bought some nice speakers for my desktop. The sound
around type with front, right, and middle speaker, rear left and right, and
a woofer that sits on the floor. Once I went to hook it up I found out I
didn't have enough input jacks on my sound card. So I had to buy an
external sound card, I bought one from Turtle beach which worked out fine.
The system sound great. So next I decided to by some head phones from
Turtle Beach called Ear Force X52 that I could use on my notebook. Since I
was over in the Bay Area, I stopped by Fry's Electronics and saved myself 20
bucks plus shipping and handling. Told the guy at fries what I wanted to do
and he said the ear force X-52 was ideal for my needs and would hook right
up to my notebook. Well when I got home I discovered that the head phones
had to different connections that would plug in at the end of the ear phone
cord, and it's got a round female connector. So one of input jacks had
your standard input jacks that you'd insert in to your sound card, or in my
case I hooked it to the ear phone jack in the front of the notebook. But
Damn it! this only produces stereo. In order to get the surround sound I
need to hook up the cable , one end being male and round, and the other end
pig tails out with four jacks. Is there some kind of device out there that
one end has a USB connection that I could hook these four jacks to and get
the surround sound?

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Bose

2009-09-01 Thread Scott Howell
Terry, I'd agree with you where music is concerned for the most part.
I don't know that the average person really understands all this and
I'm not an engineer, so I tend to follow my ears in all things. As a
bassist, I am very aware of the sound and quite frankly for long wear
and good sound, I have yet to find a pair of headphones that are as
good as the Bose Tri Port model. I literally wear headphones for
about 12 to 15 hours a day if not a little longer and these do not
annoy me or make my head feel tired or my ears for that matter. Of
course I haven't tried every pair in the world, but my last pair which
I really loved broke and I really didn't think I'd like these Bose
headsets. However, I've used them long enough now that I can't
imagine anything else at this point. I do wish there was a good cord
that wouldn't get tangled over time etc. Actually a wired wireless
pair would be great. You know one that didn't need charging, but
didn't need a wire either. grin.

I have to do that occasionally with my wired router. It must be a glitch in

2009-09-01 Thread Max Robinson
I'm afraid I can't help you with anything specific. If all you want is
something to listen to in the kitchen you could do just as well sound wise
and a lot better money wise with almost anything other than Bose. Most of
the big chain stores do have a return policy so you can take something home
and listen to it there. If you don't like it you can always take it back.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Bose

2009-09-01 Thread Terry Klarich
I think Bose make decent consumer grade speakers. One has to understand what
their goal is. They want to provide the best sound
they can in the smallest enclosure possible. Think of it as range of sound
verses the size of each speaker. Given this, they have
done a good job.

For most folks, as long as the mid range sounds good, the highs and lows can be
ignored. An example is: Bose uses vented woofers
making the enclosure a lot smaller. A lot of sound can be produced in a small
box with relatively little power. The draw back is
the enclosure is resonate over a very narrow range of frequencies. Bose tunes
this so they get a nice booming sound; but, this
doesn't accurately reproduce someone playing a bass guitar. Sounds good when
that car blows up during that movie though.

Bose have developed ways of deflecting the sound from their speakers such that
the sound will both flow directly from the speaker
to our ears and indirectly by bouncing off objects in the room. This is how we
hear naturally anyway. So, our brains can better
relate to the artificially produced sound. So, I wouldn't pay for Bose
technology in an open space. However, for spreading out the
sound from a small enclosure, it is adequate.

Personally, I very much enjoy listening to music. Late at night, I like to
listen to some good blues, jazz or
sometimes classical. A clear full rich sound is very important to me. I like
to hear not the instrument; but, the instrument
being played as will.

In short, Bose sound quite good for every day listening, watching TV ...
However, they can not accurately truly reproduce music
with the depth and warmth they claim.

As most things, it is a compromise. I do think they are overpriced because of
the Bose brand though.

Terry

expensive. I found a company call cambridge soundworks that, in my

I have heard them, and have been aware of them since the 80's.
I can say this for sure, expensive and worth the money in the sound
reproduction.
You may spend $2k and it will sound worth $4k.
They had a stupid dolby b that you couldn't turn off, in the earliest
system. I doubt there is anything on it even remotely like that now.
Can't say about the working, go get your hands all over one of them and
see if it will be right for you.

[BlindHandyMan] File - ListInformation.txt

2009-09-01 Thread blindhandyman

List guidelines.

The topics that can be discussed on the Blind Handy Man list are as follows.

Here is a direct quote from the beginning of every show, "building repairing or
maintaining, all designed with the blind in mind". That can be your house,
car, or swimming pool ETC. No matter if it were how to do a job or what would
be the correct tool to use for the task in question. We have people on here of
all skill levels, from the beginner to those who build additions on their
houses. So never hesitate to ask what ever you might need to know because most
likely somebody on the list will be able to help you out. The only question
that can’t be answered is the one that is never asked.

This is especially
recommended if it's a post that contains advertising unless another member has
previously requested the information. Also keep subject lines relevant to the
contents of your post. Lastly if you know a given subject is off topic, then
don't post it to the list.

This list is a great place to gather ideas and exchange information on anything
to do with being handy. So relax and enjoy.

[BlindHandyMan] how to fix older computer failing hard drive

2009-09-01 Thread Peter Mikochik
i have an old windows 98 computer in my music studio, which has all i need
for controling my multi track recording decks and for doing final mixing
down and creating cd's and mp3s.
it was taking about half an hour for the computer to load windows. and
another 10 minutes for the start menu to come up.
sound forge would load slowly but i could not open any files.

all my data files are on a 'd' drive, so i was not worried about loosing
all my work but to re-configure another computer to do what this one does
would take much money and weeks of work.

no virus, this machine is not on the internet and i never take any media
from anyone.
i never do upgrades and did not add any new software or drivers.
maybe a hardware problem.

i removed all running programs from the task manager except explorer,
window-eyes and systray, these are escential to keep running.
and made sure to get any extra programs out of the system start up.
this feature is buryed under the system configuration.

i also did a registery check.
same trouble.

i pulled out every card except the video and sound cards.
same.

i swapped out the memory for some different ones.
no good.
i re-seated the cpu and all the cables.

i was now pretty sure my hard drive was failing.

i got an external speech synthesizer, old boot floppy disk with
format.com, fdisk, scandisk, xcopy and dos speech software on it and
started the machine and ran my dos speech software.
then did the below scandisk

scandisk /surface /autofix /nosave

scandisk started copying over the bad sectors right away. it ran for 24
hours and was only 15 percent done.
i decided to stop it.

i got another hard drive from a known good computer and connected it to
the wires from my second cd drive, and copyed it's contents to my 'd'
data drive.
then i reformated it to be a bootable drive

format e:/s

i then wanted to use xcopy to take an exact copy of my failing drive, but
i could not do that in native dos because it would not preserve the long
file names, so i had to hope the failing drive had one more start up in it
i removed the floppy and powered up. again it took about half an hour to
fully load and i went to dos mode under windows and typed in

xcopy c:*.* e: /h /i /c /k /e /r /y /s

copying started at a pretty good pace, but after about 9 hours copy
failures started to come on each file and then the whir of the drive
stopped completely. about 75 percent of the drive copied over, but it
seemed that all the windows system and program files made it over.

i changed the jumper on the new drive from slave to master and connected
it to the wires from the failed one.
i pushed the floppy back in and powered up.

i thought it would not make it past the cmos and i would have to get
someone to read the screen and reset them, but it was recognized as my
primary master. lucky break.

i ran fdisk from the floppy and set the active partition on the new drive.
exited fdisk, took out the floppy and re-booted.

i was amazed when the drive read right away and started windows and is
just fine.

the computer now is exactly the same as it was, except it is much much
faster. i guess the old drive had been slowly failing for many weeks.

older computers are much more accesssible, just like older cars can be
fixed.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Bose

2009-09-01 Thread Dale Leavens
This spring I bought Janet a Tivoli radio. It is a small square device wit
simple tuning knob, it is rechargeable though which is interesting and it does
have an input jack. There is no tone control but the sound is quite good, is
designed to be weather resistant.

The radio is about four inches square and about 8 inches high.

Although the sound is remarkably good for a small radio, clearly not stereo,
the volume isn't particularly strong which is interesting for a device intended
for poolside listening.

Indoors though it is quite adequate.

[BlindHandyMan] interesting computer problem

2009-09-01 Thread Lenny McHugh
About a week ago my daughter's computer started acting up. Sometimes it
would not boot, then she received a few messages stating that her anti-virus
program was not compatible. Then she started getting messages that system
files were corrupted and were being removed.
I tried to help her recover first thinking that it was a virus. She is using
one of the best anti-virus programs so I was surprised at that thought. When
we could not recover or even boot in safe mode off to the computer shop we
go.
Talking to the repair guy I was not totally convinced that it was a software
issue. At first he re-assured me that it was software and should not be hard
to correct. After two days Kelly got her machine back with new memory. It
was hardware the memory chip failed. I once had a hard drive that acted like
that and my old computer the failing mother board produced similar results.
I have always found it interesting that a hardware problem may mimic a
software problem. It takes me back to the late 60s and 70s when we as
software developers would argue with the field engineers over a problem.
They would insist that the problem is software and we insisted that the
problem was hardware.

Claudia,

I remember years ago when I could see, I trialed one of those Bose systems .
It did sound pretty good but was very expensive. I remember it had a very
small, not very tactile remote, about the size of a credit card. Not sure
how blind friendly the product is. Have you considered some type of Mp3
player and just plug in a good set of computer speakers?

Claudia, on another list, these systems were discussed. Some say
that for small systems, they sound great. But, they have idiot
controls for tone, so if you don't like the presets, you have no way
of customizing your listening. Some said that if a person shops
around, he can get as a good of quality for less money.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Wireless Network Connection Unavailable?

2009-09-01 Thread Claudia
Thanks,

I'm sorry for the off-topic messages on this; I did resolve my issue, thanks to
great suggestions and Google.
This laptop does have a switch to disable & enable the connection, but I had no
idea of this until a few hours ago.
All is well again here.

Claudia

Wireless routers can be pretty temperamental sometimes. Unplug your
wireless router and count to 20 and plug it in again. That usually works.

  Hi,

Why would my wireless network connection be unavailable?

I'm connected right now, via the Ethernet cord, but I haven't ever had this
message come up, since I set up the connection?
  Thanks.

  Claudia
