Re: [BlindHandyMan] Hear It Coming, Before It Knocks You Over.
There are many of these electric cars here in Madison. There are also many streets that have odd intersections that come together at very odd angles. Sometimes 5 streets come together at once. There are also roads with stop signs as there are everywhere. When there is a stop sign and no parallel traffic and an electric car is going or waiting at the stop sign I certainly can't hear it. There have been many times when if I were using my cane and not my dog I would have been squashed. And I hope the NFB hires a real accoustics engineer who understands how to generate actually locatable sound and how to taylor it to the ambient noise. Otherwise some idiot will just put a sonalert on the things and we won't be able to tell em from those bloody backup beepers or car alarms. Tom

sorry to say amen brother Philadelphia has a few 5 way circles and other pents in my area and I'm not looking forward to the standard driving idiot (sorry, overwhelmed multi tasking visual person at the wheel) smacking me with a silent bullet. Center City Philadelphia has trouble enough with bicycles, and don't need the silent vehicle weighing over a ton. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Hear It Coming, Before It Knocks You Over.
It's those really noisy diesels, busses and trucks, needlessly loud motorcycles and hopped up exhausts which insist on revving their engines and otherwise making excessive noise which I object to. Can't hear a thing until they are blocks past you, hybrid, electric or anything else. Road construction, jack hammers, they all obliterate useful auditory information. Here we don't have so much trouble with that but the snow plows, snow throwers and in the summer, passing a lawn mower on a corner at a street crossing covers all useful sounds. Personally, I welcome quieter urban environments. Might even make one of those sonic devices so favoured by Tom a practical aide to mobility. - Original Message - From: Trouble To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Sent: Wednesday, February 20, 2008 10:03 AM Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] Hear It Coming, Before It Knocks You Over. you would think they could find a issue that is more forth coming then a handful of cars. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Hear It Coming, Before It Knocks You Over.
Speaking of roads and strange intersections, there are 2 that come to mind in my town. One is called 5 points and the other is 6 points. You can probably figure out why these intersections have these names. And they are a bear to cross. You can get around them, but I tried crossing 6 points once. Hopefully not again. funny you should mention this... Just last weekend I took my dog over to a local golf course where electric golf carts abound and talked some folks into letting us walk out in front of their golf carts so that both dog and I could get some idea about this whole hybrid car Bravo Sierra. It took my dog one close call and he realized that the silent cars were going to be his responsibility and from that point foreword he treated them like any other idiot driver during rush hour. -Original Message- From: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Boyce, Ray Sent: Tuesday, February 19, 2008 7:37 PM To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Hear It Coming, Before It Knocks You Over. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Hear It Coming, Before It Knocks You Over.
Seeing Eye has a Toyota Prius that they use during training. I can hear them coming unless there is other traffic. Then too, I play a good bit of golf and the first time I heard a hybrid I asked if someone was driving a golf cart on the street. They are actually quieter than a cart. - Original Message - From: Larry Stansifer To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Sent: Tuesday, February 19, 2008 9:59 PM Subject: RE: [BlindHandyMan] Hear It Coming, Before It Knocks You Over. funny you should mention this...
