Re: [BlindHandyMan] Hear It Coming, Before It Knocks You Over.

2008-02-20 Thread David Sexton
There are many of these electric cars here in Madison. There are also many
streets that have odd intersections that come together at very odd angles.
Sometimes 5 streets come together at once. There are also roads with stop signs
as there are everywhere. When there is a stop sign and no parallel traffic and
an electric car is going or waiting at the stop sign I certainly can't hear it.
There have been many times when if I were using my cane and not my dog I would
have been squashed.

It's those really noisy diesels, busses and trucks, needlessly loud motorcycles
and hopped up exhausts which insist on revving their engines and otherwise
making excessive noise which I object to. Can't hear a thing until they are
blocks past you, hybrid, electric or anything else. Road construction, jack
hammers, they all obliterate useful auditory information.

Here we don't have so much trouble with that but the snow plows, snow throwers
and in the summer, passing a lawn mower on a corner at a street crossing covers
all useful sounds.

Personally, I welcome quieter urban environments. Might even make one of those
sonic devices so favoured by Tom a practical aide to mobility.

Speaking of roads and strange intersections, there are 2 that come to mind in
my town. One is called 5 points and the other is 6 points. You can probably
figure out why these intersections have these names. And they are a bear to
cross. You can get around them, but I tried crossing 6 points once. Hopefully
not again.

funny you should mention this...
Just last weekend I took my dog over to a local golf course where electric

It took my dog one close call and he realized that the silent cars were
going to be his responsibility and from that point foreword he treated them
like any other idiot driver during rush hour.

Members of the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) will testify
before the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee regarding the extreme
  danger silent
hybrid cars pose to the blind, as well as other pedestrians, cyclists,
  and small children.

  Date: February 19, 2008
  Time: 1:00 p.m.
Location: Miller Senate Office Building, Room 2 East
  Annapolis, Maryland 21401

When compared to vehicles using traditional combustion engines, hybrid
vehicles are virtually silent when accelerating and decelerating, making
  it impossible
for blind individuals to detect their presence. To address this problem,
Senator Norman Stone has introduced Senate Bill 276. If passed, the bill
  will
establish a task force to make recommendations regarding a minimum sound
standard for all new vehicles sold and licensed in Maryland.

  and self-confidence.
It is the leading force in the blindness field today and the voice of
the nation's blind. In January 2004 the NFB opened the National
  Federation of the
Blind Jernigan Institute, the first research and training center in the
United States for the blind led by the blind.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Hear It Coming, Before It Knocks You Over.

2008-02-19 Thread Bob Kennedy
Seeing Eye has a Toyota Prius that they use during training. I can hear them
coming unless there is other traffic. Then too, I play a good bit of golf and
the first time I heard a hybrid I asked if someone was driving a golf cart on
the street. They are actually quieter than a cart.

  funny you should mention this...
Just last weekend I took my dog over to a local golf course where electric
golf carts abound and talked some folks into letting us walk out in front of
their golf carts so that both dog and I could get some idea about this whole
  hybrid car Bravo Sierra.
It took my dog one close call and he realized that the silent cars were
going to be his responsibility and from that point foreword he treated them
like any other idiot driver during rush hour.
