[BlindHandyMan] Just thinking about portable power

2007-07-06 Thread Mike Rusk
I have several cordless power tools but I'd like to find a small generator or
portable power supply for the times I am in my shed or in the yard and need
power for my tools that aren't cordless.
My shed is over 100 feet from the nearest power supply and some of the bushes
we need to trim are even further. I bought a cordless hedge trimmer that works
pretty good, but if we forget to charge it, well you know.
I have a drill I really like to use for some things and it is corded.
I have been searching some of the hardware giants but seem only able to find
monster generators to help me out if my home loses it's electricity.
Thanks, the tool collector.

2 ideas come to mind.
In a pinch you could get a 110 v or is it 120v inverter. This will hook up
to your car battery with alagator clips and they come in a variety of power
ratings. I don't know a lot about them but I do know that you hook it to the
car battery or cigarette lighter and it has a number of standard outlets
that you can plug just about any thing into it providing what you are
plugging in does not exseed what the unit is capable of providing for. I don
't think they are very expensive.
The other option that I have found is at a site called
www.kensolar.com <http://www.kensolar.com/> \the portable solar generator
that they offer sounds like quite the outfit.
Only problem for most of us is that they start at about 1290 dollars.
$1190 to be exact. If you buy that generator let me know how well it works.

Only 1 thing about those inverters. If you use the car battery to run it, you'd
better start the engine. Otherwise, you may find after using for a while, the
car won't start, in which case you better have access to an extra car and
jumper cables or a car battery charger. It's that discharging the battery
thing. I bought one for a friend and I believe you could run it for about 30
minutes if the engine was off. Of course, the manuals for them will tell you
exact times and additional info you will need, but just thought I'd post a
friendly reminder.

It depends what you're using them for. You are going to need a pretty
strong battery because just using them will suck the life out of them and
those batteries are going to need a good re-charge.

The inverter is not likely to give much power, 150 watts at the maximum.
Gasoline generators are made as small as 500 watts. They are about the size
of a small lawn mower.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Just thinking about portable power

2007-07-07 Thread Tom Fowle
Honda and other manufacturers make relatively small portable
gasoline driven generators in the 500 watt to 1000 watt range.
the one I saw was a few years ago and was small enough you could
easilly pick it up with a provided handle.

I'd guess they cost at least a couple hundred bucks, and of
course require gas, oil and maintenance to some extent.

they're not too noisy these days and are pretty appealing if you
don't mind a rather dirty 2 cycle engine spewing fumes about.

Inverters using car batteries are not going to run a decently
sized power tool for long if at all. 5 or 7 hundred watts at 12
volts is a lot of juice for a car battery and might get you an
hour or three of use. Also heavy and need to be stored and
charged where any hydrogen leakage during charging can't collect
and cause a fire danger.

Good morning,

Last night I had a look at WWW.BossToolSupply .com, admittedly a Canadian
company in Windsor just at your boarder. They have generators from around $300
on up beyond $7,000, a couple of diesels, some Hondas, two and four cycle
gasoline engines I think one was rated at 19 horsepower and with output from I
think 750 watts to 12 Kilowatts. Several had electric start.

There is a good and useful looking selection in the 6 to 12 hundred dollar
range, two to 5 kilowatts.

Google is your friend.

Dear Mike:
Honda makes a small light weight unit which can be carried by one person
quite comfortably. I have a friend who has one of these little fellows, and it
powers saws, drills and the like without problem. Another plus, is that it is
quiet, when compared to my heavier unit on wheels which is a 4.5 KW unit. As
with any Honda product, the cost is not at the bottom of the pack, but you
might want to check out one of them?

If you are going to use a battery and inverter setup, I think you would
want to use a Marine Deep Discharge battery. I believe that is what they
are called. Regular car batteries do not hold up well if they are deeply
discharged regularly.

deep cycle batteries have thicker lead plates and are designed to be
mostly discharged between recharge cycles.

The hot setup for something like that is to purchase two or
more 6-volt deep cycle batteries wire them in series or
series parallel so that you end up with 12-volts out to
your inverter. At $90.00 per for a premium deep cycle
battery, the inverter, a high quality deep trickle charger
and a cart to hall the whole thing around. You could buy a
decent generator and be done with it.

If you are going to use a battery and inverter setup, I
think you would
want to use a Marine Deep Discharge battery. I believe that
is what they
are called. Regular car batteries do not hold up well if
they are deeply
discharged regularly.

deep cycle batteries have thicker lead plates and are
designed to be
mostly discharged between recharge cycles.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Just thinking about portable power

2007-07-09 Thread Mike Rusk
I have this inverter, a battery charger with deep cycle charge capability, so
is all I need is the battery or batteries and something to tote it with?

The hot setup for something like that is to purchase two or
more 6-volt deep cycle batteries wire them in series or
series parallel so that you end up with 12-volts out to
your inverter. At $90.00 per for a premium deep cycle
battery, the inverter, a high quality deep trickle charger
and a cart to hall the whole thing around. You could buy a
decent generator and be done with it.
