I'm not too sure about these wasps. So
far, over a period of four or five nights, we have
used at least 2 full cans of wasp and hornet
killer, a heavy dusting of Sevin, poking with a
metal rod, and some kerosene set beside the hole.
Tom heard that the wasps will inhale the kerosene
fumes, and will die. I was just hoping they would
use the gas for fuel to transport themselves
elsewhere. Tom said the hole seemed to be about
10 inches deep, but since the hole is at the base
of a bush, he can't really see a definite shape to
the hole. Although the numbers have gone down,
those damn wasps are still doing a lot of flying
around. Tom hasn't seen them flying into the hole
like they were, but they are still flying all
around it, and probably into it also. We are
guessing that there is another nest close by, but
he hasn't found it yet.

The saga continues.

We had yellow jackets when I was a kid. My dad always painted over

helpful for both Tom and you. Not many bees or hornets swim underwater.
Install a fence around your pool but when working in the yard a good

outrun any chasing buzzing or pesky hornets. this advice is brought to

Brother Wilson, as a practicing attorney it seems shocking you would
give advice on Killing by starvation to critters which only want to
inflict pain by biting, if you would the hind quarters of a human. Well,
now that I have thought this over, in a court of law, I would suppose
this could be considered self defense, if , for some odd reason a

Re: [BlindHandyMan] What's the buzz?

2006-08-24 Thread cliffwilson
Dear Boop:
If you can get to the wholes cleanly, place a clear glass jar over both
wholes. The best results are obtained when this is done at night. The bees
or yellow-jackets will not normally dig another whole, but will instead,
keep trying to fly out through the glass. You will need to leave the jars
in place until the nest has starved out, so checking it out each day is not
advised.

Yours Truly,

the hand before we knew the bees were there, and
after 4 days, you can almost see the knuckle
again. We have sprayed that hole, then he sprayed
another hole that he found about 6 feet away from
the first hole. Last night I walked outside about
an hour after he sprayed and all I could hear were
the swarming bees. Does anyone have another
solution to get rid of the bees? We have used two
or three cans of spray on them so far, but they
 are still there.

so we snuck in through the other door and took the truck for a ride.
the wasps followed till we hit 20 grin then we left them behind.

when we lost all the wasps we dug the nest out with a board and ran it over
a couple 5 times grin.

mower, even in 3rd gear. Tom found a large paper
wasp nest in the bush he was trimming. The nest
was about the size of a basketball when he sliced
into it. The wasps were not impressed with the
remodeling job. I happened to look out the window
just after he did it, and saw the trimmers flying
though the air past the window, and Tom high
stepping it across the yard. Bees and wasps can
fly faster than Tom can run too. He got nailed
about 8 times that time.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] What's the buzz?

2006-08-23 Thread tunecollector
How long have the bees been there? Are we talking dozens of bees or
hundreds? Whatever measure you take, do it around midnight and not during
the day. You indicate that these bees are in the ground. Put detergent
into boiling water and pour that on the hole.

Here is the problem.
We have flower beds right outside our main
door. There are some different bushes and flowers
planted in the 10 foot bed. Right now, there is
also some kind of ground nest of
bees/wasps/hornets planted right at the base of
one of the bushes. The bed is about 4 feet from
the house and is covered in bark mulch, so burning
them out is not an option. Tom got nailed once in
the hand before we knew the bees were there, and
after 4 days, you can almost see the knuckle
again. We have sprayed that hole, then he sprayed
another hole that he found about 6 feet away from
the first hole. Last night I walked outside about
an hour after he sprayed and all I could hear were
the swarming bees. Does anyone have another
solution to get rid of the bees? We have used two
or three cans of spray on them so far, but they
are still there.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] What's the buzz?

2006-08-23 Thread Boop
Tom found the nest the hard way this past
Saturday, but since we had been gone for the week
before that, we aren't sure how long the nest has
been there. Tom watched the wasps flying into the
nest yesterday afternoon and said there was one
flying in about every two seconds. He is guessing
at a few dozen, but there could be more than one
nest. I say there are way too damn many of them.
Does that help you on the count? I could hear
them this morning while standing about 10 feet
from where we think the hole is. It was just a
constant hum. As I was standing there listening,
a hummingbird fly right past my head and scared
the crap out of me. Who's jumpy? Will any kind
of detergent work, or do they dislike a certain
brand more than others?

You want a laugh? I just happen to be listening
to the book The Secret Life of Bees right now.
Go figure!

Thanks for the info.

Hi there,

I have vinyl siding and it hasn't stain it or My wife would have raise hell.
plus I live on 9 acres in the middle of the lot, where there are only 2
acres that are cleared and the rest is woods. This year, I had a
professional come in early spring and had them treat the house for $135,
with a guarantee of 9 month without a insect problem. No bees, hornet
spiders, wasps and etc. It was worth the money spend and for the nest in the
surrounding trees, I still use Bugs be Gone.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] What's the buzz?

2006-08-23 Thread tunecollector
Liquid soap, preferably one that will leave a soapy film. Since the soap
contains phosphate, it won't hurt your plants and may actually do them some
good. Do this at night because the bees/wasps/hornets are dormant then
Still, dump a large boiling pot of soapy water and run like hell. There was
an earlier post on this list about making non-toxic insect spray that
suggested mixing in jalapeno peppers. I have never done this so I don't
know how good of a deterrent the peppers would be.
You want to get those guys out of there before they start making combs.

A couple of other thoughts.
Set a bug zapper buy the entrance and turn it of. It will take a couple of
days but it will work.
And if you are going to use an insect spray, try Spectracide which is good
for all kinds of bugs including bees.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] What's the buzz?

2006-08-23 Thread Tom Fowle
boop,
They're probably ground nesting yellow jackets.
or that's what they'd bee in this region.
I'd get professional help, they can be very aggressive, and, I believe
can cause problems for folks who are allergic to beas etc.

If that's what they are, they'll go for food of any kind, so do not, not
go outside with any food at all.

We vacationed a few years ago at a very nice african theme park near here,
Safari west, and the staff told us it took them years of poisoning to get
rid of yellow jackets so that folks dared eat outside.

Sorry, I hate stinging bugs.
Intelligent design my foot!

Tom

RE: [BlindHandyMan] What's the buzz?

2006-08-23 Thread Boop
Hey Max,
Nope, western conifer seed bugs aren’t the
same as love bugs. These are closer to what
people call stink bugs. These bugs are big, ugly,
fly in an erratic pattern, will drop out of no
where, and stink to high heavens when you kill
them. They also have an odor when they are alive,
but not as bad as right when you kill them. We
had them so bad about 6 years ago that I could
find hundreds of them on the house in the late
afternoon. We never found anything that would
kill them. They try to get in a warm place, like
an attic, for the winter. They don't sting, but
can crawl through very small openings, like a
CLOSED window. OK, enough of that. Those damn
things will be around here soon enough.

Boop

Are those the ones that are known in polite
circles as love bugs? They have them in Florida.
Have never run into them in Kentucky.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] What's the buzz?

2006-08-23 Thread Boop
Thank you Dale. I'll bee sure to keep this.
This isn't the first, or last time we have found
nests around here. I learned that finding them
with the lawn mower is not a good way to find a
ground nest. Bees and wasps can fly faster than a
mower, even in 3rd gear. Tom found a large paper
wasp nest in the bush he was trimming. The nest
was about the size of a basketball when he sliced
into it. The wasps were not impressed with the
remodeling job. I happened to look out the window
just after he did it, and saw the trimmers flying
though the air past the window, and Tom high
stepping it across the yard. Bees and wasps can
fly faster than Tom can run too. He got nailed
about 8 times that time.

Thanks again for the information.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] What's the buzz?

2006-08-23 Thread Betsy Whitney, Dolphin Press
Hi:
I had bees in the attic once and I was told that I needed to wait
until after dark when they were all inside before setting off a bug
bomb. Is it possible to put something like a brick over one of the
holes that you know about, set off a bug bomb in the other one and
then cover it with a brick or board?
I don't know about ground bees.
Betsy

Here is the problem.
We have flower beds right outside our main
door. There are some different bushes and flowers
planted in the 10 foot bed. Right now, there is
also some kind of ground nest of
bees/wasps/hornets planted right at the base of
one of the bushes. The bed is about 4 feet from
the house and is covered in bark mulch, so burning
them out is not an option. Tom got nailed once in
the hand before we knew the bees were there, and
after 4 days, you can almost see the knuckle
again. We have sprayed that hole, then he sprayed
another hole that he found about 6 feet away from
the first hole. Last night I walked outside about
an hour after he sprayed and all I could hear were
the swarming bees. Does anyone have another
solution to get rid of the bees? We have used two
or three cans of spray on them so far, but they
are still there.
