Re: [BlindHandyMan] figuring out how steep a slope of a hill is.

2007-04-30 Thread cliffwilson
Dear Jim:
You have already received several good tips on this subject, but I like to
keep things simple. I would suggest that you find a five foot piece of lumber
and then nail a piece at ninety degrees at one end which is nine inches from
the other plank to its end. Find the steepest part of your lawn and put the
short leg down hill with the long section going up the slope. Use a level to
determine whether or not the top of the long piece is level, or if it is
necessary to pick up the short section to obtain a level reading on top of the
long board. If it is necessary to raise the short leg to obtain a level
condition, your slope is more than fifteen percent. If it is necessary to
raise the long section off of the ground to obtain a level reading, you are
below fifteen percent grade.

Yours Truly,

Clifford

Ps. The five foot measurement needs to be to the junction of the short and long
pieces.Wilson

It would probably be pretty difficult to get a board the whole length of the
  hill, so I would
suggest using a string. Of course, you would want to keep the string as
  close to level as possible.

Use a board and hold it straight and level from the top of the hill, then at
the end of the board measure straight down to the ground.
for every 12 inches in length, a 27 percent grade will drop 3.24 inches.
for every 12 inches in length, the drop will be 1.8 inches for a 15 percent
  grade.
I would do this a few places a long your hill just to get an average.

  Hi,

I am thinking about getting one of them robotic lawn mowers, but I have some
hills and need to know the percent grade of the slope of the hill. Can
anyone tell me how I could figure this one out?

It needs to be under 15% grade for one and the other choice needs to be
under 27% grade, so if anyone can help me figure this out it would be
  appreciated.

My idea is very similar to others. Using a board of a known length, put a
level on it, with of course one on the ground. Measure the distance to the
ground from the end in the air. Make sure the measurement is taken from the
side touching the ground and not the top of the board. Divide the measurement
by the length of the board. Make sure both numbers are in inches or feet.
Tjhe decimal fraction is the percent of grade. Move the decimal point two
places to the right for correct percent statement.
