On my brother's 2006 Volvo simi. The key is like the old ford style,
but instead of tumbler cuts its just flat rectangle with embedded
chips. Put the key in and it unlocks. in the dash you have to go
through a series of buttons to start or the alarm goes off and gps
calls the cops.

I hate to start an answer with it depends. But it does. Many of
the newer cars have a chip in the key that doesn't even require the

chip. The same thing happens in many of the keyless entry doors.
Just wave the keys near the door and they unlock.

GM for years used the VATS ignition system. The key had a resister
on the metal of the key and the decoder in the switch got a signal
from the computer telling it whether the resistance of your key was
the same on record in the computer. I spent a good bit of time
learning how to defeat that system last summer. But for those that
have the key, that's a very vague idea of how it works. I can put
everyone to sleep explaining in detail how it works but that's the
readers digest version.

Does anyone know how an ignition key can open and lock a car? My wife asked
me that yesterday and I had know answer for her other than it may have some
kind of battery in it that may get charged as it's in the ignition. Ours
even has what they call a panic button.

There is a battery that allows the key fob, which may be integrated
into the key, to unlock the doors etc. There is a chip typically in
the key (in the portion that hangs out of the ignition slot) that
tells the vehicle basically this key belongs to me and I can start
with this key. Otherwise, it would not start or may run for a few
seconds and stop. That requires no battery and I suspect it is sort of
a proximity thing where the key has to be so close or in the ignition
to function.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] ignition key

2009-07-10 Thread Dan Rossi
There are a couple of good articles about RFID keys on
www.HowStuffWorks.com

My friends have a Toyota Prius and you don't even put a key in an
ignition. When you walk up to the car, it automatically unlocks the doors,
when you walk away, it locks them. (Assuming you have the key fob). When
you get in the car, you can put the fob in the dash board to activate
things.

It's very strange though to not actually turn a key and put the car in
gear. The Prius has a shift lever, but it doesn't move into discrete
positions, you just flick it one way and the car is in forward, or another
way and the car is in reverse, but the joy stick always returns to center.

The type I was referring to has two button on the key itself. One to unlock
the doors, and another that causes the horn to beep as the doors lock.
Also, one of the buttons will beep on and off to locate your car if you
can't remember where your parked, or in case your being attack in a parking
lot. Also called a panic button.

So is that a wireless thing, or is there actually a circuit and contacts
that are inserted into the slot?

THink someone answered this for you, but like he said, it depends. My
father had a Chevy truck made in 1997 that had a separate chip that
you put into a slot under the dash and you had to insert this before
it would start. However, I think you got more answers from folks that
know more than I do. grin

had no idea how to do this replacement. I found this thread

I got the ignition key cylinder installed and I only had to
buy $40 worth of tools. Every thing is back together and
working properly, only one problem. Just behind the steering
wheel is a plastic cover and under that cover, when I took
it off, there was a piece of plastic that looks kind of like
a corner piece with a piece about 2 inches long and about a
quarter to half inch wide sticking out one side. I don't
know what it was supposed to do and I can't for the life of
me find anywhere that it will fit. I know it belongs under
the plastic cover because when I took off the cover it fell
on the floor. Well I guess I will have to find some one with
a book and see if it shows a picture. Some times on those
types of things I think they may not always show every thing
in the book. Now I just have to get the tires changed,
remedy the power steering leak and the coolant leek and put
the tabs on the car and have my wife drive it until I find
more crap wrong with it. OH I guess while I am at it I might
as well just go ahead and change the oil and pick up an air
cleaner Robert
