Re: [BlindHandyMan] power drain cleaning story

2010-01-04 Thread Max Robinson
The last time we had to call a plumber was when our kitchen sink was plugged
up. He snaked out the line and installed a Y connector just past the trap.
He explained that the next time I could take the plug out of the end of the
Y connector and run the snake down it bypassing the trap. He said I could
also run water down the drain while snaking. I did it last month and it
worked exactly the way he said it would. As soon as the end of the snake
cleared the clog the water drained away. The snake I have is very simple.
One end chucks up in the drill and the other end has that spring on the end.
No gears. The middle part is covered with some kind of rubbery plastic.

Regards.

Something like 25 years ago I was remodeling a building for a clinic. Some
of this involved rearranging washrooms and of course old drains which were

rotorouter and all stood around in fascination as he snaked down the old
toilet hole describing as he went how he could feel the snake turn left out
of the building then left again toward the street then meeting some

About three or four minutes into the process there was a shattering sound
behind the wall and a thrashing. Turns out there was a toilet on the other
side of the partition feeding into the same common drain. His snake went
down one hole and right back up the other largely destroying the washroom in
the facility at the rear of the building. thankfully the unit was nothing

Having been in the tool rental/leasing business for 15 or so years, I can
sympathise with old Frank. Sadly, there's a huge body of case law out there
where rental houses have been held accountable under product liability
statutes etc. even when they've done all they possibly can do to educate
their customers.
For a mon and popp rental outfit, the cost of product liability insurance is
staggering.

I have a friend that owns a tool rental shop. He has a power drainer that he

will only rent the root cutting one to a licensed plumber. One guy came in
and insisted upon renting that unit. He told Frank that he worked with a
plumber for ten years and has used the machine in the past. Frank made him
sign a paper stating that the shop is not responsable for any damage caused
by the machine. The unit came with 25 feet of cable. Shortly after the guy
came back for more cable for the machine. He was given another 50 feet.
about an hour later he came back for more cable. After he had about 200 feet

he brought the machine back. He told Frank that when he was out about 180
feet the neighbor called him asking what is that thing flying around in my
yard.
He actually cut through his drain line about 3 feet from where he fed in
the cleaner. Frank drove past the guy's home the next day and there was a
back hoe in the front yard.
He will never again rent that machine to anyone but a licensed plumbing
contractor that shows proof of insurance.

You can save yourself a fortune if you dig and run your own line. But you'll
lose more than you save if you try tapping into the main line. They are pretty
serious about their fines if you do your own tapping.

I've done a lot of things that might require permission from one city or
another. But I've never tapped the main sewer line. I won't even end that
with a yet. It's not that I'm afraid to try, I know the cost of the fines in
many places. Figure if you have to be bonded before you can receive a permit,
you're already on the record for a bunch.

[BlindHandyMan] power drain cleaning story

2010-01-03 Thread Lenny McHugh
