[BlindHandyMan] sound card problem

2008-12-12 Thread Lenny McHugh
I have an interesting hardware problem. Periodically jaws stops talking.
With a restart the windows music plays but jaws still did not talk. I can
play a music file again with no jaws. I pulled out the speaker cable and
plugged it back in and jaws was talking. This is the 3rd time that it
happened. I am only using one set of speakers and Karen checked all settings
before I touched the cable. The sound card is built on the mother board. Any
guesses why just unplugging and re plugging in the speaker cable corrects
the problem?

I really think it is hardware. Been using the same configuration for about 6
years and had the problem 3 times in the last 8 or 9 months. It is
definitely hardware the last time it happened I just touched the back of the
computer case and jaws started talking. Where I am at a loss is why only
jaws
stops talking and music plays ok and I only have two speakers. If it is a
mother board problem time to look for a new machine, If just the sound card
part I could add a pci sound card and disable the on board one.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] sound card problem

2008-12-12 Thread cheetah
well it could be a slight ground problem.
try opening the box and tightening the card where the speaker jacks are.
the music maystill work because its grounded from somewhere else.
just a guess.
and its verry slite as you touch it and jaws comes back to life.
heck tighten every bolt and screw you see .
also maybe reseat the card if the jacks are on one.
maybe check all the plugs are seated nice and tight.

2008-12-12 Thread Victor
Hi Lenny,

I also have had this problem, and have noticed that it only happens when I
have my Skype phone attached to the USB port.

What happens is I'll restart my system, then, for no apparent reason, the
windows theme music will come on, but I wait and wait and wait, and no jaws.

So, what I did was turn Narrator on, and discovered that Jaws was indeed
working, but just wasn't speaking, or coming through the sound card.

Once I shut down Jaws and restart it again, Jaws comes back without a hitch.

Obviously, I use Narrator to help me unload Jaws, but once Jaws comes back,
it's working fine, so I can then shut down Jaws.

What I think may be the solution is to change the IRQ ports settings if you
have anything else plugged into your computer.

So, the question is, do you?

Have something plugged into your computer, like a VOIP or Skype phone?

Some other device that you use your ears with?

Possible a USB microphone or something like that?

Like I said, if that's the case, then you need to reassign the IRQ ports to
another channel, because I think a conflict may be happening that is causing
the external device to take over the sound, when it shouldn't be.

Either way, if you don't have any external device plugged into your
computer, then all of this is a moot point. Smile.

Hi Victor, No, I am running a vanilla system. I do have a usb external drive
but only plug it in and turn it on once every two weeks for a system backup.
I do not keep my printer on until I need it or the scanner.
I probably will try as suggested to tighten everything. I do not know if on
board sound cards can be reseated.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] sound card problem

2008-12-13 Thread Trouble
Victor your problem with jaws is a known issue and jaws. if you plug
any sound device in after the install of jaws. it will default to
that device for output. the trick there is if running xp set the
sound card in the jaws.ini file. For what ever sound card you want.
if running vista, just set it in the playback options as the default.
With lenny it could be loose plug ends. on board sound cards this can
happen very easy. Just by plugging and unplugging the cables or by
moving the cables around.
To reset on board sound chips. You will have to do some soldering,
and think it would be easier to just get a PCI sound card. They are
cheap now and will give you better sound even without using your ram
to do its work.

2008-12-14 Thread Tom Fowle
Lenny,
Notice carefully if JAWS talks only out of one chanel or the other. I'd bet
it talks only through either right or left sides and that the music is
either a real stereo file or comes through both chanels.

if this is the case, then the problem is that one connection on either the
plug or the jack is intermittent and since the music comes from both
chanels, you hear it.

If jaws talks through both chanels, I'm stumpped, However get a can of spray
contact cleaner and squirt a very small amount on the speaker plug, then
shove it in the jack and wiggle it about a bit. I'll bet that solves it.

Probably corosion in the join between jack and plug.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] sound card problem

2008-12-14 Thread Lenny McHugh
Tom, I like you are stumped. When it is talking the sound comes through both
speakers. When it is not talking the music still plays through both
speakers. It did it again and I just tapped the cable and it started
talking. As the late Joe Labrini, an old Burroughs field engineer, use to
say he did not get paid for hitting it but he got paid for knowing where to
hit it.
I am ready to purchase a pci sound card but first plan to check the sales
for a new machine. This one was purchased near the end of 2000.

it talks only through either right or left sides and that the music is
either a real stereo file or comes through both chanels.

if this is the case, then the problem is that one connection on either the
plug or the jack is intermittent and since the music comes from both
chanels, you hear it.

2008-12-14 Thread Dale Leavens
I suggest you open the box, identify the board that the speakers plug into or
the cable from the speaker jacks back to the board then press that connection
firmly down, lift it up and press it down a few times to shift the pins a
little. sometimes a little corrosion forms on the pins and this usually breaks
it up or at least reseats the plug. The little vibration you produce in
jiggling the cable may be achieving a similar thing.

While there, I like to firmly press any of the chips down into their sockets.
You must support the opposite side of the board when doing that but often a
chip or two will emit a little squeak as it too reseats and this can also
restore a doubtful connection.

You should probably unplug the machine and a cautious person would also clip a
ground from you to the chassis of the computer. I have never done this and not
had a problem but it could be a problem.

  Lenny,
Notice carefully if JAWS talks only out of one chanel or the other. I'd bet
it talks only through either right or left sides and that the music is
either a real stereo file or comes through both chanels.

if this is the case, then the problem is that one connection on either the
plug or the jack is intermittent and since the music comes from both

Lenny,
First see that the plug and jack are clean, I'd bet you a doughnut that's
the problem. Also try another set of speakers or a pair of earphones
if you have them to be sure the problem isn't in the wire.
