Once you buy the jack you go to their site and set up your phone system. You
can choose an area code and part of the number you'd like.

When you're done you can make or receive calls through your computer.

Does MagicJack receive telephone calls? Is there a number assigned to it or
is it a call-out system only?

Didn't see or hear anything about that on their site.

I've had internet service through my cable company for several years.
Recently I hooked up to the cable phone service. They switched out my modem
for a slightly bigger one that serves the computer and the phone. It's
sitting under my computer table on top of the UPS. I have noticed that
since getting cable phone my internet service is much more reliable. I
guess they put folks with cable phone on a higher priority to maintain
service so that both phone and internet stay on.

Hi Lee,

I've actually subscribed to the Skype out service, thanks to our very own
Don Shaw turning me on to it.

I now have a world plan with them, where I can call most cell phones and
most land lines in over 36 different countries, including Mexico, Guam and
Puerto Rico for only 9.99 per month, or 99 dollars a year.

I can even call my relatives in Portugal and England, or any one of the
other 34 countries, and talk for an unlimited amount of time, or until I'm
blue in the face.

Magic jack is available here, but don't quote me on that.

Local providers of phone service do have unlimited plans for as much as 39
dollars, and as little as 20 dollars per month, but I can get that and more
for less than 10 bucks per month with Skype.

I can also pay a bit extra and get a telephone number provided with my
subscription, so, as you can see, Skype is it for me.

I've even bought a cordless Skype phone to go with my service that I bought
from Best Buy, and it's a dual mode phone, meaning that it will do, both
internet calls and regular land line phone calls.

You can even link the two calls from the two different sources together.

I wish the microphone on the phone was a bit better, and I may actually get
a better unit in the future, but for now, this is all I need.

I should also mention that you get voicemail with this service, and the
program is actually accessible with Jaws scripts or Window Eyes scripts.

I also believe that there is a Linux version you can download, but again,
don't quote me on that.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] using a cable phone

2009-02-20 Thread Victor

Hi Betsy,

I believe that Lee is referring to the make of the network modem/router
combo that the cable company provides it's subscribers for internet access.

It's actually called a 3Wire modem/wireless router combo, and it houses both
a modem and internet network wireless/hard wired router with four ports.

Not literally a 3 wire unit.

Hope this makes sense.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] using a cable phone

2009-02-20 Thread Betsy Whitney
Aloha Lee,
I have my phone through my cable company and it has been fairly
reliable. I do have another phone in the house that is with the local
phone company because it is a business phone and our cable company
only provides residential lines.

I don't have anything resembling a little silver box on my system. I
only have the modem that does have three wires, one that goes to the
phone, one that goes to the cable coming into the house, and a power
cord. I have learned that if I am having trouble with my phone, I can
unplug the power cord for about 30 seconds, plug it back in, wait
about a minute, and that usually fixes the problem.

Yes, I thought that was a well stated and thought provoking rant,
congratulations...

[BlindHandyMan] using a cable phone

2009-02-19 Thread Lee A. Stone

In recent months Ray, betsy and Lenny have posted inferior products
coming mostly out of China. I have found this same problem here in my
house trying to maintain , with the cable company, the use of a cable
phone. I have talked to David and others who have cable phones and they
have no problem. Not sure if my own cable company has just bought the
cheapest crap on the market but case in point is " that silver box,
you know the one" don't you just hate that , if you cannot see black and
white or the end of your nose that you and I are going to know about
that silver box location. Thru many many home visits by cable vision
techs I now know that the silver box. which has a three wire connection
, is a part of the telephone relay connection. this little silver box
feels like a 9 volt battery but maybe a bit wider but not much taller.
when I get or have a weak signle . they, the cable company want me to
unplug the silver box and wait 30 seconds and then plugh it back. in.
Now keep in mind they are watching what I do from their office computer
and sometimes watching me right here in the house. the last time they
were in person replacing the silver box they opened three plastic
packages before they found one that worked and showed a good wave
length back inside their office and on the cable techs devices.
Interesting. then they detect a modem problem but they ae not so easy in
passing out a new cable /phone modem , but again, they come from China
packed in the USA and inside China. I guess I am telling you all of
this so next time you talk to a tech on the phone about your high speed
computer and or your cable phone and that service tech in a office
asks you to test that silver box. " you know the one setting on top of
your monitor.Education, education, education is what we need to do as
blind handymen and women to let some service techs that we are not
exactly stupid but only blind. Now how was that for a happy rant ? Lee
