Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question to Electricians on this List
actually there is a sonic difference in high end applications. re: 2% and 4% silver/tin regularly used. But the temp shock aspects I didn't know. Disimilar metals can make it interesting. Rhodium is a nasty plating to which to attempt soldering, a tin/silver/copper solder seems to work well. thanks On Tue, 28 Apr 2009, Tom Fowle wrote: > Silver solder melts at a much higher temp than tin/led and creates a much > stronger bond mechanically. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question to Electricians on this List
Temperature can be one consideration, but the main reason for using the silver in a c work is its ability to withstand the greater pressures. Its cost would keep me from using it for everyday electrical soldering which is usually mechanically sound first and uses the solder for the best connection and reduce any corrosion inside a joint if it is just wrapped. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question to Electricians on this List
Silver solder melts at a much higher temp than tin/led and creates a much stronger bond mechanically. It'll stand the temp shock of refrigeration much better than tin/led You wouldn't use silver for audio cause it's more expensive and there is no point, unless maybe in a very corosive environment. Also, some metals, Re: brass, don't take tin/led and need silver to alloy with. Tom

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question to Electricians on this List
I do seem to recall that european fuses may be "blow' at rated current and U.S. are'flow through" at rated current. changing fuse ratings should make no difference to how the device operates, fuse resistance is minuscual compaired to the impedance of the device. Reminds me of a guy who called us wanting to know what kind of solder to use on his vaccuum tube projects so as to get less joint resistance. Since tubes are high impedance devices, joint resistance is totally irrellivant, but he just wouldn't believe, or maybe one should say he "wanted to believe" against facts. Tom
Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question to Electricians on this List
your notes here are quite interesting Tom. I had some replacement fuses for some audio gear. (10A 250w and 6A 250W) and they were blowing readily. I asked the gent who sold them to me, what might be the reason as the amps were not doing harder work with any new speakers. he said that German fuses are "blow at" and our fuses were "travel through". Saying what you are below, but indicating that not all are so defined. i went back to the US and had him order the next size up in the German and I can change the without any noticable difference under heavy loads. No extra heat at the fins. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question to Electricians on this List 4 wire to 3
On a normal breaker panel, every other breaker is the same polarity and will give a zero voltage reading to each other. In a three phase panel every third breaker is the same. The reason for it is any one single breaker is 120 volt usually. A double 220 volt breaker can be plugged in anywhere and have 220 volt. On a three phase panel a three phase breaker can be plugged in anywhere and you will have three phase power. There are some that aren't, but they center in commercial applications. ..bob [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Problem might be that you don't know for sure that the 2 120 volt lines are actually from the two sides of the service. There may be an easier way, but I think you'll need an A.C. voltmeter that goes at least to 250 volts to chec between the two hots to see that they are actually 240 volts apart. They could be just 2 120s from two breakers on the same side of the service. Tom

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Question to Electricians on this List 4 wire to 3
What Max told you earlier is basically true. But do not assume anything. Check between the two hot wires to be sure you have 240 volts between them. They could have been hooked to the same phase for some unknown reason. The one thing I learned many times over about electricity is check, check, check try it and then check again. Just to make some things clear is the white of the three wire cable on the tub grounded to metal or just running to one side of a pump motor and or controller? If yes then the fourth wire, green or bare from the source will hook to any metal and or the metal water pipes in the tub. The green, grounding wire shall never carry current, unless there is a fault. The white carries the other side of 120 volt loads. I don't see a problem with this. Oh course in the U S we normally start at 15 and then go to 20, 25, 30 etc unless someone is using the old fuse stats which are about extinct. Charlie, making that hook-up is bad news unless both the 120 volt lines are connected to a single double breaker. Having two power lines to anything is bad news. People get hunt that way or worse. ...bob [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
