With a little practice and the right files, one can bring on a good edge, but
it all depends on the tool you are sharpening. My double bladed ax I use a
medium file first and than the fine file. On others, like my woodmate, I just
use a wet stone. On my knifes I just use a steel.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] sharpening tools

2007-04-17 Thread Dan Rossi
I was just poking around on Lee Valley and am wondering what the Veritas
Sharpening system looks like. It is two parts, a honing guide and an
angle jig. So, does this just sit above, or in front of, a sharpening
stone? Does it look like a blind person could use it? It talks about
sighting along a registration line to keep a narrow blade properly
aligned.

Has anyone used this system?

thanks.

2007-04-17 Thread woodworkingfortheblind
Here is a list of articles dealing with sharpening that have been recorded on
CDs by Woodworking for the Blind over the past year.

Magazine CD 1 has an article on Sharpening Machines from Fine Woodworking 182,
p. 38.

Magazine CD 4 has Sharpen With Sandpaper from Fine Woodworking 184, p. 63.

Magazine CD 12 has Keeping Tools Sharp from Fine Woodworking 189, p. 80.

Magazine CD 7 has Bowl Gouge Sharpening from American Woodworker 123, p. 78.

Magazine CD 9 has Slow Speed Grinders from American Woodworker 124, p. 62.

Magazine CD 10 has Tune-up an Old Chisel from American Woodworker 125, p. 79.

Magazine CD 14 has Reshaping the Skew Chisel from American Woodworker 127, p.
40 as well as Jet's Slow Speed Wet Sharpener from Woodcraft 13 dated January,
2007, p. 67 and Pinnacle Honing Guide from Woodcraft 14 dated March, 2007, p.
66.

Magazine CD 7 has Sharpening Drill Bits from Woodsmith 160, p. 12.

I cite the magazine name, issue number and page number to help in finding the
article on the CD.

The book Complete Manual of Woodworking issued on Book CDs 3 and 4 also has
sections on sharpening which are fairly general in approach.

Any member joining after the time a CD was issued can request back copies so
that you have a complete library. Any blind woodworker not yet a member can
join by contacting [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hope this helps.

2007-04-17 Thread woodworkingfortheblind
Usually this is done by hand, first tilting the gouge to get the proper bevel
angle and then smoothly rolling the gouge across the grinder at the same angle
to sharpen it from edge to edge. It takes a lot of practice.

There are newer tools like the Wolverine sharpening jig that enable you to set
the angle and easily roll it from side to side while maintaining the angle.

Go to www.leevalley.com or woodcraft.com and look up Wolverine.

Probably the very best way is with a pond of variously graded water stones
and a couple of hones, fine oil stones and maybe a diamond hone. As you gain
skill you may want one or mor of those bevel jigs to guide the blade while
grinding and later honing a very fine edge.

There is the Scary system (spelling uncertain) which uses sand paper stuck
to very flat surfaces like plate glass, this is pretty cheap and can grind a
  well formed edge.

Finally I am very impressed with what I have seen in the new generation of
slow speed wet grinders. Tormek was probably the first and remains the most
expensive but now Delta and Jet have similar units quite a bit cheaper and
arguably as good and maybe better. These have a 2 inch wide grinding wheel
which turns relatively slowly in a bath of water and which can be finished
to grind quite aggressively or finished for a much finer grind and on the
other side is a leather wheel which is used with honing compound for a
really rather wonderful finish. There is quite a bit of learning with these
too, a number of jigs and fixtures for holding various blades from chisels
to plane blades or jointer knives and even specially shaped turning chisels.

A collection of decent stones gets pretty expensive and so does the Tormek,
even the Jet is about three hundred dollars US for the basic unit and so far
I haven't found a Canadian supplier for it.

Lee Valley has quite a collection of water stones, probably not the cheapest
place to buy but the quality is high, you will have good suppliers up in
Newcastle, a specialty shop I am sure and probably not all that cheap. The
methods using sand paper are cheap and apparently quite efficient but both
are hand grinding and will take some patience if you have to remove any
amount of steel for removing any nicks.

The high speed grinders not only spray sparks which pose a fire hazard
particularly for the blind although of the fires I am aware of, none were
caused by a blind person, the heat can easily destroy the temper and soften
the tool steel. you need to quench frequently and that makes relocating the
tool on the rest a bit more challenging.

I can look for more information on the "scary" system, I know that Larry is
familiar with it and of course we have Rae who is becoming expert in the
research department, maybe there already is something up there on the Site
on it I haven't been there for a while.

  Hope this helps.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] sharpening tools

2007-04-17 Thread Tom Fowle
Carl,
look on the blindhandyman text page, there are some articles there
about sharpening.

Unless a tool is very badly damaged you don't need power.

There are a variety of stones etc. available and guides to help you hold
tool blades at correct angles.

Then there is the ssystem where you put fine grade
sandpaper on a sheet of glass and sharpen against that. Very interesting
because
glass is very flat and makes sure you get a flat surface to work against which
is vital.

Dry grinders are a poor idea because it is too easy
to get the tool too hot and detemper it.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] sharpening tools

2007-04-17 Thread Dale Leavens
I haven't used it and I don't own it and if you worry about sighting along
this or that then you will never get anything because that is the language
of the optically enabled. This too is one of the reasons I have not yet
acquired those jigs. It is my feeling though that for all the fuss these
things are really a lot more approximate than we would be lead to believe.
The real trick is to keep the bevel constant so you don't get a convex bevel
which would make the actual edge of attack way too great. Obviously, if a
plane blade isn't very close to square to it's edge it will be more
difficult to line up in the shoe but even a square blade needs alining in
the plane which also, theoretically requires sighting along the shoe and
there has never been a blind person do that ever in history.

When I worked in Dawson Creek I once had this old Sudatenland German patient
who came to canada just before the war, there were a number of them settled
in the area. I was complaining about having chipped a plane blade. He told
me to bring it in next time and he brought a hand crank grinding wheel which
he clamped to the edge of my desk and promptly ground the chip out of the
blade, touched up another one and a pair of chisels and then honed them
perfect with an oil stone about two and a half inches by maybe 4. He gave me
the stone and I use it still.

My point here is that I well remember my father having a wheel like that
many years ago and me trying to use it. You only have your left hand for
guiding the blade against the wheel which, doubtless is a little easier if
you can see but you are only estimating the angle even if you can see
because you can't observe it from overhead and your right hand is busy
cranking.

I am betting that a reasonably sensitive touch would aline the edge close
enough as doesn't matter. Setting the angles to precisely 35 or 40 or 25 on
the gauge might be more problematic but with the set-up blocks as reference
one would be within a couple of degrees dead reckoning.

The masters of course do it without a jig by touch and claim absolute
accuracy and maybe they are right. I am pretty sure most of us could do it
too only we don't have the instruction or the reliable means of
verification.

Besides, we are all waiting for you to buy, test and inform us first.

I am thinking I am going to buy me either a Tormek or a Jet. The Tormek rep
offered to take a day and teach me how to use the Tormek down in Kitchener
which might have been sales talk but I have thought it might be interesting
to get a couple of hotel rooms and get a few of us together for a sharpening
lesson and maybe over to Stratford for some Shakespeare some week-end this
summer or fall.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] sharpening tools

2007-04-17 Thread Ralph Supernaw
Hi,

I have the Veritas Sharpening system and use it. I need sighted help to set
the honing guide for a specific angle. Were I organized I'd brialle the
angles for each setting and then could do it myself. I have sharpened at
least a couple chistles by guessing at the angle. But, with a new chissle I
would want to set it at a particular angle to save time sharpening. Once
the angle is set and the blade mounted in the honing guide the rest is just
"back and forth" until you can shave your arm.

I like the feature that allows you to set a micro bevel by rotating a knob
without removing the blade.

The results I have had using the guide are far superior to that I have
achieved freehand. This is also true for my brother who is sighted.

Ralph

Thank you for this Ralph.

Do you think you would be able to set the angle on a new chisel by resting
it in the guide and feeling when the bevel is flat on your stone then
setting the guide?

Not having had one in my hands yet I have no idea if this is practical.

The bevel on a plane blade is probably too thin but maybe a chisel.

The angle depends on the length of the blade protruding from the unit, and I
believe that there is a scale included with the instructions. For example a
one inch length, gives you a 25 degree! I haven't use it for a while, so I
don't remember the scale!

Here is a list of articles dealing with sharpening that have been recorded on
CDs by Woodworking for the Blind over the past year.

Magazine CD 1 has an article on Sharpening Machines from Fine Woodworking

RE: [BlindHandyMan] sharpening tools

2007-04-18 Thread Ralph Supernaw
The honing guide has a rectangular tongue that mounts to the front during
setup. There is a tab that moves up and down the tongue. When the blade is
placed in the honing guide the side of the blade is placed against a raised
edge of the tongue. The end of the blade rests against the tab. The closer
the tab is to the honing guide the greater the sharpening angle. This means
that the tongue extends past the end of the blade being sharpened. Once the
blade is secured in the honing guide the tongue with its attached tab is
removed to expose the blade for sharpening.

This process allows the blade to be positioned tactally. It does not allow
you to set the end of the blade against the sharpening stone when mounting
it in the honing guide. I have used angle setup blocks from Lee Valley to
determine the angle of a blade bevel so I know what angle to use when
sharpening. One of the benefits of the setup process is that the blade is
straight so the sharpening does not result in a skewed edge.
