He's got a long way to go to prove that to me. You can put up gaudy
numbers and win a lot of regular season games (Dan Marino and the
young John Elway) but you don't achieve greatness in football in the
regular season. Montana, the mature Elway and Brady are head and
shoulders above Manning by that measure.

Keep in mind that Elway (and Steve Young) had the "never won the big one"
monkey on their backs, too, until they won them. And I'd consider Marino
one of the all-time top QB's despite his lack of a SB victory. I don't
think a quarterback absolutely needs to have tremendous postseason success
to be considered great (though it helps!), but perhaps it is a requirement
to be considered "the greatest".

It's just that there's way, way too many other factors to winning in
football to make SB victories a strict criteria for judging QB greatness.
The surrounding team and coaching makes a huge difference. And there's a
least a few of SB-winning QB's I can think of that certainly don't rank that
high in the "greatness"scale.

I believe Peyton will eventually get his championship(s) and that criticism
will disappear, but I don't think it's useful to annoint him (or any other
active player) the greatest, until their career is over, or they have proven
themselves so dominant in all aspects for such a long time that they could
retired immediately and still be worthy of consideration. A recent ESPN
article (
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=smith_michael&id=2646827
)
pronounces that 10 years from now, the greatest QB debate will focus purely
on Manning vs Brady. Way too soon to say that, IMHO. There's too many
things that can happen between now and then. Remember that Drew Bledsoe was
considered a lock for the Hall of Fame earlier in his career.

As for the Colts-Pats game, I'm a Pats fan, and I think the Pats will run
well against the Colts, but I think Bellichik's anti-Manning voodoo has worn
off and Manning's going to do some serious scoring of his own, with the
result being something like the Colts-Denver game. I also wonder if this
will be something of a "Milton Berle" game (if you get the Bill Simmons
reference) where both teams might want to hold something in reserve to have
some surprises left if/when they meet again in the playoffs. Bragging rights
and possibly home field advantages are on the line for this game, but I'm
sure both coaches have their eye on on the bigger prize.

This is an interesting article and poll about an editorial that's about to
be released. Too bad that ousting someone like Rumsfeld couldn't be done by
a popular vote.

The online poll:

Should Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld be removed from his position,
whether by resignation or dismissal?

44203 responses

87% - Yes, he has lost all credibility and the ability to lead and has
failed in Iraq and Afghanistan. He must go.

13% - No, he has ably overseen wars in Iraq and Afghanistan while working on
overhauling the armed forces. He should stay.

Week 9 NFL Picks

2006-11-04 Thread John D. Giorgis
A decent enough 9-5 last week, but still five games back of my Dad -
whom I'll be joining in Buffalo this week for Bills-Packers

Houston at NY Giants - Lock of the week. the Giants' passrush aught to
terrorize whomever the Texans trot out at QB. Pick: GIANTS

New Orleans at Tampa Bay - Tampa Bay has played incredibly tough on
defense for rookie QB Bruce Gradkowski, and the Saints have had a little
whiff of having played over their heads so far this season, particularly
on defense. Pick: BUCS

Green Bay at Buffalo - I'm going with the "bounce-back" theory on this
one. The Bills have lost three straight, and are playing at home after
a bye week, and the Packers have somehow managed two in a row. The
Bills are simply more desperate. Pick: BILLS

Dallas at Washington - I thought my pick of the Panthers last week was
sitting pretty when they went up 14-0 on the Panthers - and then Tony
Romo made me look silly. I'm just still not a believer, though, and
even though the Redskins are without Santana Moss, they're coming off a
bye and at home.. On paper they almost shouldn't win, so maybe the
Cowboys make me look silly, but I just think that Joe Gibbs makes
something happen with the team having their backs against the wall.
Pick: REDSKINS

Miami at Chicago - Over the decades, the Miami Dolphins have often been
the team to stymie a bid for an undefeated season - so there's a
tantalizing upset special here.. Which is actually about the only reason
I can think of as to why this game even has a chance to be competitive.
Pick: BEARS

Tennessee at Jacksonville - So the Jags lose to Houston and go in to
Philly and hand the Eagles their third straight loss.Go figure!
Pick: JAGUARS (I guess.)

Atlanta at Detroit - After that big win over Cincinnati, the Falcons are
for real, and the Lions don't seem to have the sort of pass rush that
has been Atlanta's kryptonite as of late. Pick: FALCONS

Cincinnati at Baltimore - The Bengals just have too much talent on
offense to continue to stay in a slump forever, and I definitely don't
think that the Ravens are as good as they looked in New Orleans last
week. Pick: BENGALS

Kansas City at St. Louis - What Herman Edwards is doing with Damon Huard
in KC gets my vote for "Coach of the Year" - I mean, putting up an
offensive explosion on a Seattle defense that was in the Super Bowl last
year??? Good grief!Pick: CHIEFS

Minnesota at San Francisco - I have this inkling that the Patriots
really exposed the Vikings last Monday night, and I think that their
game won't translate well onto the grass at Candlestick.Sure, the
49ers were down 41-0 at the half last week, but when has that stopped
me? Pick: 49ERS UPSET SPECIAL)

Denver at Pittsburgh - Something is wrong with Mr. Roethlisberger, and I
don't seem him able to do what Peyton Manning just did to the Denver
secondary. Pick: BRONCOS

Cleveland at San Diego - Marty Schottenheimer continues to roll to the
playoffs. Pick: CHARGERS

Indianapolis at New England - Amidst all the talk about the "instant
classic" of last week's Colts-Broncos game, something has been lost -
the Indy was completely unable to stop anybody on the ground, and only
won because of a masterful performance by someone who will someday be
regarded as the best QB in NFL History. I somehow don't think that
Bill Belichick failed to notice. Corey Dillon and Laurence Maroney,
start your engines. Pick: PATRIOTS

Oakland at Seattle - This is probably where the Raiders and their
two-game win streak to return to par. Pick: SEAHAWKS
