Calling Vernor Vinge! Sandia National Labs -

2007-10-22 Thread PAT MATHEWS
Sandia National Labs announced it is cutting off all access to it's
collection of hard-copy content to save money and re-engineer library
services for the electronic age. Eventually (note the disjuncture!) the
people will have access to a fully electronic library.

Jean, I'll send you the entire story clipped from the newspaper. The
Albuquerque Journal.

The Sandia Labs library

2007-10-22 Thread PAT MATHEWS

Sandia couldn't keep the hard-copy library open until they had the
electronic one in place? Usually when you replace one thing with another,
you allow for some interim coverage. I'm taking your old coat; eventually
you'll get a new one. Meanwhile, you can freeze. Gaah.

Those shredders make a helluva lot of noise, and they probably need
to correct the scans for security purposes before releasing them
in electronic form.

I did not realize that Toyota had a 5000 volt electric motor in their
vehicle! (I did not know that was possible.)

The current Prius have a 273-volt system (228 1.2-volt cells) and a 50
kilowatt engine (when it is producing its full 67 hp). I couldn't find
anything that describes the battery system in terms of kw/hrs, but I infer
from what I've read that it's around 2 kw/hrs.

I was surprised to see that it's only 67 hp... I drove my mother's Prius a
while ago and it seemed zippier than that. Lots of torque, I guess.

Thanks, it is almost exactly the anniversary of the
2003 Cedar Fire.

We've taken the younger two plus pets to grandma.

Watching closely. Avoiding falling ash. Horrible air
quality. But wind
directions seem to favor us. A very bad santa ana is
being opposed by an offshore push right over us.
What drama!

Forced to prepare, though. Small but real chance of
total evacuation. Jim Burns paintings Hugos and kid
mementos and
photos... what a lot of stuff you notice when you have
to...

are working together.

Oh, you're out there! Ouch...

After the Cerro Grande fire up in Los Alamos some years ago, I bought
soft-sided cat carriers for my fellows and made them as attractive as
possible in hopes they'd sleep in them. I keep them on waist-high bookcases
one near each dor. That way in case we have to evacuate, packing them up
will be a lot easier.

Best of luck and may you and yours escape the fire.

Those of us up in the northern part of the state are okay... the red flag
warning goes to an area about 30 miles south of San Jose (Silicon Valley).
But this is the time of year when we've had our worst fires, too.

so. cal. fires

2007-10-22 Thread jon louis mann
i just finished watching one of the most beautiful sunsets of the year.
here at the beach in santa monica it is calm and peaceful. some of my
friends are not so lucky. 250,000 acres so far and 250, 000 evacuees.
two old friends for forty years had to abandon their eco-home in the
malibu hills. their daughter, who i used to bounce on my knee, had to
evacuate their terrified horses and pets in topanga canyon. my son's
cousins, aunt and grandparents all had to leave their home in poway.
another friend in san bernadino hasn't answered my calls. the hills
are on fire and i can smell the ashes. i hope david doesn't lose his home
