coating and tape and peal apart. But with the spray alone (or Coating) good
luck removing the connector. Same goes with the 2228 tape. It forms a great
seal around  the connector, but if applied directly, with out a wrap of 88
first, is difficult to remove after baking in the sun for a year or more. Since
most hams want to be able to work on their antenna systems, being able to
remove an antenna connection is a plus. On commercial sites, it is not as
important to allow for future antenna change, so waterproofing is some what
different depending on antenna , connector, feedline and such.

I’ve been thinking about the rubber spray material that supposedly waterproofs
everything wondering if I sprayed a dose of that on a connector if it would
stay dry. Been thinking about putting a connector together and spraying it and
spending some time in some some water maybe some salt water so I could read any
change for the new meter also look for loss of have a throughput or increased
loss using the antenna analyzer should. When I first got into commercial radio
some tower hands taught me their method that was the wrap the connector with a
layer of upside down tape so that it wouldn’t stick and become gooey then the
layer of Butor rubber each one getting a little bigger than a layer of
electrical tape again this time gooey side down and then cover that with
something called the scotch  liquid tape. Most of the connectors I seen that
were in the field for a while however the liquid Cape and tape at most of the
connectors I seen that were in the field for a while however the liquid tape it
cracked badly and wasn’t performing well but I’ve never had a white connector
in many years of dealing with towers.

In case you havent, a tape such as this
https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/p/d/b5456/

in Houston is necessary or your coax will go bad very very quick. Tape it
around the PL connectors. There are other kinds, but this one you can find at
Lowes or HD pretty easy.

Re: [BVARC] Dipole - one day ok, next day high SWR

2022-10-14 Thread Shannon Tassin via BVARC
All,

Thanks for the advice.

When I left it yesterday, my feed line coming out of my soffit was run down
over a metal roof and then laid a bit over the ground before going up to the
antenna. I hadn’t pulled the slack back into the attic yet. It’s good LMR 400
direct burial coax so I didn’t think anything of it.

Later this morning, I went into the attic and pulled the slack out such that it
no longer goes near the metal roof nor touches the ground. Magically, that
fixed the problem. Maybe it jarred some water loose also.

If this spurs any thoughts, let me know, otherwise I’ll get some of the
wrapping suggested (I had used silicone coax wrap) and rework my connection
wrapping.

Thanks,
Shannon

[BVARC] Parks On The Air @ Brazos Bend State Park 10/16/202

2022-10-14 Thread Kori Rahman via BVARC
All,

Anthony (W5LIC) and I (Kori, WX5KR) will once again be going to Brazos Bend
State Park this Sunday (*October 16th*) doing Parks On The AIr (POTA),
We've discussed this on the air this week and I want to formally invite
anyone who is interested to come by. We've had several inquiries about
visiting with us, so if you have time please come by between *3pm and 7pm*.
We will probably be set up in the Elm Lake part of the park. We will
be on *146.520
MHz simplex* if you would like to reach out to us while in the park for
directions.

Some important details:

   - Park access is $7. Ask for a day use area pass.
   - *IF* you have a Texas State Park Pass, then admission for the day is
   *FREE*.
   - You can operate with a Technician class license on 10m, however 10m is
very spotty so be aware of that.
   - We will have at least 3 HF radios that you can use if you don't have
your own. So all you need to bring is yourself, some water, and maybe some
   snacks.
   - If you'd like to bring your own radio, we have a few antennas you can
use and the appropriate filters. But again, you don't *need *to bring
   any equipment.
   - Of course, you do not have to operate the radios, you can just come
out for a fun time with your fellow hams.
   - 10 contacts are all that are required to "activate" the park. You can
log with paper, or with any apps you prefer (we recommend the HAMRS App
   )

*Again it's October 16th 2022, 3pm-7pm*
*Brazos Bend State Park*

*21901 FM 762Needville, TX 77461*

As before, if you can't make this event, there will be more to come. It's a
lot of fun, and we hope to see you out there Sunday or any other time we're
out at the parks.

Thanks and 73!

Re: [BVARC] Dipole - one day ok, next day high SWR

2022-10-14 Thread Robert Polinski via BVARC
Sprays, coatings etc. are fine if you plan on never taking the connector
loose. If you apply a layer of 88 tape first, fine, spray and coat as much as
you want. If you want to take the joint apart, just use a knife & cut thru the
coating and tape and peal apart.

I have been thinking about the rubber spray material. The fellow that catch up
on the bottom of the boat and replaces it with the window screen and then
sprays it. Wonder what would happen if I sprayed a PO 259 both sides with it.
I’ve been thinking about sacrificing One connector pair and spray it then maybe
soak it in some salt water for a while they just accelerate things watching it
with a Ohm meter and cable lost off of my antenna analyzer. When I first got
into commercial radio some tower hands taught me to wrap a connector with that
scotch tape probably the good stuff with the sticky side out so that the
covering did not adhere tightly to the connector making it easier to remove
after the layer of sticky stuff out then a layer of butyl rubber molding around
it followed by another layer of scotch tape this time sticky stuff in. Then
there’s a product from scotch called liquid tape they would always paint it
with liquid tape. Most of the connectors I seen that were in the field for a
length of time though liquid tape seem to have cracked it was no longer
effective. However however I never had a wet connector in many years. By the
way the connection set for an Andrew half inch line includes a little tube of
silicone grease to be left on the inside of the connector when you’re putting
it together.

last time it wouldn’t tune on 40 & 30 - I thought it had to do with being to
close to the house which is why I moved it. I sent it back to the person that
made it and they checked it out and sent it back to me.

Thanks,
Shannon
