[BVARC] FD

Richard:

Helped Quack to get all stuff in his car. Took out the last garbage bag (for
we must leave the place “clean”). Took down the BARC banner and I have it.

Locked the park up. Will have to let the rental company truck in tomorrow when
they call me and tell me when they are heading to the park.

Otherwise, all is good and had a fun time. Congrats on a great FD !

We may want to convene a committee of interested people to talk about what is
proposed. There are so many variables, not to mention the costs to construct
and run a digital transmitter. Also, who has digital receivers? Currently
there are limited AM shortwave receivers for that industry is dying (like the
majority of the over-the-air broadcast stations due to the ubiquitous and
massively increasing wireless internet)..

2 Nights Before Christmas

Ron Litt, K5HM

Two nights before Christmas and up at the shop,

Santa was checking his sleigh for the big hop.

His APRS was already on line,

So, the gang down at NORAD could track him 5 - 9.

The new HF rig was tuned up on 20.

He knew that 100 watts would be plenty.

"I'll be on VOX for this flight", he said in his head.

I have to be able to look straight ahead."

So, sideband it is for the big night tomorrow.

I hope the CW guys won't be too full of sorrow.

The two-meter rig was already encoded,

With every repeater that could be uploaded.

They'll know when Santa's near; they won't be surprised,

And make sure the kids have all closed their eyes.

He stopped for a moment then gave a big start,

When he suddenly realized he was missing a part.

"Of course!", he shouted. "it's my laptop PC !

I won't get far without it on my knee."

"It's got my log and my list and my flight plan too,

Though I always have Rudolph to guide me through."

He pulled out his wallet once more to check,

That his FCC license was there for the trek.

"Well, it looks like I'm ready", they heard him declare,

"I'll be single op unassisted for the entire affair."

"I better get some rest now before the big night,

So, I can be ready for the long flight."

And they heard him exclaim as he walked off to bed,

"CQ, CQ, CQ . . . QRZed?"

Merry Christmas Y'all

Think it is backwards standard 1/4 wire rope breaking strength is 7,000 lbs and
3/16 is 4200 for 7x19 galvanized. You can buy cable at Home Depot or Lowes
and make your own cables. You could try Alps Wire Rope or Southwest Wire Rope
but I'd suspect they are premium priced. You might check with Bill Cordell to
see if he knows anyone

Has anyone recabled an HG70HD? Can you give me some information and tips please?

I found the following information in the manual. I am hoping someone can
confirm these dimensions:

Item 4 p/n 690346: CABLE 1/4” x 59-1/2

Item 5 p/n 690198: CABLE 1/4” x 20-1/2

Item 6 p/n 690197: CABLE 3/16 x 20-1/2

I called MFJ. “Tom” told me the cables are: 1/4” 4200 lbs breaking strength;
3/16” 7000 lbs breaking strength.

Now I need to find a shop that can build the cables or find someone who may
have these parts. Any suggestions or recommendations? I live SW of Houston,
Texas. I am also attaching all the information I have on hand so far. I am also
copying the manual and drawings sent by MFJ as reference.

1. Setting up one or more stations at the FD site to operate remotely.
(Scheduling using real-time Google Sheets)
2. Setting up one or more member stations to operate remotely using
club call. (Scheduling using real-time Google Sheets)
3. All stations operating separately with their own calls to combine as
an aggregate club score
4. Member stations operating with their own call with new class (1X)
[not sure if we could get ARRL and logging software to go this way]
5. Other ideas???

It was decided to hold several Zoom meetings to decide a path forward. First
one will likely be next Saturday.

Thank you ALL for a great response during Hamfest. We signed up 22 people to
operate during FD. Some experts and some newbies.

A lot of you commented about learning from experts during FD. That is a great
idea. We can do this by including some training in N1MM and K3 radios before
start of FD. Then, during FD, we can let the people listen in on the CW QSOs.
And, for SSB operation, we can assist by typing in the information in N1MM to
help the operator.

FD is a great time for learning and mentoring others. Come learn all about
putting up antennas, setting up the rigs and operating. Let us not forget about
tear down after FD. We will need your help.

Please spread the word around about our Quad Club Mega Field Day. More
information about FD will follow in the future.

For Field Day next year we will (or should):

1. Have Jeff Hoke from CenterPoint Energy come out several months before
FD and then again several weeks before.
2. Locate the main antennas East<->West of each other to minimize
interstation interference.
3. Route digital feed lines separate from CW feed lines.
4. Investigate the use of some portable A/C units.
5. Investigate the use of coax stubs to further reduce interstation
interference.
6. KEEP THE SAME COOK! (Great job on food!)
7. KEEP THE SAME NETWORK GUY! (Great job on computers, networking,
software, etc. We are really lucky to have you, Glen!)
8. Suggest either TDXS or BVARC purchase a new 2-el 40m beam.
9. Put CW antennas on highest manlifts.
10. Investigate the use of a manual switch to switch radios from mains to
generator (to eliminate last minute confusion…or) switch radios to generator
well before 1pm.
11. Make sure GOTA station operators know the rules.

I thought this was one of our best Field Days yet, due to the new location
(irrespective of noise). Hopefully we can work out the noise issues with
CenterPoint or fix whatever is making the noise in the house. The house and the
land were a big improvement over what we have had in the past. The
participation by other clubs (especially KARS) was a big plus. We may need to
make some more rules, especially with respect to moving headsets around in the
SSB room…or make sure all are setup the same way. We also need a greater push
with the SSB operators regarding operating technique to maximize rate (teach
them to run).

I am also dumbfounded and extremely disappointed in the lack of participation
by other TDXS members. I suggest we make a push again for next year, but we
need to start six months in advance so that they do not make other plans first.

I know I have other thoughts and will express them as soon as they come to the
front of my mind.

Alas, no luck, but she did sign in!!

I did not do much of the take down, except move some tables and chairs, as my

approximately 6 of us in attendance, although I could be wrong on that number
and just missed folks who came out on Sunday morning.

Overall evaluation of the QUAD club FD would have to be 4+ out of 5. Great
location, great teamwork and great people. Most importantly, the bands opened
up on Sunday for a great ending. 3,000 QSOs considering that we had high noise
on 40 and 80 meters and no propagation on 15 and 10 on Saturday, is a great
score. So, thank you to ALL the organizers and the clubs for making this very

The large first aid bag has been found. It is a long story. Only 3 things need
to be replaced to bring it up to date.

The meetings are behind us and the event is just down the road. The last three
most important things are left:

1. Everyone that would like to operate needs to sign up on the list on the
BVARC web site.

2. Invite anyone you can think of. The more the merrier.

3. Talk the event up – on the repeaters, on HF, even at work on the
elevator. The more the merrier?

If you would like to volunteer, contact either myself or Scott Medbury and let
us know.

Also, a few items are missing from the warehouse:

1. The First Aid kit/bag

2. The BVARC banner

3. The BVARC flag

If you know where the missing items are, please let someone on the BOD know.

Hope to see everyone at Field Day!

Re: [BVARC] [tdxs-list] H.R.4986 - FCC Reauthorization Act of 2018

2018-03-05 Thread Bill Cordell via BVARC
I am on an HOA board. You cannot have non-technical and very focused HOA
decisionmakers have the ultimate say for any ham radio antennas. H.R.4986 -
FCC Reauthorization Act of 2018 is so ambiguous and soft spoken that an HOA can
easily do what they wish, when considering a ham radio antenna of any type.
This is not good.

This looks like it is a compromise at least in wording that gives the ham some
wiggle room whit the HOA's. Please correct me if I miss read it.

All,

This bill is to reauthorize funding for the FCC. Very likely to pass so the
FCC can operate!

Title III of this bill appears to contain language very similar to the Amateur
Radio Parity Act of 2017!!

I do not see anything I recognize as allowing "high symbol rate" modes on the
HF bands.

Below is a link to the text of the bill:
