I have these suggestions:

Better on site signage.
Better on site maps,
List of vendors,
And people working the food booth with more organization and speed.

But I was happy to see some venders with new ham product. Purchased from ABR
and HRO.

Will come back

Re: [BVARC] Good Coax?

2022-10-26 Thread Dominic Mazoch via BVARC
And I get for each of my rigs a 12-18inch M-F coax pigtail. Takes the tension
out of the rig's ANT feed. And much easier to replace the pigtail than a
connector on the rig.

On the Y FT-2980, a pigtail is really needed because of the tightness of where
the ANT port is. It has a protection ring around it. Seems Y used a Standard
commercial rig body for the 2980. But excellent radio overall in quality.

ABR can do custom cables. And Will Call Mo-Fr.

If it hasn't been shared, here's a great calculator that will give you the feed
line loss of different cables. For anything HF, for a run less than 100', I'll
tell you the standard RG-8X you can get off Amazon will suit you just fine.
I'm running less than 100W from my 991A into an off-center fed random wire
inverted V with the peak 30' off the ground, and I'm into every continent but
Antartica no sweat. I'm probably putting more energy into the dirt than in the
air, but if it works, I mean

The calculator will quickly demonstrate for VHF, RG-8X is simply not viable for
any lengthy run. UHF- forget it. You need something fatter, I recommend
ABR-400, it's a pliable, bendable competitor to LMR-400, though slightly worse
on attenuation. You won't know the difference. ABR has been really good to
me, they'll treat you really well.

Feed Line Loss Calculator:
https://www.qsl.net/co8tw/Coax_Calculator.htm

Good Coax I'm using on two different HF runs:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008APMTEW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8=1

Picture of my FT-8 propagation in June is attached. Coax runs of above product
have been up in direct weather since August of 2020.

Date: Sat, 4 Jun 2022 22:37:30 -0500

All,

Anthony (W5LIC) and I (Kori, WX5KR) will be going to Brazos Bend State Park
tomorrow (*Sunday June 5th*) doing Parks On The AIr (POTA), I know we've
shared this on the air, but I wanted to formally invite anyone who is
interested to come by. We've had several inquiries about visiting with us,
so if you have time please come by between *3pm and 7pm*. We will probably
be set up in the Elm Lake part of the park. We will be on *146.520 MHz
simplex* if you would like to reach out to us while in the park for
directions.

Some important details:

   - Park access is $7. Ask for a day use area pass.
   - *IF* you have a Texas State Park Pass, then admission for the day is
   *FREE*.
   - You can operate with a Technician class license on 10m, however 10m is
very spotty so be aware of that.
   - We will have at least 3 HF radios that you can use if you don't have
your own. So all you need to bring is yourself, some water, and maybe some
   snacks.
   - If you'd like to bring your own radio, we have a few antennas you can
use and the appropriate filters. But again, you don't *need *to bring
   any equipment.
   - Of course, you do not have to operate the radios, you can just come
out for a fun time with your fellow hams.
   - 10 contacts are all that are required to "activate" the park. You can
log with paper, or with any apps you prefer (we recommend the HAMRS App
   )

Again it's tomorrow June 5th 2022, 3pm-7pm
Brazos Bend State Park
21901 FM 762
Needville, TX 77461

Apologies for the late notice. This will *NOT *be the last email about
POTA. We plan on doing this more in the coming months to give our fellow
hams a chance to activate the park with us, learn about POTA, and how we
operate. It's a lot of fun, and we hope to see you out there tomorrow or
any other time we're out at the parks.

Thanks and 73!

*- Kori, WX5KR*

2022-05-12 Thread Dominic Mazoch via BVARC
Good idea.. Except for one thing. This makes FOUR nets that I can think of
on THE SAME DAY AT THE SAME TIME. Is it possible to spread out the start times
of thse nets over 30 minute intervals? Or is 2000 dtart time some "rule" out
there? There has been talk of a "club" of club presidents. I think this needs
to be done, and net timing needs to addressed. 73 Dominic Mazoch, N5TCB

BVARC,

Charlotte (KI5TRQ) and Henry (K5HRP) of the Brazos Valley Amateur Radio Club
are starting a new net called the QuestionAIR Net.

This net will be hosted every Tuesday at 8 PM on the 146.94 repeater (PL
Tone 167.9, - shift). It is open to any and all hams in the Greater Houston
area.

The goal of the QuestionAIR net is to ask random and thought-provoking
questions, to get fun and laid-back conversations started among hams! The
first net will be hosted by Henry on this upcoming Tuesday, May 17, so mark
your calendars! Charlotte will be hosting the following week.

We're excited for this net and hope to hear you check in!

They need to change their 2m simplex freqs...Texas is 20khz, even spaced
channels on 146 to 148 since 1985. 147.57 should be .56 or .58 .. I sent them a
recommendation they use a range instead such as 147.4 to 147.5. ChrisWB5ITT

Congratulations on the TS2000. I've had one for over 10 years now and am
extremely happy with it. My original antenna was a G5RV-Jr in the back yard in
Cypress. It was only noticed once, by a fellow ham who coincidentally was at
the front door with his daughter selling Girls Scout cookies. I'm in Richmond
now in a brand new subdivision without any trees yet. I have a Hustler 6-BTV
and have painted it black and mounted a flag on it. I've had it about 1 year
now and haven't had any comments yet from an HOA. I did apply for permission to
have the flag pole. Sheree WM5N

have the matching Kenwood power supply Kenwood KPS-15 supply. On e-ham these

I will suggest an antenna for HF (80 thru 6 meters).  I have the Buckmaster
OCF Dipole.  There are several models covering from 160 thru 6 meters, both low
and high power.  They are high quality, designed to last many years, so are
higher price than others.
If you decide to run more than 100 watts, I recommend an RF choke at both ends
of the feed line.  I run up to 1500 watts and have good results with the
Palomar Engineers Maxi-Choker MC-1-3000.

There are great major radios available for 300$ Range. When you get your feet
wet, then you’ll know what you like.

Add in a Signalink for digital.
Add in a mfj or other tuner.
Antenna is the most important piece.  Continually perfect them starting with
dipoles.

The fun begins. 

6 or 10 to 80 would suit your needs. 160 ia a ham band, but one needs the King
Ranch for an antenna.

By the time you pay for the one band rig, something like the 718 or even the
7300 comes into play.

On HF, DO NOT RUSH TO BUY. ASK. LOOK AROUND. ASK OTHER HAMS IF YOU CAN SEE
THEIR RIGS. BE CV19 AWARE

Ditto on the single band radio.

Belton Hamfest is October 2nd.

Black Friday is in November.

Pick your top 2 radios and go shopping.

Your antenna may be the bigger hurdle.

Re: [BVARC] POTA rigs?

2021-09-04 Thread Dominic Mazoch via BVARC
The old Icom 703 is good. Used it during Uri Ice Storm. Could get into DFW on
7290. Easy on battery. And has ant. impedence tuner. Size of the 706 series.
But I think it is more sturdy platform than the 705.

If I need more power, can use an Italian amp and LDG tuner. If I can make
contact on QRP, I can. If not, I can add power.

The disadvantage is having the amp and extra tuner and 2 short coax cables.
Plus 703 is out of production.

Advantages ate being modular, and the 703 sips power not transmitting

Dominic,

How does one get involved with the Elissa for MSWE? I won’t be able to do
anything this year, but would like to next year.

[BVARC] Another ship for MSWE in the Galveston Area.

2021-05-18 Thread Dominic Mazoch via BVARC
OK, good news

There will be a 4th ship on and near the Island that wil be on the air for MSWE.

N5E ELISSA will be on the air during daylight only Sat and Sun. We plan to be
on 40 and 20.

Should there be some 2m freq the TX City, BVARC and ELISSA teams can use to
prevent interference?

Also my plans have changed. Come down Friday, help set up at Seawolf. Sleep
on sub. Leave about 8AM to activate N5E. Teturn and repeat Sat to Sunday
morning.

73. And hopr HF opens up.

OK, I never heard from you about "a chat" but I guess we have more time now.
FYI, Priss is having a hip replacement on June 1.  So I can probably go there
Friday, Saturday and/or Sunday for a while, but regretfully I'm sure I won't be
able to pull a 48 hour shift.  This is a personal let down for me as MSWE is
possibly my favorite ham event of the year.
I see that MSWE is up to 62 ships and climbing.  Fantastic!
Looks like Mike Monsour isn't manning a TX City Memorial as Tidelands has it.
Has he expressed interest in being active with BVARC?
Call anytime if you wish.  Otherwise, I'll look for your rescheduled meeting
time/date.
Tnx es 73de John, K5IZO

[BVARC] That's it.....

2014-06-21 Thread Dominic Mazoch via BVARC
If you wonder why why I'm not on any list...yet, it is simple. I'm taking care
of a 86 year old relative. In relative good ship AS OF NOW. However, somebody
at that age could go south at any moment. I don't commit to something I might
have to back out on. Job and family before hobbies. Might sound old fashioned,
but.

Anyway, I do live near the original Gallery Furniture, hence anything in the
90A corridor is a bit distant. Hence I cannot come to most events.

But I am really concerned that when somebody has an idea about something, which
does not violate any federal, state local or club rules, and it challenges
people, people want to shut it down.

Hence:

1. I was planning to come after Saturday church to come to the site, and stay
and help until tear down on Sunday PM. Well, that is not coming.
2. My membership is coming due. To keep peace, and to lower blood pressures,
I am not renewing. Please take me off the club roster as of now.

Except for any e-mail from the President of the club, I will not answer.

Thank you.

I think there should be a change for FD. I know you get points for being in a
public place. But I think the change should be for 1 point for each non-ham
visitors, even if he/she does not operate the GOTA station. Then again, that
might mean having to set up at US59/I69 in those big shipping centers where it
goes under the BNSF Railway..
