Re: [BVARC] Magnum 257 radio

2024-04-10 Thread Joseph Benoit via BVARC
That CB SWR meter should be just fine. You might be surprised with the
bandwidth of that CB antenna. Of course cutting the elements by some amount
(maybe 4%; midband 27.250 v 28.400).
In my experience, I had fun working numerous stations incl Australia, New
Zealand, Japan, Alaska, Hawaii, all over Europe with a Ranger and simple
groundplane. Just study propagation on 10M. There will be super band
openings but to generalize for now: Europe in mornings, Pacific early
evening.

Re: [BVARC] CW questions

2024-01-15 Thread Joseph Benoit via BVARC
You can use your 7300. Refer to manual, wire key plug as needed for
straight key or paddle and select that key in settings. Choose break-in
(not full break-in) set code speed to whatever (10wpm?) and mode to CW. Now
set radio to any frequency outside a ham band and it will key with sidetone
without transmitting anything. For insurance, you can turn transmit power
all the way off. Have fun.

I have worked New Zealand and Australia many times lately on 10M; not every
day. Just listen, voice unmistakable, lol. Later in the day seems best and
sometimes into the dark with IC-7300 and simple ground plane antenna.
Checking the log, these as well as Japan and Alaska as well most were
between 2200 and 0100Z and were mixed CW and Phone (CW being far easier
toget a reply/hear my signal of course).

Re: [BVARC] Europe trip - radio?

2023-03-26 Thread Joseph Benoit via BVARC
Refer to ARRL website as recommended. It seems none of those countries you
mentioned permit a General Class license holder to operate in their
countries at all. So..this is great incentive to study-up and keep trying
for that Extra Class; lots of time. WIth the Extra Class ticket, merely
carrying a copy of FCC CEPT Public Notice DA-16-1048, your ORIGINAL FCC
license along with your passport and you're good to go all over Europe.
You do have to watch the band limits and privileges for the ITU Region and
specific country restrictions (if any). Have fun.

5 years, the big boys watch VRLA's closely, especially after 3 years and
will change them entirely after 3-1/2 to 4 years.
VRLA float voltage is maintained at approx 2.25 volts per cell or about
13.5V. They should both be reading close to that immediately after you pull
them out, within a few percent of each other - first clue.
What's happening is that, under load, the battery voltage
very rapidly drops to the level where the UPS shuts itself down (low
battery cutoff). This is a protection such that batteries can't be depleted
too far which will ruin them and is happening so fast you don't realize
what's going on.
Headlamp bulb is a good idea, monitor the voltage, put some kind of 5A or
so resistive load on a battery. It should drop to a value around 12V, then
very slowly decrease with the rate accelerating with time. I suspect you
will see it immediately. Make sure to clean the fan if there is one!.
A cut-sheet of a VRLA battery will show you what's going on Almost
assuredly the batteries. Data sheet of a VRLA battery from a safe site:

Re: [BVARC] Roller Inductor Question

2022-06-29 Thread Joseph Benoit via BVARC
In addition to otherwise stated by K5AMH, as the frequency gets much higher
incrementally smaller inductance value is required (wider spacing,
turns-per-inch on a given coil diameter) and smaller incremental change is
needed to fine-tune if it were.

Re: [BVARC] Ground rod

2022-05-22 Thread Joseph Benoit via BVARC
Mike. Not a direct answer to your ground rod issue BUT upon inspection,
you will find the wire feeding the outlet boxes probably does contain a
ground wire, just that they didn't have three-prong outlets or continue
grounds properly
Not sure you want to tackle this BUT it is easy just time-consuming. After
you've done a couple, maybe 15 minutes each.
Experiment with one outlet to see if you are up to it.
Look in your breaker panel and you will see a bunch of ground wires
connected to the ground buss so obviously they go SOMEWHERE (just not
terminated at the outlets and switches).
Time to replace those old outlets and switches anyway. Don't buy the
cheapest outlets, stick to made in USA; Proven to be better connections
inside.
You can fix the issue with the no-grounded outlets throughout the house and
make things much safer. Buy an outlet tester (a few bucks; three LED's) if
you don't have one. Get about 10 feet (jic) #14 solid copper wire green or
whatever color.; stripping entirely bare if not green. Have a small
assortment of appropriate wire nuts and electrical tape. Amazing how many
three pronged outlets don't have any wire to ground screw although the bare
ground wire is in there (sometimes just balled-up. Good time to identify
what breaker does what and to make sure that breaker is OFF before you
remove the outlet or light switch.. By getting to each and every outlet
and switch and make sure the ground wires that are there are all connected
to each other (may be multiple cables in same box) connect them all
together adding a pig tail if it was cut too short. Add a short pigtail to
the new 3-prong grounded receptacle. Also look at any junction boxes hiding
in the attic. Have to be patient since, in an older house like ours, one
room may feed another room and the problem won't resolve until all the
grounds are tied together. One day project does the whole house.
Good idea to take a wrap of tape around the receptacle or switch for safety
(for safety and to keep that ground wire from touching where it shouldn't.

Re: [BVARC] My first DX antenna : MFJ Ultra-Lite Off-Center Fed Dipole Antennas MFJ-2010

2022-01-01 Thread Joseph Benoit via BVARC
Hmmm. Your first antenna, experimenting... For minimal investment, most
stealth and quick install and on-the-air.., In your situation try installed
as an inverted-vee (sort-of). The highest point of house to mount the
feedpoint (chimney with screw-eye?) then bring ends down to fence-line in
either direction, using nylon rope single nail (or small marine cleat) on
your fence to pull taught and tie-off. Pattern will be weird BUT you're on
the air having fun while you plan for improvements later.

Re: [BVARC] Antenna Guidance

2021-09-29 Thread Joseph Benoit via BVARC
Hi. Keep in mind everything for most of us is ALL a compromise.
That said, If hit nearby, lightning will not just hit the HF antenna but
will couple into everything near it. The best thing you could do in this
situation is install an 8 foot rod as close to the slab as you can keeping
in mind you probably won't get it out but will have to drive it down under
grade should when you leave. I think your VHF antenna currently routes some
other way. If you can, route all l coaxes downward toward a common
protected point just under the RV inside plastic food storage box?) for
some weather protection. Put a transient suppressor on each of the two
coaxes and mount both on a small plate or simply bolt together and connect
a heavy wire from that combination to the ground rod..
That antenna is a roughly 16 foot "*no counterpoise needed*" stick with a
8:1 or 9:1 (depending where you read) unun fed with a random length of 50
ohm coax into the shack. Hmmm. The actual impedance and efficiency is all
over the place.
My opinion is the best thing you could do for your station is to raise the
antenna to clear the roofline, remove that unun and connect directly to a
remote antenna tuner (Yeasu F*C*-40/LDG/ICOM or similar) which can
weatherproof well and lay on top or secured to side of RV with a at least a
few radials thrown around. Now you have a base-tuned antenna with
efficiency increasing with frequency.
The coupler (and everything else needs grounding; a bolt to RV metal and
decent size wire down the RV to the ground rod.
Weather seal those coax connections! (Your pics).

Re: [BVARC] Anybody have a suggestion for who may be able to repair my Kenwood TS 570?

2021-06-22 Thread Joseph Benoit via BVARC
Having been in a, similar, service-based business myself, the simple fact
is that you need to have a consistent flow of sales to support salary and
overhead. That said, fewer hams are all shopping for the best price for
equipment and supplies, therefore buying from the big boys online. On top
of that, manufacturer's like to pay flat-rate for repairs, which is
normally OK and its a hard-sell to convince them to pay for those
difficult troubleshooting jobs, such as intermittent issues. So for a
brick and mortar store with fixed costs (rent and utilities, insurance),
inventory, tools, test equipment, salaries, manufacturers'-required
training, etc., its just not a viable startup for anyone today. Some of us
remember Heathkit stores, had a virtual monopoly on their gear and no
shortage of customer-built-incorrectly repairs and still closed its doors
years ago. I elected factory-authorized field-service repair for large UPS
systems.

Re: [BVARC] ELMER NEEDED

2021-06-17 Thread Joseph Benoit via BVARC
Hey Tim. Although nothing on here, I hope someone local to you has already
stepped up to the plate for you and has contacted you directly. If not,
maybe this will nudge someone ..Even an OLD, well-used mobile 2M rig and
even a simple antenna will be a dramatic improvement; perhaps someone has
lying around surplus and can loan you (?). That Baofeng will quickly
discourage your ham experience.
That said, I am pretty far from you (Dickinson) but, if you got over this
way, I'd be glad to meet and program it for you. Without CHIRP and the
programming cable, its a chore...

If not mistaken, you are on the fringe of BVARC repeater map. I'm doubtful
you will ever hit that with the Baofeng unless you have a several element
yagi antenna pointed at it and unobstructed line of site or roof of
neighborhood high-rise, lol. Repeaterbook does show one repeater in Clute
(145.35 1 100) and two in Angleton (147.18 + 141.3, and 147.34 + 103.5).

I can be reached here or wa3...@gmail.com if you'ld like to get in touch
directly.
