[BVARC] N5XZ Lightning Strike - Seeking guidance

2021-07-06 Thread Allen Brier N5XZ via BVARC
As many of you know, I have suffered a direct lightning strike here at my
station on Monday, June 28th about 6:30 am. It was essentially catastrophic for
most of my equipment inside the shack and I am still assessing the damage. I
even have some damage to audio gear in another room. Many other homes in the
neighborhood also suffered damage, one of them so bad that EVERY piece of
electronic equipment in the house was fried. I am still waiting for a power
supply to get my computer back up and running, but thanks to Orville K5VWW, we
have determined that the hard drive is intact.

I am seeking guidance from anyone who has suffered a similar fate. I need to
know:

- How did you deal with the insurance company?

- How did you test equipment to determine the extent of damage?

- Did you employ an electrical engineer to provide statement(s) to the
insurance company to validate damage?  (was is require to?) (Any EE's out there
available for this?)

- What was claimed? i.e. did you claim all feedlines, cables, adapters,
switches, etc. in addition to radios even if there is no damage visible?

Any other information which may benefit me in my claim would be appreciated. It
may be a while before I am back on the air again from my QTH.

Re: [BVARC] TS890 Early observations

2019-11-15 Thread Allen Brier N5XZ via BVARC
Thanks to Bill for the excellent report on the TS-890. Being the latest generation from Kenwood, I knew it would be a great rig. I owned a TS-830, then a 930, 940 and a 950 before switching to the K3. I am now eagerly awaiting test reports for the K4, my next rig. 73, Allen N5XZ-Original Message-

From my friend Bill Garfield just in case you may be interested.Pump-Original Message-From: Bill Garfield To: Bill Garfield Sent: Thu, Nov 14, 2019 7:00 pmSubject: TS890 Early observationsFirst full week of ownership & use:  Since dumping my problem-plagued IC-7610 (display issues, now on my 3rd screen) in favor of a new Kenwood TS-890S I’ve had a few folks ask me to comment on it.  What follows is just some rambling observations and comments about the beautiful new rig in my shack.   Most noticeable is the Kenwood 890 is much larger and heavier than the IC-7610. It’s also gorgeous!  By comparison, here are the approximate sizes of each rig that’s been in my shack lately.    The IC-7300 at 316 cu. in.  (9½ x 9½ x 3½) plus knobs & connectors, 9¼ lbsThe IC-7610 at 683 cu. in.  (13½ x 11 x 4½) plus knobs & connectors, 18.7 lbsThe TS-890s at 1151 cu in.  (15½ x 13½ x 5½) plus knobs & connectors, 35 lbs  And similar to the little 7300, the 890 also has a very nice matte finish, including the display screen.   If you like knobs & buttons, you’re going to like the 890, with a compliment of 72 individual pushbuttons and a total of 8 knobs on the front panel, counting the VFO.  Of the knobs, 5 of those are dual shaft (dual purpose) and every one of them has a very solid, good quality feel to it.  None of the knobs have any pushbutton function. They only move two directions, either clockwise or counter-clockwise.  In terms of menus, all I can say is I’m impressed!  If you’re the type who feels the need for complete control over every single facet of operation, the new 890 is definitely your rig. Just from the main display screen there are over 160 configurable option settings.  The average ham will never use most of them (I only used 46 myself), but if you like to customize things, you can customize to your heart’s content. But don’t be intimidated, as the menus are pretty well laid out and NONE of the optional settings are even required, as the rig works fine straight out of the box. Hook it up and enjoy!  There’s a nice printed manual in the box, but while handy for making pencil notes, I have to say that I found the owner’s manual a little difficult to navigate at first. Most of you will want to download an electronic (PDF) copy of the manual so you can spend less time looking for some of the more esoteric settings.  Before taking the initial plunge into the menus, a word of caution is in order. Something you’ll definitely want to make into Job # 1 is to learn how to make a backup of your settings and then start making regular recurring backups every time you configure another feature.  Not likely that you’ll mess anything up, but if a 3rd party software glitch acts like it has bricked your rig, as the RoMac CWid’er did mine, you’ll need to perform a full factory reset and without a backup of your settings you’ll scream loud enough that neighbors a block away will hear you. So the buzzword of the hour is backup, backup and backup!  There’s really no certain order in which to configure your desired settings, so once you’re ready, just pick something and go for it. I made my maiden voyage into the menus by learning how to set up the clock & how to display both local and UTC time. (I also kept a written log of everything I had changed from factory defaults).  Above all don’t be intimidated by your first perception of complexity. It’s really not. Configuration/setup can be as granular or as basic as you want to make it.  Remember that it works fine right out of the box without having to set anything.  Each of the 9 individual groups of menu items in the Top Level menu all have sub-menus under them. Some of those sub-menus contain only a few options to choose from, while others have as many as 32 options.  And just when you think you’re about there, you will then discover an ADVANCED menu button with another 27 options for you to consider.  Those 27 are some of the more esoteric settings that you probably won’t need, though a couple that may interest you have to do with setup of an external display and the screen resolution.  A 32-inch external monitor looks gorgeous, by the way.  Setting up your amplifier keying control is found in yet another menu with an option appropriately labelled “LINEAR AMP”.  … and speaking of which, if you have a linear amp but haven’t previously had one of the more recent Kenwood models, you’re going to discover that you’re going to have to build (which means make – in other words, solder) your own cable to connect the keying circuit of your amplifier, or else buy one pre-made o

Mega Field Day Participants, Field Day is a little over 1 week away. Most of
the logistics have been accounted for, but one important category remains
incomplete. The Field Day rules list a number of bonus activities which provide
the opportunity to add thousands of points to our Field Day score. Many of
these activities have been assigned, but some important ones remain. For
example, 1 satellite QSO is worth 100 points. That is equivalent to 50 SSB QSOs
in our class! I’ve attached an excerpt from the Field Day rules with the
unassigned activities highlighted in red (the green ones are already taken).
Please review this list and volunteer to fulfill one of these task. Not only
will you be helping us to achieve a great contest score, but you will be
helping to demonstrate our engagement with the community, as well as our
capability to function in an emergency situation. 73, Doug WB5TKITDXS Field Day

[BVARC] Yamaha CM500 vs. Koss SB40 Headsets

2019-06-09 Thread n5xz via BVARC
I just checked the specifications for these headsets and they both have Dynamic
microphones,  according to the online literature.  The CM500 is $60 and the
SB40 is $30 and the only differences are that the SB40 does not include the
bias battery pack required by some rig, but the Elecraft K3 does not require it
and the SB40 does not have the foam protector over the mic element.  Other than
that, they are exactly the same. I will do some over the air tests
someday.Allen N5XZ Sent from my Verizon, Samsung Galaxy smartphone___

I walked 100 feet north of the pole and the noise was reduced but still detectable. The current design with the CW manlift being in the parking area will have the beam pointing right at the light pole. Putting it on the other side, north of the road, would be better. tdxs-l...@tdxs.net Subject: [tdxs-list] FD Issues to be finalized We are about
one month away from our Mega FD event. We have a couple of issues that need to
be decided as we move forward with the planning. GOTA station operation,
management and promotion. Finalization of Antenna placement that includes
location of GOTA station6 meter antenna, location and operation. GOTA station
is very important during FD because it can account for many points besides the
QSO scores. We need someone to take on the task of organizing the setup,
operation and marketing of the station to the local schools, Boy Scouts, ARRL
officials, and other organizations. All of these activities can add a lot of
points to the total score. DO WE HAVE ANY VOLUNTEERS?? We also need to finalize
the exact location of the GOTA station at the FD site, including filters and
antennas, so we can finalize the layout of the antennas for minimum
interference between different stations.  Finally, due to the low number of
sunspots, a lot of our QSOs are going to come from operating 40 and 80 meters.
As you all know, the noise level on these two bands will make it very difficult
to hear stations calling us without special listening antennas. Dave, K5GN, has
a beverage antenna for 40 meters that he is willing to bring and install.
However, it needs to be installed away from the other antennas, including the
GOTA station.  The 6 meter antenna location needs to be decided and the rig
needs to be manned. Do we have a person responsible for the antenna erection
and operation of the station? Will this rig be operated on FT8  or just SSB?
If you are involved with any of these three issues, please let everyone know
the plan.  Nizar ___

Dear colleagues, the ARRL has an important series of errors on its note today
about RM-11831. I have written them but hope you can also apread the word, I am
hoping that ARRL fixes this: The text below is needed and should be corrected
(I have alerted ARRL officials)
athttp://www.arrl.org/news/petition-for-rule-making-calls-for-amateur-digital-mode-transparency
:  Kolarik said his petition also aims to reduce levels of amateur-to-amateur
interference from Automated Controlled Digital Stations (ACDS) on HF operating
under §97.221(d)(2).(There is no 97.221 (d)(2) ) Kolarik wants the FCC to
delete §97.221(c), which permits automatic control of digital emissions
anywhere in the CW/RTTY sub bands, outside of the ACDS sub bands as defined by
97.221(b),provided the station “is responding to interrogation by a station
under local or remote control, and [n]o transmission from the automatically
controlled station occupies a bandwidth of more than 500 Hz.” ACDS stations
would thus be required to operate only in the ACDS sub bands, under Mr.
Kolarik’s proposal. From: Ted Rappaport N9NB [mailto:tsrwvc...@aol.com] Sent:

I was born with a congenital heart defect and had open heart surgery at just 8 weeks old. I was later diagnosed with a global developmental delay and an ultra rare gene mutation ADCY5.This causes me to have a range of unpredictable movements that are painful, forceful and make my body contort in unnatural positions. They affect my entire body, even my larynx and my tongue! It affects me 24 hours a day; during the daytime it restricts my mobility and the ability to perform simple tasks like other children. My night times are the worst as this is when I have my most painful movements and I am yet to experience a full nights sleep.Doctors in the United State have tried lots of different drugs and tests to help me but so far nothing has worked. My mum and dad have found a specialist doctor in UK who has developed a non invasive technique in Neuroplasticity and he thinks he has a strong chance of reducing the frequency and intensity of my movements, ultimately with the outcome of giving me more independence and a better quality of life.My bedroom at home is fully padded to protect me from injury but when I go away to UK I can not take my bedroom with me. I therefore need a specialist travel bed to keep me safe at night. As always, any specialist equipment is very expensive to buy. My family have already come together to fund the trip but we still can't afford the travel bed.Your gift, no matter how small, will help enable me to stay safe at night whilst I'm in UK. Moving forward it will also mean I can stay over in hospital when I need treatments and go away on family holidays like my friends do.My mummy, daddy and i can't thank you enough for taking the time to read my story and any donations given will be gratefully received.  Make A DonationWhat is GoFundMe? GoFundMe is a personal fundraising website that has helped thousands of people raise millions of dollars for the things that matter to them most.

Comments:

Practiced a little bit with SO2R during slow times. 40 and 80 meters band
were noisy in the early evenings but OK late at night and early mornings.
Had fun but it is very long contest for a 75 years old. Too much sitting for
long periods.
Good practice with SO2R.

setup/take down antennas if you feel like, and get on the air with an elmer
during a light period? You might have more fun than you expected!

For Field Day next year we will (or should):

1. Have Jeff Hoke from CenterPoint Energy come out several months before
FD and then again several weeks before.
2. Locate the main antennas East<->West of each other to minimize
interstation interference.
3. Route digital feed lines separate from CW feed lines.
4. Investigate the use of some portable A/C units.
5. Investigate the use of coax stubs to further reduce interstation

6. KEEP THE SAME COOK! (Great job on food!)
7. KEEP THE SAME NETWORK GUY! (Great job on computers, networking,

8. Suggest either TDXS or BVARC purchase a new 2-el 40m beam.

10. Investigate the use of a manual switch to switch radios from mains to

I thought this was one of our best Field Days yet, due to the new location

Jeff, what you are hearing is the basic required information ONLY. No "please copy", no repeat of the other guys callsign or information, no extraneous conversation, no extended dead air periods. That is the way to run and achieve maximum QSO "rate". If you need a "fill", ask only for the information you need. If you make a correction, be sure to let the guy know you have made the correction. The same philosophy applies to CW, RTTY and other digital modes.I searched YouTube for some example of contest "running" and found more bad examples than good ones. Most of them had alot of extraneous, time wasting information exchange that was not necessary. Exchanging just the basic information in a clear and concise manner will double or triple your rate, and will be light years faster than "Search and Pounce" operating. A good operator with a good station and good conditions can easily exceed 200 QSO's per hour and in fact some have reached in the range of 350-450 per hour. That is six QSO's per minute! I have hit 400+ on a number of occasions. The cream of the crop operators can sometimes reach 450/hour for short periods. That guy averaged 7.7 QSOs/minute which is 462/hour! Great operator! That's the stuff that excites me! After a while you get a "gaming high", just ask other fast operators.More later...Allen N5XZ-Original Message-

Overall evaluation of the QUAD club FD would have to be 4+ out of 5. Great location, great teamwork and great people. Most importantly, the bands opened up on Sunday for a great ending. 3,000 QSOs considering that we had high noise on 40 and 80 meters and no
propagation on 15 and 10 on Saturday, is a great score. So, thank you to ALL the organizers and the clubs for making this very successful.

Here are a couple of suggestions to make it even better for next year.
1. Trace the noise generator prior to FD so we can reduce it. S9 noise on 80 meters made it almost useless. We could not hear most of the signals.

A few random thoughts on FD. For a few years I thought TDXS should break away
and do our own FD, I’m wrong. There isn’t enough TDXS members participating to
put up a tent, throw a rock over a tree with a long wire on the end. The BVARC
and Katy guys really did a great job with just about everything hardware
related. The current arrangement is perfect for all concerned, Glen and Allen
organizing computers and radios, BVARC guys towers and antennas, Katy guys
organizing, labor and sweat.
New location is far superior to the fire stations. Obviously figuring out the
noise issue prior to FD would be nice.

Re: [BVARC] FD thoughts

2018-06-26 Thread Allen Brier N5XZ via BVARC
Scott,

First of all, this issue wasn’t at night, it was during the day when the temp
got up to 82 while set far below it. Therefore, I think portable A/C units will
definitely help, as long as the panel board (circuit breaker panel) will
support them. However, I appreciate your observation that the T-stats are
locked. Another issue we will have to resolve before next year.

Second, there were no more computers there this year than last year, AND they
were the same computers as last year AND the noise was clearly sounding like AC
line interference, not like computers, so doubtful it was them. The electronic
equipment was almost exactly what we used last year, with the exception that
radios were all K3’s which were certainly NOT generating the noise. Reports
from most operators was that the noise was much worse than last year. In
addition, Nizar used a portable radio and we identified areas where noise
seemed to be emanating from which hopefully we will be able to either turn off
next year or, with Jeff’s help, positively identify and fix. Overthinking? I
don’t think so. I think I thought just about right.

Am I the only one who noticed that the thermostat was locked on 78—and reading
78—until it automatically switched to 75 at 3 a.m.? Did we forget that Duhacsek
Park, while being a spread I would've loved to retire to, is still run by the
government? That means said thermostat is likely set to comply with
governmental policy. Yes, I had a little “chat” with that thermostat during the
wee hours of boredom Sunday, instantly discovering that it was a Honeywell unit
virtually identical to mine. Those puppies are both programmable and
password-lockable, which Duhacsek was. There’s also the strong possibility
that, if you did bring in portable a/cs, you’d trigger the thermostat to turn
on the central heat. That would depend on whether the thermostat is in “full
automatic” mode as mine is, and what the setpoints are. Instead of trying to
beat the system, why not simply ask the powers that be to unlock it?

As for the interference, I suspect you’re vastly over-thinking the problem
because it was present to a lesser degree last year too. Although the steps you
list should help some, I think the crux of the issue is the mushrooming scale
of the computer equipment you’re so reliant on. Please don’t believe me. Simply
shut down everything except the radios for a short period after midnight next
year and listen for yourself.

5. Investigate the use of coax stubs to further reduce interstation
interference.

6. KEEP THE SAME COOK! (Great job on food!)

7. KEEP THE SAME NETWORK GUY! (Great job on computers, networking,
software, etc. We are really lucky to have you, Glen!)

8. Suggest either TDXS or BVARC purchase a new 2-el 40m beam.

9. Put CW antennas on highest manlifts.

10. Investigate the use of a manual switch to switch radios from mains to
generator (to eliminate last minute confusion…or) switch radios to generator
well before 1pm.

11. Make sure GOTA station operators know the rules.

I thought this was one of our best Field Days yet, due to the new location

CenterPoint or fix whatever is making the noise in the house. The house and the
land were a big improvement over what we have had in the past. The
participation by other clubs (especially KARS) was a big plus. We may need to
make some more rules, especially with respect to moving headsets around in the
SSB room…or make sure all are setup the same way. We also need a greater push
with the SSB operators regarding operating technique to maximize rate (teach
them to run).

I am also dumbfounded and extremely disappointed in the lack of participation
by other TDXS members. I suggest we make a push again for next year, but we
need to start six months in advance so that they do not make other plans first.

I know I have other thoughts and will express them as soon as they come to the
front of my mind.

Like Scott, I had the over night shift. I started at the beginning and
finished around 4:30 AM- 5:00AM, when Nizar came to rescue me! I went home and
slept for a couple of hours, then went to Church. I returned about 1/2 hour
before the end with my wife (KD8CMB) and tried to get her to work a little SSB.
Alas, no luck, but she did sign in!!

I did not do much of the take down, except move some tables and chairs, as my
grandson decided to be born on June 25th, and he takes priority! We had his
7th birthday party at our place. Can you imagine a house full of kids, right
after field day, and having only a couple hours of sleep!!

I agree wholeheartedly with Nizar’s and Curt’s comments. I am somewhat
dumbfounded at the lack of participation from the TDXS, as I believe there were
approximately 6 of us in attendance, although I could be wrong on that number
and just missed folks who came out on Sunday morning.

Overall evaluation of the QUAD club FD would have to be 4+ out of 5. Great
location, great teamwork and great people. Most importantly, the bands opened
up on Sunday for a great ending. 3,000 QSOs considering that we had high noise
on 40 and 80 meters and no propagation on 15 and 10 on Saturday, is a great
score. So, thank you to ALL the organizers and the clubs for making this very
successful.

Here are a couple of suggestions to make it even better for next year.
1. Trace the noise generator prior to FD so we can reduce it. S9 noise on 80
meters made it almost useless. We could not hear most of the signals.
2. Locate the antennas so as to minimize interference between SSB, CW and
Digital modes antennas.

[BVARC] 2018 BVARC / TDXS / KARS / ECHO FIELD DAY SIGNUP LINK

2018-05-17 Thread Allen Brier N5XZ via BVARC
Below is the Field Day signup link!

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1_CoLXpiWzGCTqBPevjCRejNDlf4T4hQYEWmW
h2OI6AA/edit?usp=sharing

Please let me know immediately if there are any problems signing on.

Jimmy, Marty, Scott and Eddie, please post to your respective websites.

Here are the rules:

As the operator scheduling person for Field Day this year, I have decided to
try something different. A link will be provided on both the BVARC and TDXS
reflectors at 8pm Wednesday night. The rules are:

1. Operating slots will be 1 hour.

2. Operators will be able to select up to three (3) contiguous slots
on the same band/mode.

3. Operators will be able to select up to six (6) slots per day, prior
to The Event, providing Rule #2 is observed. This will allow for more
operators to sign up in more slots.

4. Once a slot is selected, I will lock it in asap (no additional
editing) unless an email is sent directly to me to delete it.

5. You must be at your assigned operating slot 15 minutes in advance,
or it may be open to anyone else.

6. At the end of your assigned operating slot, please relinquish it to
the next operator; if that operator does not show up, you may continue to
operate.

7. If during your operating slot, you decide you want to quit, please
try to find another operator to fill in the rest of the slot.

8. The online schedule will be closed Friday, June 22, 2018 at 4:00 pm
CDT.

9. The online schedule will be printed out and brought to the Field
Day site Saturday, June 23. Operators may choose any open slots by manually
writing their call in that slot.

10. Any unclaimed operating slots after the start of Field Day will be
open for grabs.

11. Any scheduling issues/questions will be settled by N5XZ or KD5FBA.

In the interest of allowing all who wish to operate to do so, I think this
is the best approach. Remember, if it is not your turn, there may be an open
slot available elsewhere. I urge you to fill those in if you would still
like to be active. I expect fewer open operating slots during the day and
more at night. The goal also is to keep ALL stations operating continuously
throughout the 24 hour period. (Note: if you have not tried RTTY contesting,
it is a hoot! Just ask Glen or me to show you how easy it is!). Please feel
free to operate multiple bands and modes.

The ultimate goal is to keep ALL stations active throughout the full 24 hour
period!

Please respond to me alone (not to the group) and feel free to email or call
me if you have any questions or concerns. Please cross-post this to
distribution systems for KARS and Echo. Hopefully, this will also be posted
in newsletters by all groups.

This is the first time I have tried Google Sheets online, so hopefully there
won't be any major glitches. Please let me know asap if there are. Note also
that any changes and fixes will have to be done in the evening or weekends
as I may not have access to the spreadsheet during weekdays.

[BVARC] CRAP! IT'S BA-ACK!

2018-05-15 Thread Allen Brier N5XZ via BVARC
Can anyone stop this???

1. SB QST @ ARL $ARLB011
ARLB011 Amateur Radio Parity Act Language Inserted in National
Defense Authorization Act

ZCZC AG11
QST de W1AW
ARRL Bulletin 11 ARLB011
>From ARRL Headquarters
Newington CT May 11, 2018
To all radio amateurs

SB QST ARL ARLB011
ARLB011 Amateur Radio Parity Act Language Inserted in National
Defense Authorization Act

ARRL is praising the work of US Representatives Joe Courtney (D-CT),
Vicky Hartzler (R-MO), and Mike Rogers (R-AL) for their successful
efforts in securing language in the National Defense Authorization
Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2019 that aids in the survival and growth
of Amateur Radio by giving radio amateurs the right to install an
outdoor antenna at their residences with the approval of their
homeowners associations. This language - text from the proposed
Amateur Radio Parity Act (HR 555) - formed the basis for the
Courtney-Hartzler-Rogers Amendment to the NDAA.

The amendment, offered by the bipartisan trio and accepted by the
House Armed Services Committee by voice vote, will ensure that
Amateur Radio operators will continue to play a vital role in
disaster communication, when called upon. Amateur Radio has
long-standing relationships with the Department of Defense through
both the Military Auxiliary Radio Service (MARS) as well as spectrum
sharing.

The Armed Services Committee passed the NDAA by a 60-to-1 voice vote
after a 14-hour markup that ran well into the night. The bill now
awaits House floor action. The Senate will begin its markup of the
NDAA during the week of May 21.

Representatives Courtney and Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) spearheaded the
effort to include the Parity Act language in the NDAA. Both are
cosponsors of the Parity Act, which has passed the House by voice
vote twice in the past 2 years.

Recognizing the long-standing relationship between Amateur Radio and
the Department of Defense, Congressman Kinzinger - who served
multiple tours for the USAF as a fighter pilot and is still a Major
in the Air National Guard, and Courtney, who represents the House
district that includes ARRL Headquarters, have been champions of the
legislation in Congress.

"The steadfast support of the Amateur Radio community continually
demonstrated by Congressmen Kinzinger and Courtney has been a
godsend," said Hudson Director Mike Lisenco, N2YBB. "The Parity Act
wouldn't be anywhere close to this stage without their strong
support, and our organization is extremely grateful."

Lisenco, who serves as Chairman of the ARRL Board's Legislative

[BVARC] FW: [tdxs-list] Expert Amp 2K-FA For Sale Here Before EBay

Behalf Of Chuck Dietz
Sent: Tuesday, May 08, 2018 1:29 PM
To: tdxs
Subject: [tdxs-list] Expert Amp 2K-FA For Sale Here Before Ebay

I am selling my Expert 2K-FA Amp. Offering here before Ebay. $6,000 here, more
on Ebay.

This is my personal (One Owner) SPE Expert 2K-FA Solid State Ham Linear
Amplifier. Legal limit linear Ham radio HF amplifier. Completely solid state
and software controlled it also automates rig/antenna switching and loading.
Instant on . . . Can easily drive over 2000 watts. Comes like it did from the
factory with all original packaging, shipping boxes, travel cover, etc.

Is ready to ship today . . . compared to waiting 4-6 months delivery on a new
order!

Excellent condition. Bob Hardie who repairs these tested it and it performs as
designed.

WHY SELLING?: Too many amps, not enough money!

QUESTIONS: I have been a Ham for over 60 years (W5PR), and want you to be happy
with your purchase . . . so ASK FIRST any question BEFORE you bid! I will do my
best to be responsive as possible.

TERMS: Payment is due 24 hours after end of auction. Payment via PayPal is
strongly advised, otherwise shipping will be delayed until payment fully clears
my bank (10-14 day delay). Will usually ship FedEx insured within 24 hours of
payment. Pick-up in the Houston, Texas area is possible. International Shipping
is possible using eBay International Drop ship process!

This was my first remote operation of this contest, using W5FMH station and

Remote Hams / N1MM software. It sure isn't as easy as using the home
station.

There is a delay that really throws my rhythm off and some stations start

sending before the remote radio goes back to receive. Perhaps it is my

underpowered POS (Point of Sale) computer, or my connection (AT&T 50MBit).

Also, not being able to control the radio with KNOBS seems to be hard to get

used to, as I couldn't immediately reach for the WIDTH or RIT as required.
N1MM

worked great and all macro commands were handled perfectly. Anyway, it's
gonna

take some getting used to.

My best single op effort to date! Once again, a big thanks to Pat for letting
me use his W5FMH remote club station and his call for the contest as well as
for being there to help throughout the weekend. There were no major technical
difficulties besides a period of time where the receive audio was somewhat
distorted, but a reset of the remote fixed that. Otherwise, things worked
flawlessly! As for the bands, they were in very mediocre shape so I spent a lot
of time running those one point US stations. Rates however, were very good. And
thanks to all that spotted me as that helped me greatly! I took a small, two
hour off time in the wee hours of Saturday morning and again from around 2 AM -
10 AM on Sunday morning. I operated the rest of the contest besides those
times. I enjoyed this contest immensely WPX is certainly one of my
favorites. Thanks for all the calls! And for those of you that like the

Congrats to Al on his top spot, too!

SUBJECT Response to: PS Docket No. 17-344 Question C. 8
As a FCC licensed Amateur Radio Operator since 1954, I have participated in
many disaster communications in response to earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes,
wild fires, shipboard SOS responses, and stranded/injured/lost individuals or
groups.
The Puerto Rico Hurricane Maria communications disaster highlights the inherent
value of Amateur Radio operators in establishing immediate on site emergency
communications and deploying additional members quickly, serving at no cost to
any government body.
The FCC should seriously examine the limitations it places on Amateur Radio in
disaster communications and allow us to transmit and receive all critical life
saving communications. Please update your part 97 rules accordingly, as many in
Amateur Radio have already suggested.
I found the comments by my own national organization, the ARRL, the National
Association for Amateur Radio; and that of Steve Waterman, Winlink Radio Email
System Administrator to be off topic and inappropriate and they should be
largely ignored.
The most important rebuttal for you to heed to both ARRL and Waternan's off
topic plea for you to act on their already commented upon RM-11708 is that the
majority of ARRL's own members oppose it, and Waterman's intentions are for
commercial gain in the Amateur spectrum with an encrypted, proprietary product
that would harm the existing modes of operations Amateur Radio licensees use.
A more appropriate response to your request for comments is this one from a
licensed Radio Amateur operator who was on the ground in Puerto Rico.It is on
topic and worth heeding:
Response to: PS Docket No. 17-344 Question C. 8. ARC/ARRL Puerto Rico Hurricane
Maria Deployment of Ham Radio Operator to Juncos Overview I was one of the 22
amateur radio operators deployed to Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. The
comments and recommendations in this document are mine alone. The original
mission of the ARRL/ARC mission was to pass ARC Safe & Well information to ARC
HQ via HQ Winlink. Once on the island that mission was abandoned and amateur
radio operators were deployed to assist in filling critical communications gaps
where they were known to exit. I was deployed Puerto Rican Urban Search and
Rescue HQ in Juncos PR a town of approx 40,000. The town was without power,
cell coverage and the 800MHZ Police and Fire department communications system
was not functioning. The Puerto Rican USAR team was completely without
communications. I was able to provided coverage from Juncos into the FEMA EOC
and the ARC HQ in San Juan using a 2M Yeasu FT-7800 radio and via the amateur
radio 2M repeater KP4IA. I maintained this coverage for 15 days until cell
coverage was restored to Juncos and portions of the PD/PD 800MHZ comm system
was restored. Administrative traffic was passed to and from us via email using
HF Winlink. Another effort was not so successful. During the day the majority
of USAR members are deployed away from Juncos. Working with members of the
Chicago Fire Department who were deployed to Puerto Rico attempts to provide
reliable communications to the deployed teams using both VHF and UHF systems
were made but due limited range of UHF, a lack of VHF radios in the USAR
vehicles, the low power/battery life of hand held radios, the terrain and wide
disbursement of the team members no reasonable, reliable system of
communications to these teams was found.
Comments/Recommendations:
1. The simplicity, area covered and ease of setting up VHF communications

[BVARC] MMTTY received signal levels low

2018-02-12 Thread Allen Brier N5XZ via BVARC
Suddenly, the signal levels on the MMTTY scope seem to be very low. In
addition, only the loudest signals are decodable. Nothing in my
configuration has changed (that I know of) except that I did an upgrade to
the microHAM micro KEYER II firmware. (I am not saying that is the cause,
but the only thing that I know of that has changed). I have been using FT8 a
lot these days, but I don't see how that can make a difference.

Rig: K3/P3

Interface: micro KEYER II v6.12 with Device Router v8.8.4.

I have checked all cables and setting that I know of to set. Audio levels
are mostly set to max and yet the cross hair display on MMTTY shows low
levels. In addition, the audio seems distorted on receive (at least the
image is distorted). On transmit, all levels are normal and the image is
clean.

Any ideas??

Commissioners
Federal Communications Commission
445 12 th Street SW
Washington, DC 20554

RE: Comments on PSHSB 17-344
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I am writing to urge the Commission to dismiss proposals that would permit
wideband digital modes on narrowband HF frequencies.

The following arguments were prepared by Peter S Alterman, W2CDO and were
previously submitted. I fully support these arguments.

The particular issues that make wideband modes in narrowband HF frequencies
incompatible with all other services, especially during emergencies are:

Impede, Rather than Improve Emergency Communications:
Unattended wideband modes, e.g., Winlink, require expensive equipment at
both ends of the communications path. This equipment is available through a
single manufacturer. This limits the number of stations that can deploy such
a mode during an emergency.

On the other hand, most amateur radio
stations on either side of a communications channel during an emergency have
the necessary equipment, available from a wide variety of manufacturers (and
even home brewed equipment) to successfully communicate.

Not Efficient: Winlink wideband modes are not efficient. They consume
limited HF frequencies dedicated to narrowband communications. In fact,
these modes have a bandwidth footprint that is comparable to SSB voice
bandwidth and therefore would be better located within those subbands, if
anywhere.

Encryption: Winlink modes are encrypted modes. Encrypted transmissions are
explicitly forbidden by Part 97.
More germane at this point in time is that the Defense, Intelligence and
Law Enforcement authorities of the United States aggressively oppose any
expansion of encrypted communications of any sort and this position is a
vexed issue at the highest levels of government.

  A corollary argument that has
been put forward regards a putative need for encrypted communications to
satisfy HIPAA privacy communications requirements. The Centers for Medicare
and Medicaid Services, DHHS, which is responsible for HIPAA regulation and
the Office of Civil Rights, DHHS, which is responsible for policingHIPAA
compliance, do not classify amateur radio communications as Covered Entities
under HIPAA.
That means that such communications when used to exchange data regarding a
patient are not subject to HIPAA regulations or the Privacy Act regarding
protection of personally identifiable information. Any argument made on
these grounds should be immediately dismissed as misleading.

Unavoidable Harm to Thousands of Active Operators: Winlink, indeed any
unattended mode, interfere with ongoing narrowband communications in HF.
This also is a violation of Part 97 regulations governing the behavior of
amateur communications. Narrowband communications modes are not compatible
with the bandwidth demands of wideband digital modes. Tens of thousands of
amateur radio operators will be unavoidably harmed if unattended and
wideband digital modes are allowed free rein in narrowband HF frequencies.
This is clearly not in the best interests of the amateur community.

Unnecessary Regulation: Finally, the Commission has the authority to direct
waivers and special permissions to allow or disallow any communication and
mode anywhere within the amateur frequency allocations during times of
emergencies. There is no need for a regulation giving special privileges
sought by special interests advancing their monopolistic mode on the basis
of emergency communications service.

Respectfully,
Robert Roomberg KB3BYT

of Steve Waterman and ARRL at FCC 17-344, where they seek immediate adoption of
NPRM 16-239 and also seek legalization of Pactor 4 (and more) anywhere on hf
cw bands

You can see a slow and steady drum beat of presumably "non hams" all piling on
with brief notes to support Steve Waterman's comments, where Steve is the head
of Winlink which supports or runs commercial HF internet businesses. See the
comments and reply comments of FCC 17-344.

It's our (hams) spectrum for now, but if you are quiet and don't protest
immediately at the FCC , we shall surely lose narrowband protections and face
Pactor 4 and encoded wideband data everywhere in the HF cw bands, and not just
the ACDS subbands.

It's our spectrum to lose right now, and being quiet and not standing up to
these 2 comments is how to lose it!

There are 10 days left to file comments and hams are losing this right now!

Please get active and spread the word!

FYI I'm writing this open letter to all directors individually, and I urge you
to write all of them, too, individually, and spread the word!

And be sure to spread the word for all hams to aggressively file comments at
FCC before feb 20, 2018 . In your FCC comments,
don't blatantly attack ARRL or winlink or Pactor or ACDS, but point out factual
problems with the FCC wt16-239 Notice of Proposed rule making and with
ARRL's/Winlink's desire to push it , your own experiences

with wideband digital data, with Puerto Rico, the past history of suggestions
made for the FCC and why, what arrl has done or not done in the past in these
Rulemakings, and proved succinct technical and business arguments needed to
keep ham radio communications open and with RF bandwidth limits that will
protect cw and ft8 and rtty and wspr (NOTE: wspr was just recently put into
ARRL gunsights in the most recent committee minutes released this week).

See links below! Spread the word, again we must rise to save open narrowband
Communications on our precious HF spectrum!

Jim, I'm really sorry we never talked! I hope we do soon.

How did you vote in the presidential election between K5ur and k1ki? Many of us
in VA,NC, PVRC are wondering.

Also, Please, please help me and tens of thousands (or more) of US hams
understand the League's continual aggression to try and ram home Pactor 4 and
other automated encrypted/compressed data into the HF bands.

Under Vic Poor and others, ARRL tried to ram home RM-11306 at the FCC in 2005,
and after pulling back, 8 years later came back with a retooled version
attacking the cw subbands in Rm-11708 that sadly has caused the FCC to suggest
no bandwidth limit as a rulemaking (96-16 ; wt16-239) that is now on the table!
If adopted, it will change the landscape of HF communications, and will allow
encrypted wideband data of any bandwidth to go ANYWHERE on the cw HF subbands,
just like has been happening with the current small number of winlink operators
who violate the ACDS and "documented compression" FCC rules daily. But the new
rule making, which would remove the existing 300 baud bandwidth protection, if
adopted, would permit unlimited bandwidth signals, and no way to decode the
transmitting station ID or to monitor its automated traffic. Private Email and
web browsing commerce would result, and a few wideband data stations could take
over the entire HF band!

Potential Result: CB for internet use, with compressed/encrypted d
