Re: [BVARC] Signal noise and suggestion on how to reduce it

2023-09-28 Thread Venkata Appala via BVARC
Thanks John. I set the DNR to 4 already. As Jeff(Greer) mentioned, it appears
the main culprit could be the way I was running my coax in the home. I was
running it near to the kitchen appliances and guess that interfered. I set up
the radio this evening and it’s performing way better than last two weeks. I
have to yet turn on the DNR today :). Rick sent a nice article on HF receiver
basics and I am planning to go through it which might help understand the
various components including attenuation.

Thanks once again for the guidance,

I don't know if it was mentioned yet, but on my Yaesu FT-891 I typically
have my DNR set to 4 and it seem to do a pretty good job of clearing up
the audio.

Also at a past Field Day event (all of them were in the past) at the
GOTA station we were being hammered pretty good by the other stations at
the KK5W site, so we found that using the attenuation function helped
tremendously. It might help with the noise issue as well.

It’s a mfj 1979 17ft vertical. It is mounted on a flag pole rod that I just
hammer into the soil close to the backyard fence. I have two sets of 4 radials
in 180 degree pattern since I have a fence on the other side. When I use the

the noise is crazy high. Most of the stations are extremely noisy. For some
reason, I was able to hear really well few weeks ago. Is this something I am
doing wrong or something to do with propagation ?

For the above setup, I am always on 20m ssb. I do have few metal trellis

Venkat and Chris,

Have a read of this Radio Hotel column...from September 2017

https://bvarc.org/rh/rh_1709.pdf HF Receiver Basics

It might shed some light on your issues. Might not solve the noise problem
completely, but it will steer you in the direction of having your HF
receiver set up properly. At the end of this Radio Hotel article is a
reference to an ARRL "The Doctor is In" podcast with Joel Hallas (sk) that
will add some additional enlightenment. Do a search on QST for HF
Receiving. Lastly, the ARRL Operators Manual will shed some light too
along with a visit from your well experienced Elmer. .

Looks like you are on the path to understanding HF receiving. I wish you
well. Enjoy the hobby73...Rick W5RH

Cool thanks for this info Rick. Up until just a few years ago I have always
been a die-hard Kenwood guy for HF (TS-120 then TS-570S), now the very popular
991a, I never would have known this info. And believe it or not, I’ve read
through the operators manual more than once.

Next time I fire it up, I will definitely have to tweak my RF Gain and see what
happens.

That’s awesome John. Loving the radio. The antenna setup is super fast as well.
I am done in 5 mins. Just purchased the wolf river coil and hopefully, will
join the bvarc rag chew soon.

2023-09-27 Thread Venkata Appala via BVARC
Jeff, you might have solved my problem. Couple weeks ago, I started routing my
cable via kitchen to avoid kids( one of them is just 3 yr old) and close to the
appliances. That might be it. I will go back to my old way of routing cables.
Thank you for the suggestion.

 Hi Venkata,

Vertical antennas are noisy because most man-made noise is vertically
polarized. An inverted V on 20 meters with the apex at the top of a

and may even give you better coverage. You can make a fence tip antenna

 Afternoon,
First of all, thank you for all the responses to my last email about
antennas. I have another question related to the same topic and looking
off some guidance. I normally setup my hf antenna for weekend use in my
backyard. It’s a mfj 1979 17ft vertical. It is mounted on a flag pole rod
that I just hammer into the soil close to the backyard fence. I have two
sets of 4 radials in 180 degree pattern since I have a fence on the other
side. When I use the rig expert to check swr, it’s always around 1.15-1.2.
While the we is very low, the noise is crazy high. Most of the stations
are extremely noisy. For some reason, I was able to hear really well few
weeks ago. Is this something I am doing wrong or something to do with
 propagation ?

For the above setup, I am always on 20m ssb. I do have few metal trellis
hanging near to the antenna few ft away but I am not sure if they cause
 any interference.
Disclaimer: I don’t know how to read the noise level on my radio yet,
apologies if this is the most basic thing I should have known before I do
anything. Trying to learn as quickly as I can 

Re: [BVARC] Signal noise and suggestion on how to reduce it

2023-09-27 Thread Jeff Greer via BVARC
I have found that I can get noise sometimes when the dishwasher or washer/dryer
is running. Keep the coax as far away from house walls (wiring) as you can. May
help. Also, learn to narrow your filters. I think you can do that on the Yaesu.
But if you can, test the radio with various things in the house turned off and
on. You may well find a culprit.

How long are the radials? The more copper you can put on the ground, the
better. If they are about 15' long, doubling what you have should do a good job
for you.

Afternoon,
First of all, thank you for all the responses to my last email about
antennas. I have another question related to the same topic and looking off
some guidance. I normally setup my hf antenna for weekend use in my backyard.
It’s a mfj 1979 17ft vertical. It is mounted on a flag pole rod that I just
hammer into the soil close to the backyard fence. I have two sets of 4 radials
in 180 degree pattern since I have a fence on the other side. When I use the
rig expert to check swr, it’s always around 1.15-1.2. While the we is very low,
the noise is crazy high. Most of the stations are extremely noisy. For some
reason, I was able to hear really well few weeks ago. Is this something I am
doing wrong or something to do with propagation ?

For the above setup, I am always on 20m ssb. I do have few metal trellis
hanging near to the antenna few ft away but I am not sure if they cause any
interference.
Disclaimer: I don’t know how to read the noise level on my radio yet, apologies
if this is the most basic thing I should have known before I do anything.
Trying to learn as quickly as I can 
Thanks,

I am using the same type of antenna. The MFJ 1979. I have mine mounted on my
metal fence in the backyard. I do have noise but since I got a new radio, the
filter knocks it out and I am able to get good copies on everything. Check
things like your power supply and cut the power off in the house and see if the
noise drops at all.

2023-09-27 Thread Nick Creason KE5QY via BVARC
Hi Venkata,

Vertical antennas are noisy because most man-made noise is vertically
polarized. An inverted V on 20 meters with the apex at the top of a 6-foot
fence and the ends about a foot above the ground will be quitter and may even
give you better coverage. You can make a fence tip antenna out of a few
dollars' worth of wire and have some fun.

I have good luck nation wide with my fence mounted antenna and a hundred wats.
And best of all , my HOA has no idea I'm a ham.

Look up NVIS antennas on the internet. There is a lot of info on these low
wire antennas.

Nick, KE5AY
