New to PHP
Hello guys, I programmed in php for over 2 years, but had to stop due to some problems, stoped for over a year. Now that im finally starting back, i came across cake php, and i want to know if its a good idea to use it, without a good knowledg in php. I would start from the beggining, doing small things... Also, i would like to know if i can still program normally afer installing cakephp on my server, or if ill HAVE to use it everytime im programming. I hope i made myself clear, and that you guys can answer my questions fast. Thanks --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Cake PHP group. Re: New to PHP
First of all, no, you don't *have* to use Cake (or even PHP) just because you install one or both of them on your server. Your best bet, before diving right into Cake, is to find a good intro book to PHP programming. Here's a good place to start: http://www.oreilly.com/pub/topic/php --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Cake PHP group. Re: using OpenLayers (like an external library) in my cake application
Ain't openLayers a javascript library ? Might be more logic to put it in webroot/js, include the Javascript helper in your helper, and abstract the calls or whatever you want to do. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Cake PHP group. You have sent more then one email to this list, and to members of this list privately asking for assistance with something you obviously can not comprehend, offering them cash to help you. Once is enough! I let through the first time, the second time it is spam. Do I look stupid enough to ask the same person twice? (Quick, who has a mirror?) Got that mirror handy? I think you need to look through your sent mail, I have thread started from you on Dec 28, 2006 in that email I posted you a list of places to look for help, one being the IRC channel where many people, myself included are helping other users daily. You know where the channel is because you joined it for a brief moment using the web interface as baker389 http://irc.cakephp.org/cakephp/viewlog/2006-12-28#1130 how long did you wait for someone to help you there? Does not look like every long from the log does it? You did the same thing you have done here, requested that someone contact you to help. Another link I gave you was the manual, which you asked me to translate to English for you. I responded that it was in English since I only speak English. You continued to email me with comments like: [snip] Try to look the words up in Merriam-Webster. Then think back to what it was like before you got wrapped up in computers - how few of the words are drawn from English. [/snip] I then told you to contact the foundation for consulting which you did and we responded back, you have not replied. Today I log on after a long trip and find another email from you to my personal account: [snip] Hi, I would like to be able to email questions concerning CakePHP daily and receive an answer. Please advise. Peter [/snip] Now I am either imagining all of these emails from you to my personal account, or you are stupid enough to ask the same person twice, how is that mirror doing for you? The spam is the result of problems with Google Groups messages not appearing - or being mysteriously delayed (one never knows which.) The problem is common in Google Groups, you know? spam would be unwanted email, which I along with others have received from you to our private emails. You have offered money once in the group and apparently no one responded to you, as I did about contacting the foundation or with an offer to help. Or they did respond and your offer money is not enough for them to tutor you on the finer points of Reading 101. Given that you are the (?) person who wrote CakePHP, maybe you could spend your time a little more productively, like, e.g., writing a CakePHP model for itself so we could have data entry screen (and reports, and real programmer's utilities (beyone application utilities))? Obviously you are one of the few who think what I do on this project is not productive. I think you have a misunderstanding of what cake is used for, it is not a application for you do enter data, build reports and so on. It is a tool for you as a software developer to develop these type of applications. Normally I would tell someone like you to read the manual, but since I already have and you seem to lack the basic knowledge needed to comprehend the examples there and expect everything to be handed to you on a silver platter, I will not waste my time. I think you are looking for something other then a framework, maybe a CMS is more geared toward your needs, they are quite easy to use, and most do not need any knowledge of software development to comprehend. Not sure if it is in the Merriam-Webster but a CMS is a Content Management System. Google it. Just a thought. Think again Peter, think real hard again... Re: anything similar to acts_as_tree in Rails
Cool. behaviors and especially act_as_tree look interesting but I still don't grasp it really. Well to make a long story short, behaviors basically allow you to add new *methods* to a Model that has a certain behavior attached to it, as well as getting all the beforeFind/afterFind/etc. callbacks. It's almost like inheritance, but better - it allows for multiple parents ; ). -- Felix -- http://www.thinkingphp.org http://www.fg-webdesign.de Olivier Percebois-Garve wrote: Cool. behaviors and especially act_as_tree look interesting but I still don't grasp it really. Re: Need a little suggestion how to get my javascript file invoked
morning mate, I've included the Js Calendar code successfully in a few applications. You might be able to use the method I have employed. 1. Structure - Put the `jscalendar` dir in your `vendors` directory (at the same level as your Cake dir). - Put the `jscalendar` dir in your `js` directory (within your webroot) - NOTE: you probably only need the calendar.php file in part 1 of this step, but for now just drop the whole thing in there 2. Component - I've put my calendar code in a component as I use it quite often - Create a calendar component (or I've created a general form component) and include the following function /** * * Allows a form to include calendar elements * * @return boolean success */ function initCalendar() { // include required vendors vendor('jscalendar/calendar'); $calendar_lang = 'en'; $calendar = new DHTML_Calendar($this-controller-base . '/js/jscalendar/', $calendar_lang, 'calendar-win2k-2', false); $this-controller-set('calendar', $calendar); // set any header elements that may be required if (isset($this-controller-Header)) { $this-controller-Header-addHeader($calendar-get_load_files_code()); } else { $this-controller-set('headers', $calendar-get_load_files_code()); } } - NOTE: I use an additional Header component in the above code, you will need to remove reference to it. 3. Controller - Now we have this code wrapped up nicely you can call it wherever you like - e.g. // init calendar $this-ExtForm-initCalendar(); - NOTE: My component is called ExtForm - NOTE: don't forget to include your component in the controller that calls it using the $components variable. 4. Layout - In your layout you need to include the headers required for the calendar - we set these in our component earlier - NOTE: I'm using a helper again, you'll need to remove that code and just output the $headers value ?php if (isset($headers)) $header-generateHeaders($headers); ? 5. View / Helper - Again, I've packaged my code so I can reuse it all the time. - My method of doing this is fairly cumbersome and has quickly become outdated since the release of CakePHP v1.2 so I will try and summarize with some code snippets. - Basically, have a look at the calendar.php file and you can see how it goes about outputting a calendar field. I also created a function called get_input_field that returned the rendered input field as a string as opposed to outputting it. $calendarOptions = array( 'firstDay' = 1, // show Monday first 'showsTime' = false, 'showOthers' = true, 'ifFormat' = '%Y-%m-%d', 'daFormat' = '%Y-%m-%d', 'timeFormat' = '12', 'align' = 'cR' ); $calendar-get_input_field($calendarOptions,$calendarFieldAttributes); - NOTE: set $calendarFieldAttributes to represent the attributes of the text field to go along side the calendar. I think that about covers it. I may have forgotten something, and the instructions get a bit patchy towards the end - my apologies. The way I've done it (in total) is too bulky to include here. I need to streamline my code a lot more. Hope to do this when I venture in to 1.2. being able to set the base root to an action / controller with parameter
I see how the default route is setup and how default actions get mapped in this manner: http://www.domain.com/cake/controller/action/$var1 assuming that cake is set up in the development environment. What I'd like to be able to do is have: http://www.domain/com/cake/$var1 map to a controller and action and pass $var1 to the action configured in routes.php. Ideally, I'd like to remove the default behavior for the controller of ignoring the trailing slash and have something like: $Route-connect('/',array('controller'='profiles', 'action'='index','query')); in routes.php. Maybe it could be done via .htaccess but I'm no expert on that. Is this possible? thanks, -j --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Cake PHP group. Re: beforeSave return false, what with afterFind...?!
Hey Nate, Thanks for your time! What I'm trying to do evolves around virtual fields. For instance in the user model, the afterFind() method creates 2 virtual fields, one named name_lf and containing a user full name in 'lastname, firstname' format. This works like a charm. Now if I edit a user, and save my changes, if the beforeSave() in the User Model returns false, nothing is saved to the db, and the 'error mode' is triggered, the edit form shown again. (that's a pretty standard cake behaviour) Now that's from where my question was raised; because the user data is stored in the post, it's not pulled from the DB again - which is great. However because it's not pulled again, the afterFind() in the User Model is not called, and the name_lf virtual field not created. Because of that and because I'm using this virtual field in the edit form, I get an error about this name_lf not being defined, hence my question, when should a beforeSave return false..?! Code? function afterFind($results) { if (is_array($results)) { foreach ($results as $key = $obj) { if (!isset($obj[$this-name]['id'])) { continue; } $results[$key][$this-name]['name_lf'] = ($obj[$this-name]['lname'] ? $obj[$this-name]['lname'] . ', ' : '') . $obj[$this-name]['fname']; } } return parent::afterFind($results); } function beforeSave() { // say I was to do something here... db related or not... and something fails... which is possible according to the manual return false; } end code So.. yeah... I don't think I'm doing anything wrong... and am just wondering why this all could be... Cheers! Seb. Re: controller calling an other controller with an array as parameter
Try requestAction($url, $extra) From the Manual: This function calls a controller's action from any location and returns the rendered view. The $url is a Cake URL (/controllername/actionname/params). If the $extra array includes a 'return' key, AutoRender is automatically set to true for the controller action. http://manual.cakephp.org/chapter/controllers -- TJ Singleton --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Cake PHP group. OT - Q for PHPNut on DBDesigner 4 - Was: ER Tools
Hi Larry This question is way off topic for the list so feel free to ignore/delete/reply off list. I would have asked it on the FabForce support forum, but is has been closed down due to attacks :-( I have also scoured Google without luck on this topic. I have hit a snag with DBDesigner and foreign keys and Cake. As my tables are named in the Cake convention: model_names I am getting foreign keys called: model_names_id rather than model_name_id Having looked at your output for the Bakery here: http://phpnut.cakephp.org/img/roundtable.png it looks like you have managed to get around this issue. I have scoured settings in DBDesigner, but can't figure it out. If there is a trick, perhaps you could share it with the list? Langdon, Sure no problem... For example users table comments table. Create a 1:n association from users table to comments table. This will create a users_id in the comments table. Double click the link between them. The edit screen should allow you to change users_id to user_id. custom query returns odd array
Hi, I'm running a custom query that adds up the total number of establishments (bars, stores, etc.) in a city and then order then my by this total: $aTopCitiesList = $this-query('SELECT `cities`.`id`, `cities`.`name`, count( `establishments`.`name` ) AS `total` FROM `cities` LEFT JOIN `establishments` ON `establishments`.`city_id` = `cities`.`id` GROUP BY `cities`.`name` ORDER BY `total` DESC , `cities`.`name` ASC LIMIT 12 '); This returns a result set like: [0] = Array ( [cities] = Array ( [id] = 28 [name] = Barrie ) [0] = Array ( [total] = 181 ) ) I'm wondering why Cake is returning each row as two separate arrays instead of just adding the total to the [cities] array. I'm thinking of just post-processing this to put the total into the cities array, but I'm wondering if I need to re-state the query a different way? (btw: I noticed if I use execute instead of query, the total field is dropped from the results completely) Thanks, Zoltan www.yyztech.ca - Toronto cybercafes, reviews --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Cake PHP group. Problem with mod_rewrite
I've put my web application on my univ's lab server and my page didn't load at all (even 1 page). I've been told from the admin that I can't use mod_rewrite in Apache configuration. So, I try follow the instruction in the manual: - Clear out the comment on core.php that looks like define ('BASE_URL', env('SCRIPT_NAME')); - Delete all .htaccess in root, root/app/, root/app/webroot -- I've read this in core.php After that, the welcome screen from cake is seen (which it contains ... your database is present..). But when I try to point out the address, something looks like http://localhost/username/users/index, the Apache server return not found. I've also tried to leave .htaccess in root, root/app, root/app/webroot, and append RewriteBase /username/ in .htaccess file but all seems didn't work at all. So, how to solve this problem? I've no idea at all. Thanks in advance. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Cake PHP group.
