Re: [Carbon-dev] Adding a comment tag to synapse configuration

2010-06-20 Thread Sanjiva Weerawarana
I think the proposal is to add an optional element (with
content xs:any) as a valid child of every mediator and to have an optional
"name" attribute for all mediators to as well.

Sanjiva.

Re: [Carbon-dev] Adding a comment tag to synapse configuration

2010-06-19 Thread Ruwan Linton
+1

My personal belief is that we could preserve XML comments as well, but I
don't have time at this moment to do a PoC of that, and also even with
having that feature it is really good to have a child
element and a @name attribute for all the mediators, and a doc tag for
all the pieces in synapse configuration.

Well, this should be discussed on the synapse-dev, not on this list :-(

Can some one bring this onto the synapse dev list?? summarizing this thread.

Thanks,
Ruwan

2010-06-19 Thread Hofman, Peter (NL)
I think you want 2 additional optional fields (either element or attribute).
Well, at least I would want this :)
1) a user given name for the mediator, which allows to give a short description
which will help understanding the sequence.
2) a description or documentation field, in which a description of the use of
the mediator can be given.

What about simply adding an optional attribute to each mediator?

Hi,

that is great!
When does it have to be finished? The last commit is from 4 weeks ago, and of
all mediators it only contains the 'in' mediator.
What is the plan for using it? Code generation? Validation?

Re: [Carbon-dev] Adding a comment tag to synapse configuration

2010-06-18 Thread Hofman, Peter (NL)
I had a discussion about this with a colleague of mine. He proposed another
solution: adding attributes in the synapse schema definition.
I think either (optional) attributes or optional elements are far better than
(ab)using xml comments.

There is also a solution that only requires modification of the GUI: display
information from the configuration when displaying it. E.g. when a sequence
contains an XSLT mediator, why not display the name of the XSLT file next to or
below the mediator on screen. The same for a Send mediator: display the
endpoint name or URL next to or below the send mediator on screen. This would
already provide more information for understanding the sequence.

I would prefer extension of the synapse schema with either attributes or
elements.

Cheers,
Peter

I think this is the xmi file which is generated by emf / gmf frameworks.
Sure, we can add the comment property to the emf model for the eclipse
synapse editor but the problem is it would only be useful for eclipse
synapse plugin users. I think supun's proposal aims to make comments
available at the storage level (either as tags or generic xml
comments) so that all presentations (eclipse, web console etc.) can utilize
them.

Re: [Carbon-dev] Adding a comment tag to synapse configuration

2010-06-16 Thread Supun Kamburugamuva
If we are going to support XML comment preservation, every mediator
should be aware of this. I cannot see a way other than changing every
mediator. If that is the case we have lot of work to do as well as
there can be lot of changes. There may be other approaches that I
cannot see but for now lets assume we have to change every mediator.

Then my first question is, is it worth to change every mediator so
that they can store XML comments?

With our current framework we can achieve this easily by introducing a
new tag. It is easy and changes are not as distributed as the XML
comment approach.

Another thing is if we go for the comment approach, because of the
changes it require it may never get done. So isn't it better to go for
a simpler solution?

Also to enable XML comments we may have to change mediator UI's as well.

Thanks,
Supun..

Right, that is what exactly I meant by "it is hard, but should be able
to". :-)

This seems to be the right choice. But we need to have a way to map XML
comments to various component definitions in the synapse.xml. Otherwise we
won't be able to properly serialize it.

Asiri, as I mentioned earlier, I think we should be preserving XML
comments where ever they appear... yes it is hard, but should be able to
do it.

Thanks,

Re: [Carbon-dev] Adding a comment tag to synapse configuration

2010-06-16 Thread Ruwan Linton
I don't think we need a special comments tag, rather we should be able
to preserve generic XML comments, it is going to be hard but not impossible.

New comment tag means more trouble for the user, lets stick to the XML
comments.

This tag will be available for each mediator definition, end point
definition or ? what would be the general rule?

I'm just asking because we're developing the eclipse editor which is
supposed to generate synapse configuration files.

+1 for the idea.

Thanks.

Re: [Carbon-dev] Adding a comment tag to synapse configuration

2010-06-16 Thread Paul Fremantle
I just had someone comment on this: when looking at the sequence flow there
is no idea what each step is for. For instance if there is an XSLT, the only
way of understand what the transformation is doing is to go into the
specifics of the XSLT mediator and then maybe even into the actual XSLT
file.

So +1 for giving mediators names and comments.
