[cayugabirds-l] new birds on Wednesday

2011-04-28 Thread John and Sue Gregoire
We had our first Rose-breasted grosbeak on the feeder Wed. morning. To make it
even
better, he was wearing a band. Site fidelity is an amazing thing especially
when one
considers the distance between the Grosbeak wintering grounds and here!

The second newcomer was a Baltimore Oriole. We feed suet in inverted feeders and
were quite surprised to see the oriole hanging upside down and enjoying suet.
That's
something we had never seen.

With everything coming so quickly I wonder if any of the normal phenology cues
are
holding. e.g., we usually get the first hummingbird when the Quince blossoms.
Think
it time to get those feeders out although the blossom buds are just beginning to
swell.

2011-04-28 Thread Marla Coppolino
Yesterday before dusk and before the storms rolled through, a male
ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK visited my feeder (first time I've seen it here).

Also over the past week, WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS,
CHIPPING SPARROWS, PURPLE FINCHES, YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS, in addition to
the regulars, have visited my feeders.

[cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods, Th 4/28 (quieter)

2011-04-28 Thread Mark Chao
Sapsucker Woods seems to have quieted down overnight. Birding largely with
Bob McGuire and Paul Anderson, I found very few passage migrants (continuing
Yellow-rumped Warblers, a NASHVILLE WARBLER, and some Blue-headed Vireos),
and nothing rare, new, or unusually early. Early-arriving Ovenbirds, Great
Crested Flycatchers, and Wood Thrushes seem to be establishing breeding
territories in the woods. Maybe the least expected bird was a
GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET on the trail spur connecting the visitor parking lot
with the Dryden power line.

Yesterday afternoon I saw a MERLIN flying southwest against the wind over
Simsbury Drive in northeast Ithaca. This bird's trajectory was taking it
straight to Cayuga Heights, where this species has bred in recent years. I
also saw a COMMON LOON flying high toward the lake.

[cayugabirds-l] Dryden waterfowl - Surf Scoter

2011-04-28 Thread Jay McGowan
Hi all,
I had an errand in Dryden this morning, so I stopped at some of the usual
spots. Dryden Lake was fairly empty but with a couple interesting birds,
including 2 RUDDY DUCKS, 2 HORNED GREBES, 1 LESSER SCAUP, and 1 RED-BREASTED
MERGANSER. A MAGNOLIA WARBLER was singing from the spruces at the entrance.

George Road also had a few interesting waterfowl, including 1 RUDDY DUCK, 8
BUFFLEHEAD, 45 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 1 male BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 1 male NORTHERN
SHOVELER, 26 Green-winged Teal, and a female-type SURF SCOTER (the first I
have ever seen at this location!) I was unable to find any shorebirds here,
although both species of yellowlegs were present earlier in the week.

Also, the Western WILLET was still present at Myers Point when I left at
9:20. Lots of BONAPARTE'S GULLS (mostly immature and basic-plumage birds)
and at least three COMMON TERNS were also around.

Good birding,

I went to Goetchius at 9:30 and took some hurried shots in bad light, compared

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Goetchius Wetland- Common Loon --looks like same loon as two weeks ago

2011-04-28 Thread David McCartt
I did not see the loon of two weeks ago so I can't speak to any comparisons
with today's bird.  However, I too find it hard to believe two loons would make
the same mistake.  I'm still wondering just what kind of mistake was made.  It
seems unlikely any loon would try to land or take off from this small area of
water.  More likely a loon would land on the other side of the road where there
is much more open water.  I wonder, like someone mentioned two weeks ago, if
the original loon was sucked through the culvert pipe, depositing the bird on
the east side of the road.  If the pipe diameter is even large enough to pass a
loon this might explain the wing injury.  If today's bird is a different loon
the same scenario could explain it's predicament.  There is a significant
whirlpool above the culvert on the west side of the road and I saw no sign this
morning that the road was flooded last night, giving a bird the chance to just
swim across the road.

Anyway, just some thoughts...

I wasn't able to observe it for more than 5 minutes, but maybe someone else
might have time in the next day or two to watch it for a bit to see if it
extends its wings (of course absence of impairment would not mean it's not the
original bird, which may have recovered).
Like Kevin, I have a hard time believing another common loon made the same
error.
It is in the small patch of water on the east side of the road, near the
southern tip of the preserve, which is where the other one was found, and last
seen. There doesn't seem to be enough room there for a loon to take off.

Can anyone tell if this bird is suffering the same impairment of its wing as
the original Loon. That may make this call a little easier.

Also, for people who have observed this present Loon and the environs, is there
a greater expanse of water that will allow the bird to take off this time, if
it is not the injured one?

Thanks.

[cayugabirds-l] Odds against two loons

2011-04-28 Thread confer
Hi Folks,

What a loony idea. (Just joking)

The culvert in question is on my commute path and in the last 35 years I
have passed this area 300 days of the year x 2 for round trips x 35 years.
Nearly 100% of the time, I look for birds when crossing the culvert, although I
look at the upstream pond more than running stream on the down hill side of the
culvert. Even so, I have looked at the downstream side thousands of times and
even pulled over and stopped to look both ways on hundreds of times. Seeing any
loon in the stream is unlikely and is a once in many thosands event. Seeing two
different loons in two weeks, when none had ever been seen before, is possible
but really unlikely. Still, I wouldn't throw out the possibility. About 15
years ago the DEC, Karen, and Sandy Padulka rescued three loons from less than
a mile away in an even smaller pool in a stream following an ice storm that
made all the fields look like water. Wierd things happen, but not very often.

Cheers,
John

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Goetchius Wetland- Common Loon --looks like same loon as two weeks ago

2011-04-28 Thread Kevin J. McGowan
Beautiful shots, thanks for putting them up. As I suspected, it is hard to
tell what is what with the throat lines. When birds move their feathers don't
move the way it seems they should, and their appearance can change markedly.

It could just be the result of further molt, but the 15 April bird is missing
some white feathers on the back that are there on the 28th. You can see that
it has dark "blanks" in the rows of white squares, on both sides. The 28 April
bird does not.

Honestly, I find it hard to believe there would be 2 loons making the same
mistake, but who knows.

I drove by Goetchius this morning just before 8am and found a COMMON LOON in
the same spot as the the one from a week and a half ago. I only spent a few
seconds watching it but it looked healthy.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Goetchius Wetland- Common Loon --looks like same loon as two weeks ago

2011-04-28 Thread Linda Orkin
Can anyone tell if this bird is suffering the same impairment of its wing as
the original Loon. That may make this call a little easier.

Also, for people who have observed this present Loon and the environs, is
there a greater expanse of water that will allow the bird to take off this
time, if it is not the injured one?

Thanks.

Linda

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Goetchius Wetland- Common Loon --looks like same loon as two weeks ago

2011-04-28 Thread Melissa Groo

I wasn't able to observe it for more than 5 minutes, but maybe someone else
might have time in the next day or two to watch it for a bit to see if it
extends its wings (of course absence of impairment would not mean it's not the
original bird, which may have recovered).
Like Kevin, I have a hard time believing another common loon made the same
error.
It is in the small patch of water on the east side of the road, near the
southern tip of the preserve, which is where the other one was found, and last
seen. There doesn't seem to be enough room there for a loon to take off.
